Turbo was shooting the oil out. Instead of buying an expensive new turbo, I bought the rebuild kit for $40, and rebuilt it. For around $500 the problem is solved. No more smoke , and much better performance. If you have a car with turbo, that might be your problem.

Actually, you don't want t loosen them. The noise is because the serpentine belt is slipping. When the vehicle first starts, the alternator works a little extra hard to put electrical energy back into the battery for use next time you need to start the engine. That extra electrical energy requires that the belt deliver more power to the alternator and if things aren't working right the belt will make that sound as it slips. Examine the belt. Are there cracks, missing sections of the ribs? Do you see signs of wear? If so, replace the serpentine belt. If that doesn't solve the problem, you probably have a weak belt tensioner.

General Motors make a performance stainless steel cat back exhaust system for the Pontiac GTP (1997-2002). It has 2.5 inch diameter pipes and 4 inch diameter stainless steel exhaust tips. You will have to give up the original oval cast aluminum tips for this package. The system provides higher flow and a nice "throaty" sound. The part number for the package is 12498617. At the end of the day, you have to make a compromise between a performance and sound. This system creates a nice balance, but it is louder than stock.

Try replacing the fuel pressure regulator. It is located under the doghouse near the air filter pan. Unless you have small limber hands you will need to move the air filter pan to the left as you ar facing it, to access the 3 (three Allen screws which secure the regulator. Move that pan or you will experience plenty frustration.

try hotter burning spark plugs. and you should try a higher grade of gasoline it may cost a little more per mile but it helps the engine run clean. there for your miles per gallon will improve. plus try cleaning your air filter and running some fuel system cleaner through it to to clean the carb. and what not.
Banks now makes a great exhaust system for your yj, but it can be pricey. also the split pipe 50 series flowmaster. as for air filters K&N is always a good way to go

Get a code scanner for that vehicle and read the code. There is no way to figure out what's wrong without that information. It could be a MAP sensor, oxygen sensor, or any number of things that won't stop the engine but can make it run less efficiently. The computer will tell you what's wrong.

First off I'm assuming you have the 3.8 litre V6. I have a 93 model Cougar and I'm assuming they didn't change that much. Your exhaust setup should have *2* mufflers alltogether. My best guess says that the manual means to remove the pipe from the muffler that's about in the middle of the underbody. There should be a muffler clamp right at the back of this muffler. shorter pipes mean less cost to manuf. = mo profit. And it looks sporty. My truck's tailpipe is bent 90 degrees with the tip extending another 12-14 inches out behind the right rear tire. The pipe would be the perfect length without that last bend and if it exited straight out of the vehicle's rear. Truck tailpipes exit the side because when towing a trailer rear facing pipes can cause exhaust fumes to enter the passenger compartment by hitting the trailer and "backflowing" up the sides of the truck and into the passenger area. Also, rear facing pipes increase the potential for harmful exhaust gases to build up in the trailer, especially bad if you are towing a camper.
