How does the counterculture movement of the 1960s still influence society today Or does it?
Counterculture is still around today although it is less drastic. There is still a drug problem today that was started in the counterculture movement of the 1960's.
In a broader sense counter culture was in opposition to many of the conservative trends of the 1950's it was also led by a philosophical and intellectual impetus that is seemingly lacking in the fashion/media/societal hijacking of the intent and meaning behind counterculture we find today.
The idea of rebellion has become diluted into expressing fashion trends: tattoos, body piercing, emo-style pop/rock and being 'different' without knowing why they want to be different.
Society has moved back to the "rebel without a cause" mentality. Reject for the sake of rejection and assimilate with a group that has the pretense of novelty, change and rejection of social mores. All the while marketers target these trends the same way they do hip/hop or other cultural trends that make consumers of rebellion buy Che Guevara tshirts and wear kefiyahs.
