Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

What is silence?

Sometimes speakers fall silent when they hesitate in searching for a word, or interrupt themselves before correcting themselves. Discourse analysis shows that people use brief silences to mark the boundaries of prosodic units, in turn-taking, or as reactive tokens, e.g., as a sign of displeasure, disagreement, embarrassment, desire to think, confusion, and the like. Relatively prolonged intervals of silence can be used in rituals; in some religious disciplines, people maintain silence for protracted periods, or even for the rest of their lives, as an ascetic means of spiritual transformation.

What is the correct way to install a new headliner in a 1974 VW Beetle 111?

Busbones.com has a partial how to do vw headliner install. Last 2 parts unavailable but lots of info. First you have to buy a good quality headliner. A few common handtools will come in handy. at this point you should also order new rubber seals for the front, rear and both quarter windows. The windows have to be removed in order to replace the headliner. The primary tool used will be a short blade putty knife (I used a bench grinder to dull the blade on mine so it would not cut the headliner fabric) which is used to tuck the fabric into the tabs that hold it in. There are steel rods called bows that fit through sleeves sewn into the headliner, these fit into tracks on the sides of the car's roof. The bows create the domed look of the headliner. You can start from the front or the back using clothes pins to hold the headliner in place so you can get things organized. You will have to pull the headliner tight and even so you do not have wrinckles. I used regular contact cement on my headliner and it worked great but you can use other types of adhesive if you want. After getting the headliner stretched front to rear you start on the sides. It is just about impossible to explain how to attache the sides, the best thing to do is to remove a headliner and pay attention to how it was installed. When you start take your time, getting in a hurry will only cause you to lower your quality standards and you will regret it later.

Why does check engine light on 1994 Chevrolet Corsica 3.1 L come on after 10 minutes of highway driving?

Hey Clifton==Takeit to Auto zone and have the codes read free. GoodluckJoe I have had mine tested and there is an error in the computer that gives false readings such as check engine, hot engine, etc. There is a computer chip that needs replacing, but I am told that the exact same number must be on the replacement computer chip. When each system is tested through the computer individually, it will test as ok, or in fine operation, yet the lights will continue to display randomly. This error could not be reset, only a replacement of the computer chip is what my mechanic told me to solve the problem. Until replacement, you will have to watch the fluids, temp, etc. manually (old fashioned way of checking the dipsticks & fluid levels) until this chip is repaired.

How to backfire a car?

In the old days of carberated engines, it coud happen through the carberator, with the timing being off just enough to allow by pass from the valves back through the carberator. Through the tail pipe, gas fumes build up in the exhaust system and are ignighted. Either way it indicated an undesireable out of tune engine.

What causes the water not to come out to wash the windshield?

i had the same prob i found when i closed the bonnet the soft water pipe bent and got traped under the bonnet hinge just tied it back cured??? It doesn't come out at all? If so, could be a bad pump, maybe some tubing came undone under the hood even, pop the bonnet open and check it out. If you aren't mechanic-inclined, then perhaps take it to a real shop and have them take a look. It may be something as simple as, no fluid in the reservoir (if so? Fill it up), or a loose/cracked/broken hose/tubing.

Why does your Toyota MR2 burn white smoke?

How do you remove muffler on John Deere stx38?

I'm having the same issue. I'm trying to replace my front axle and I need to remove the muffler to get to the axle bolt. Please help.

I recently replaced the front axle on my STX38 so I took off the muffler as well. The muffler's heat shield needs to come off first, I think there's just two bolts holding that in place on the front of it. If I remember correctly, there were 4 bolts total securing the muffler. There are two bolts towards the front of the muffler that connect vertically to the body of the mower, these need to be removed. If you look at the very top of the muffler where it connects to the engine you'll see another two bolts that need to be removed. I had a tough time getting these two completely out since mine were a bit rusted but they did eventually come off. Once all these bolts are removed, I had to wiggle the muffler out of the bottom of the mower. For the people doing front axle replacement - once the muffler is removed you should have access to the bolt securing the axle.

Why does white smoke come out of the exhaust system when you first start the car up?

Can tip on end exhaust tailpipe clog?

Typically, no, it cannot. If you have a clog in your exhaust 9 times out of 10 it is in the catalytic converter. The muffler can also collapse inside and cause clogs.

Will block sealer stop exhaust from entering coolant system?

It can if you use it properly. The cooling system pressure is not as great as engine compression, however a blown gasket is usually a two way street. When your cooling system is hot there is pressure back to the cylinder and the coolant can move back and forth between compression strokes of the engine. Ok everytime the sealer enters the breach it is blown back out,but it builds a layer each time because there is a hot spot where the leak is. That is why it can work. I would buy a sealer that is compatable with antifreeze such as k-seal, or k&w fiberlock. If you know what caused the head gasket failure, fix that first and foremost or your efforts will be in vain. It is also worth noting that if the compression is too great and is not allowing sealer to work, you can remove one spark plug at a time until you find no bubbles in coolant. If you do this it will only allow the sealer to penetrate without pressure from the cylinder. It will run rough, but should do the trick. Unplug the fuel injector to each one you test. Put electrical tape over end of plug wire to prevent arcing.

What could white smoke coming from the exhaust manifold mean?

Couple things. 1- worn valve seals letting oil in the combustion chamber. 2- worn piston rings -same result. You probably have a cracked head on the exhaust port.

What would cause a strong fuel smell from the exhaust pipe?

Be sure there isn't a fuel leak that you may be mistaken for it coming out the exhaust pipe. Is it there when the car is off? IF it is still there, It may burning exceptionally rich (which I doubt), or there may be a misfire and the fuel in a couple cylinders are not burning at all.
