Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

White sludge in oil cap?

The most likely cause is condensation buildup in the oil - apparently normal with a number of Dodge engines and harmless(assuming no blown head gasket - you would know if that was the case with dropping anti-freeze levels).

If you are loosing coolant with no apparent leak, or see white smoke from the exhaust you may have a blown head gasket. You need to have this looked into by a progressional. A blown head gasket will destroy your engine.

Will running strait pipe to muffler on 1994 Geo Metro hurt engine?

I replaced the cracked/rusted cat conv on my 94 geo metro and ran a straight pipe to the previously installed new muffler (rear half of car).

*Then the exhaust noise was very loud and started to make a raspy metal sound at certain rpm's (like when accelerating). It seemed like the car 'lost' some power at higher speeds 100km (65MPH) and struggled up hills.

*The muffler shop said I just had a cheap muffler and these small engines designed to have multiple resonator chambers (cat conv and muffler). So I bought a universal cat conv and had it installed. The exhaust noise is now whisper quite from front of engine to behind rear seat, then can hear the raspy louder sound (like the cheap want-to-be hot rod sound on cars)

* I'm wondering if it's possible to 'blow' a muffler by using straight pipe (without extra back pressure?) of cat conv ?

Your 1992 GEO Metro LSI will smoke for about 30 secondes at speeds above 50 mph then quits what causes that?

The smoke is because the oil is coming through air cleaner and pcv valve out of valve cover at freeway speeds blow by pushes oil through vent tube into air cleaner and PVC they are on the same line have not figured out why yet I think its a bad breather design take air cleaner off and you will oil in there

What would cause an exhaust smell to appear in cabin?

Exhaust leak? Bad air pump?

It's not going to be an air pump. It's either an exhaust leak or a body hole. Look for wet or moldy spots in the carpeting or the trunk. It the exhaust loud? Common exhaust leaks are manifold-to-cat gaskets (donuts) and the top of the muffler. On my 1987 Taurus I had an exhaust pipe heat shield fall off - unfortunately my engine had a small oil leak that dripped right onto that pipe! Talk about stench... The odor was being pulled into the air intake for the heater.

Resolution: sold the car at 193,000 miles and bought a 1991 version

Why does your 1987 Toyota Tercel blow heavy blue smoke out of the exhaust and oil through the PCV and breather hose?

Blue smoke out tailpipe is common for oil getting in combustion chamber. It means you can have bad valve seals, easy to fix, or oil is slipping past rings, much more extensive and expensive.

How do you install a Muffler that is rusted?

The better question is why would you install a muffler that is rusted? In my experience exhaust installation is a job that I don't want to repeat often, and once a muffler has started to rust it will go quickly! If it is only a little surface rust, then take a wire brush to it and it should be fine. Your bigger concern will be getting a pipe clamp to go on or getting the pipe to go in or over the inlet and outlet as they are usually misshapen by the original pipe clamp. My recommendation would be to get a new muffler, they are less expensive than you might think! You can go on www.partsamerica.com and check out prices before you go to the store. You can buy the parts there, I do sometimes and you can get free shipping, usually I buy at my local store, but I always use it when trying to determine how much a part will cost and they provide pricing for high end to low end you you can make and informed decision. Good Luck

Why is there white smoke coming from my valve cover and truck not starting?

I have a 1990 Toyota Pickup that has had recent overheating problems. The thermostat is fine, there is a possible water pump leak, but I think the head gasket might be blown because there was a milky fluid when I drained my radiator. Because I thought the gasket was blown I put everything back together, so I could take it to a shop and get a compression check, and tried to start the truck, to make sure I put it back together correctly, and now it wont start and there's white smoke pouring out of the valve cover. There is oil in the truck and I filled the radiator with water. Can this be caused by a blown head gasket or is the engine gone. Thanks.

Yes, it would appear you have a blown head gasket. You will have to tow the truck to a shop for diagnosis and repair. Do not try to start it again or you can do serious damage to the engine.

Have you ever heard of putting denatured alcohol in with fuel of car?

It has to be the right kind. Rubbing alcohol doesn't do anything. Pure alcohol can absorb like one fourth it's volume of water. That is basicly what the product Heat is. It get the water out of the tank and allows it to be burned with the gas. Rubbing Alcohol already has water in it and can't absorb any more.

What is a exhaust flex pipe?

An exhaust flex pipe is a braided stainless steel pipe that allows for some movement between exhaust pipes (usually around 6-8" long).

It is made of interwoven wires of stainless steel.

A flex pipe will need to be replaced within the life of a vehicle and a tell tale sign of expiration is when wires are sticking out or loud exhaust can be heard from that area.

What causes the check engine light on a Jaguar to come on?

If you find out let me know, cause mine has been on for about 25,000 miles now.

it doesn't seem to affect how the car runs, though. . .

Why is White smoke coming out of my 1996 Saturn SC2 and how can i fix it?

Sounds like a blown head gasket. Stop driving this car immediately and have it towed to the shop. If I'm correct, continued driving will cause major engine damage. Hopefully this has not already happened. It may be something huge like the answer before mine, but if everything else is running fine, you may have a leak or oil or water is landing on a hot part of your engine and it's burning off.
Did you just have your oil changed recently? They might have spilled some so it might just be burning off.

Can having an old engine cause a bad smell coming out of the exhaust?

Having a dead skunk in the exhaust might be your problem. It's serious, I get it a lot in my Camaro.

if it smells like rotten eggs its a bad catalytic converter....chances are its this much more likely than a dead skunk.

Why does a lot of white smoke emit at idle after a hard revving the engine?

You may have a blown head gasket. The white smoke may actually be steam from coolant leaking into the combustion chambers. If your car is using a lot of water, this would back up the blown head gasket theory.

White smoke is coolant and black smoke is oil. I agree that this is likely a problem with your head gasket.

Gas smell from exhaust looking like gas dripping from exhaust pipe?

i really dont think gas is dripping out of the sxhasut pipe..it just impossible as the gas in pulverized inside the combustion chaber..:))) that s jsut water--condensation? try to light it up you ll see it wont burn.

if your exahust is smelling like unburnt gasoline...you must be running rich. check you O2 sensor..and check for a stuck MAF

Why is an exhaust system made of stainless steel?

Stainless steel exhausts are expensive but last a long time; they do not rust away like regular steel exhausts. Stainless steel exhausts are populat on custom, prestige and kit cars. A good staimless exhaust will last the lifetime of a car and never need replacing. It will, however discolour form the heat!

Why there are two exhaust tail pipes on some cars?

Old school we used dual pipes on for each side of the v-motors... now manufactures put dual tail pipes to control back pressure of the higher output smaller motors ... oh and dont forget the converters ...

What is the total amount of platinum in a typical catalytic converter?

I found a site claiming that a catalytic converter can carry b/t 3-7 ounces of platinum per converter. According to this site(wired.com), platinum is going at a rate of 2075 dollars per oz. This means you would at least have 6225 and up to 14 and a half thousand dollars if you could harvest the platinum purely. The next question is how do you get the platinum in a catalytic converter out of it to get this reward. Stolen catty's go for 200, but I'd rather not go that route. The site also mentione other metals involved in the production of converters such as rhodium and palladium are going for 445 and 7300 an ounce. I might have to recant on that whole not theiving idea.

There are usually about 3 grams of platinum in a catalytic converter. There are 31.1 grams in an ounce. Platinum is at $2000/ounce so you can figure right at $200 worth. Please note manufacturers are starting to use other materials so you may have very little, if any, platinum.

There are 28 grams per ounce not 31.1.

CORRECTIONS TO YOUR ANSWER

In every Kg of honetcomb which is the filter you find on average 1.5g of platinum (Pt), 0.5g of palladium (Pd) and 0.1 rhodium (Rh). Some catalytic converters have a heavy honeycomb while others are light depends on the engine size, if the engine is big car companies tend to use a bigger honeycomb. Regarding the ounce the internation ounce weight is 31.1g but the US ounce weight is 28g.

***CORRECTIONS TO YOUR ANSWER****

There are in fact 31.1 grams to a TROY OUNCE, which is the measurement used for precious metals. There are usually between 3 to 7 grams per catalytic converter, which is coated on a honeycomb ceramic substrate. There can be up to 15 grams of platinum in large truck catalytic converters.

*Clarification*

There are two types of converters, ones with the honycomb structures, and ones with platinum-coated pellets. The pellets are easy to harvest, but if you're going to havest them, make sure they're your own!
