If it's a swingaxle Bug, they make a kit with a retrofit boot. You cut the old boot off and bolt the new one together around the axle. An IRS Bug requires a pair of circlip pliers and a CV bolt socket. Take the axle out of the car and remove the circlips from the axle. Knock the axle out of the CVs with a big hammer and a drift punch. Throw the old boots away. Clean and repack the CVs, put the boots on the axle, then the CVs on the axle, then the axle back in the car.

Pop the plastic covers off around the steering. you will see a contact that is making the noise, add some grease to the contact. I think it's for power to the horn.

I had an 03 Civic si that would give a cv joint-like noise in a left turn. It sounded like it was coming from the right side. I had it under warranty with CARMAX. To throw the mechanics off the right CV boot was torn so they replaced the axle. The noise was still there! They sent the car to a transmission specialist then to a noise specialist (I had a loner car for a month.) They finally traced the noise to a bad motor mount. I can't remember which one and the car has since been totaled. I bought an 03 SI just like it and guess what - same noise. Since this one's not under warranty I may just leave it for a while. Maybe I can find the specialist who worked on my first si and get back to you.

It is more cost effective to replace the CV axle which has the new joints installed. Using the 36 mm socket, remove the center axle nut. Remove the though-bolt on the bottom of the strut where it attaches to the spindle. Using the pry bar, pry the lower control arm down to pull the separated ball joint out of the spindle and push the spindle out of the way toward the rear of the car. Step 3 Use the pry bar to pry the CV axle out of the transaxle. Put the pry bar between the transaxle case and the CV axle, and push it out. Remove the CV axle and put it in the box the new axle came in---CV axles carry a core fee, which is refundable upon return of the old axle. Step 4 Install the new CV axle by inserting it into the transaxle up to the snap ring clip where it will stop. With both hands, pull it back about an inch and slam it in with a fast push, and you will feel it snap into the locked position. Step 5 Grab the brake rotor, pull it outward and insert the outer end of the CV axle into the hub in the rotor. Rotate the rotor back and forth to line up the splines and push the axle in as far as possible. Loosely screw on the axle nut. Step 6 Pull the lower control arm down with the pry bar. Line the ball joint up with the hole in the spindle and insert the ball joint. Install the nut on top of the ball joint and tighten it down. Step 7 Install the bolt in the bottom of the strut where it attaches to the spindle and tighten. Torque the axle nut to 180 foot pounds. Put the wheel on and repeat from Step 1 for the other side.

Did you check your tires? If the steering wheel is rocking back and forth you could have a bubble in the tire

more common is when a steel belt on one of the front tires has broken that then makes a little bump on the servace of the tire. run you hand over the surface of the tire and you will find a bump. that will be the bad tire. General Tire is known for that problem form what Ive seen. it could also be a loose balljoint, this could be very dangerous depending on how bad it is, you can lose a wheel causing you to lose control of your vehicle. Or it could just need a wheel alinement or a wheel balance.
