Fuel and Engines

We commonly relate fuel and engines with gasoline. Other engines also run on natural gas such as propane and “bio-fuels” such as ethanol. The principle remains the same as the fuel induces internal combustion.

What should you do when a compression test reveals that compression is below average?

If the difference between the high and low reading is within 10%, it is withing normal specification. If more than 10%, try squirting oil into the low cylinder and retest, if compression comes up , this indicates a bad ring, if not indicates problem is a bad valve.

What if gasoline is used in a diesel engine?

Bad Things Will happenEither something expensive or something very expensive is going to happen. Since gasoline is designed to be resistant to self-ignition, gasoline in a diesel engine either won't ignite or will ignite at the wrong time. Some diesel engines run leaner than gasoline engines (meaning that the air-fuel mix has a higher proportion of air than a gasoline engine). That increases the chances that the gasoline won't ignite and that unburnt fuel will be sent into the hot exhaust system--where, ironically, it could ignite, leading to possible exhaust damage. Even if you avoid that disaster, you can expect to pay $500 to drain the fuel tank, clean out the fuel lines, and refill the tank with diesel. Some types of diesel engine use the diesel fuel as a lubricant for the fuel pump (remember, it's a fuel oil). Running gasoline through such a pump could lead to serious damage or failure, leading to a very expensive repair.

Hi,your diesel engine will go really quick for a little bit.

NOTHING MUCH WILL HAPPEN, the engine will not run or run so badly that you will have to investigate. drain out as much of the incorrect fuel as you can and refill with the correct fuel. If it is a diesel engine, use the primer pump to extract as much gas as possible. You can then top up with the correct fuel with as much as about a 5% mix, starting will take a little time but take it easy, once the engine is running smoothly again you can apply power, but take it easy for the first few miles. IGNORE THE NAYSAYERS, NO DAMAGE WILL BE DONE OVER A SHORT PERIOD. I HAVE DONE THIS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS - THOSE THAT SAY OTHERWISE ARE JUST TRYING TO FRIGHTEN YOUR MONEY OFF YOU - I HAVE HEARD THIS COSTING PEOPLE THOUSANDS - ALL UNNECESSARY!

What if a car has NEVER had an oil change?

Then that car has a neglected engine that will not last very long and I would not want that vehicle at any price.

What is the problem when no fuel is going into the carb from the injector but the fuel pump is pumping the fuel to the injector sometimes it will and sometimes not work..Is it the injector or a sensor?

hmm hard to answer this one, need more information. car either has a carburettor, a fuel injected throttle body, fuel injection. or electronic fuel injection.these systems are all different so it does make a difference on the answer. so we need to know which system your car has. is a 1994 Astro Van

What Is the fuel mileage for a 5.7 l hemi?

12 mpg city 17mpg hwy you can average 15-16 if it is running perfectly, with a very lite foot. With a heavy foot, trailer towing, or excessive idle time expect 8-10mpg

Can the timing chain on a 92 Olds Cutlass Ciera cause knocking noise at idle that disappears when rpm is increased as with serpentine belt off there is no knocking?

I am now able to answer my own question. Turns out that the timing chain was not the problem causing the loud knocking noise. I found a sharp mechanic and garage that I could trust. He was as puzzled as I was initially. But, it didn't take him long to diagnose the problem as a harmonic balancer. The rubber coupling in the harmonic balancer had deteriorated and created the knocking noise which was loudest when the belt was on with engine idling.

Apparently with the belt on, the load on the crank and balancer (PS pump, alternator, water pump, AC compressor, etc.) was just enough to cause the metal parts of the balancer to vibrate and knock together. With the belt off and the engine running, the noise almost disappeared. It really had us scratching our heads. We had initially both thought that it would probably be an internal engine problem. The engine has 140,000 miles and even though it has been well maintained, I knew it would not be worth rebuilding. So, I was very happy that it was just the harmonic balancer. That only cost me $330 total. That was much cheaper than buying another car which I can't afford. The removal of the part required special tools that they had. Even so, they still had some difficulty. I have some mechanical experience working on various cars and am basically fearless. However,I recommend this type of repair is best left to a skilled mechanic who has the proper tools and has done this before. This is not a good DIY project to learn on.

What is the net horsepower rating of a 1972 351 Cleveland engine?

266 is the Net Horsepower Rating of the 'M' or 'Q' code 1972 351 Cleveland engine. The 'R' code engine was rated at 275 net HP in 1972.

Why car starts stalling in near empty gas tank Around 15-20 of gas remaining in tank?

Any car will stall going around corners with only about 1 gallon of gas left in the tank (15-20 miles). A car should never be driven that low anyway as most modern cars have in the gas tank electric fuel pumps. The gas is actually used as a coolant for the fuel pump and if the car is driven too often down to the dregs of the fuel tank the fuel pump will prematurely fail due to overheating. It's a bear to replace the in tank fuel pumps on most cars. Also, it's not good for your gas mileage either to run the tank dry on a regular basis. Most fuel gauges are not all that accurate so when the gas gauge comes just to the "E" there should be about 2-3 gallons of gas left and you shouldn't push it beyond that. You should actually not drive past a quarter tank if at all possible. If you want to get a rough idea of how your fuel gauge is calibrated on a new or new to you car, fill the car completely up with gas. If the gauge reads much over the "F" (such as up to a quarter space on the gauge if it were marked past "F") you will most likely run out of gas right when the gauge hits "E". If the tank is completely full and stops at "F" without going past, you will usually have a small buffer at "E" before you completely run out of gas.

What can happen if you inhale fumes from engine block cleaner?

Chemical fumes are lung irritants. If the person moves to clean air quickly, the risk is minimal unless the person has an acute or chronic lung illness. If the person experiences shortness of breath, they should be checked by a physician.

How do you remove a harmonic balancer?

Depends on the engine make, but you almost always need a large 3-jaw gear puller. Look at your engine manual for specific instructions.

What is CC engine?

CC is the cubic centimeter capacity of an engine

cc is the distance between the top dead center ie) piston end in top most and the bottom dead center ie) piston at the bottom most. It is simply called as how much volume occupied by the piston which one stroke

It is the cubic centimeter measurement of engine displacement.

Is leaving your engine running good for it?

He is right! Running a warm engine under load uses far less fuel and causes far less wear than running a cold engine under load.

This is why fire engines and other emergency vehicles often use engine preheater systems that keep the engine coolant at operating temperature (or close to it).

Also, you will use far less fuel in your first few miles of driving. That will more than make up for the fuel used warming up the engine (provided you aren't warming the engine for hours!).

As the earlier poster explained, warming up your engine means you'll use less fuel in total. That means less pollution, not more.

Engine oil works best when warm up to operating temperature. Also a cool down period is also recommended. If you just got off the freeway, drive around slowly for about 10 minutes to bring engine temperature down. This even more critical you have (or have added) a turbocharger. The shaft bearing on the turbo mostly uses engine oil to survive the brtual exhaust temperatures during boost. If the engine is prematurely shutdown while the turbo housing is still hot, the oil can coke in the shaft bearings. This is why performance auto stores sell turbo timers. A turbo timer lets you remove you remove your key from the ignition and the engine will continue to run for a few minutes, so the oil pump can do its work to cool the turbocharger.

What processes convert electricity into a commercial grade jet fuel while sequestering atmospheric pollutant carbon at the same time?

This is impossible. Electricity is the result of electrons flowing through a conductor while jet fuel is a refined liquid byproduct of oil. As for "pollutant carbon" plants would disagree.

How do you flush a 2000 Neon engine?

Buy one of the "flush in a can" products and follow the directions exactly.

if you want to do a machine flush your dodge dealer should be able to help you out. it wont be cheap, expect to pay between $100 and $150 for the flush and an oil change.

Hearing a loud whistling noise at the rear near the gas tank any ideas?

Sounds like the electronic fuel pump which is located inside the gas tank. also make sure you service the fuel filter the helps prolong the life of the pump. You've probably got a fuel pump going out. Mine lasted about a year from the time I noticed it.

Is there another size engine that will fit in an 1984 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme besides 307t v8 to give it more power. if no how can i get more power?

Need more info307 motor????? Chevy made 307 till 1973 you might be talking about a 305Need more info. What state? Ca. has smog laws. You need to check what motors were avail. for 1984 in the olds line up. If smog laws don't hold you back, Any small block Chevy motor will work (302 305 327 350 383 400 377 ) as long as you use a Chevy transmission. 1984 was computer year so you would have to remove or by pass set up. If you want to stay with what you have change cam and add computer chip. Hyper tech might have one for that year and make.

What is the horsepower of a 1970 327 and 1970 350?

The Corvette wasn't made with a 327ci V8 in 1970. A 1970 Corvette with the 350ci ZQ4 V8 puts out 300hp and with the 350ci LT1 V8 puts out 370hp (these are gross horse power figures).
