Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

What causes white smoke from exhaust?

Answer:

I have a 2003 Audi A4 1.8 Turbo around 67,000 miles. It started shooting a lot of white smoke in couple of days. I have read the other answers, and I thought it was burning antifreeze. When I took it to the mechanic shop, the first mechanic said the motor was bad. The second mechanic told me it could be related with turbo. He took the turbo out and yes it was the problem. Turbo was shooting the oil out. Instead of buying an expensive new turbo, I bought the rebuild kit for $40, and rebuilt it. For around $500 the problem is solved. No more smoke , and much better performance. If you have a car with turbo, that might be your problem.

What is wrong with a 1992 Mazda Protege LX 5-speed that has high screaching sound with first start and if heater is running Sounds like it is coming form the belts and is there a way to loosen them?

Actually, you don't want t loosen them. The noise is because the serpentine belt is slipping. When the vehicle first starts, the alternator works a little extra hard to put electrical energy back into the battery for use next time you need to start the engine. That extra electrical energy requires that the belt deliver more power to the alternator and if things aren't working right the belt will make that sound as it slips. Examine the belt. Are there cracks, missing sections of the ribs? Do you see signs of wear? If so, replace the serpentine belt. If that doesn't solve the problem, you probably have a weak belt tensioner.

How to stop thick white smoke coming from my tailpipe on a 1999 Chrysler sebring lxi 6 cylinder?

Thick white smoke is an indication of coolant entering the combustion chamber. More than likely you have a blown head gasket, especially if the engine has overheated recently. Stop driving this car as severe engine damage will occur due to coolant in the oil. The heads must be removed and new head gaskets installed. A major repair.

What cause a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra to backfire?

My 1993 Ciera just went through this. Hesitation, sputters, sometimes fine, sometimes horrible, and everything in between. My solution was to replace the fuel pump. The filter was also dirty but did not remedy the problem. AC Delco pump and new filter + labor at a shop = $550. Have someone check the fuel pressure at the block. Price will help you decide if it's worth keeping... Good luck!

What kind of exhaust will give you the most performance but keep the sound to near stock with the same tips on a 1999 grand prix gtp?

General Motors make a performance stainless steel cat back exhaust system for the Pontiac GTP (1997-2002). It has 2.5 inch diameter pipes and 4 inch diameter stainless steel exhaust tips. You will have to give up the original oval cast aluminum tips for this package. The system provides higher flow and a nice "throaty" sound. The part number for the package is 12498617. At the end of the day, you have to make a compromise between a performance and sound. This system creates a nice balance, but it is louder than stock.

What could be the problem if when in 4 wheel drive you hear a repetitive knocking coming from the front end?

Check the U joints on the front driveshaft. Also see if the front differential is in good shape, with no play in the pinion gear input. Beyond that, if you have locking hubs, make sure they're either in or out all the way and the same on both sides.

What could cause smoke coming from the Radiator Fan?

If the smoke is coming from the electric fan itself, then it needs replacing. It could be the smoke is steam that the fan is drawing from the radiator, and you have a coolant leak at the radiator.

Why does your 1986 Ford E-150 van blow black smoke out of the exhaust?

Black smoke is usually an indicator that the engine is getting too much fuel and it is not burning completely, leaving the black smoke. Blue smoke is usually oil.

Try replacing the fuel pressure regulator. It is located under the doghouse near the air filter pan. Unless you have small limber hands you will need to move the air filter pan to the left as you ar facing it, to access the 3 (three Allen screws which secure the regulator. Move that pan or you will experience plenty frustration.

Why did the check engine light come on out of the blue on 2002 Jetta GLS?

Get a code scanner for that vehicle and read the code. There is no way to figure out what's wrong without that information. It could be a MAP sensor, oxygen sensor, or any number of things that won't stop the engine but can make it run less efficiently. The computer will tell you what's wrong.

You just installed a brand new muffler and you still hear a loud exhaust noise and rattly noise Could this be due to having no catalytic converter on a 95 sentra?

The rattle might be a loose heat shield but the loud exhaust can only be a hole somewhere. start at the manifold an work your way back listening and feeling for leaks.

What does it mean when oil spews out of the exhaust pipe?

Serious trouble. It usually means a broken oil (piston) ring. Another possibility is that your exhaust valve seals are bad/gone or valve guide is worn in excess. Another possibility is it is condensation coming out of exhaust mixed with black residue from exhaust and only looks like oil.

If the repair manual very casually says to begin to replace the fuelpump on a 1994 Mercury Cougar by removing the tailpipe from the muffler how do you do this wihout breaking the muffler or tailpipe?

First off I'm assuming you have the 3.8 litre V6. I have a 93 model Cougar and I'm assuming they didn't change that much. Your exhaust setup should have *2* mufflers alltogether. My best guess says that the manual means to remove the pipe from the muffler that's about in the middle of the underbody. There should be a muffler clamp right at the back of this muffler. If it looks anything like mine right now I would suggest getting a new exhaust while ur at it. Good Luck. Spyder

Why do tail pipes on pickup trucks come out to the side and not the rear?

shorter pipes mean less cost to manuf. = mo profit. And it looks sporty. My truck's tailpipe is bent 90 degrees with the tip extending another 12-14 inches out behind the right rear tire. The pipe would be the perfect length without that last bend and if it exited straight out of the vehicle's rear. Truck tailpipes exit the side because when towing a trailer rear facing pipes can cause exhaust fumes to enter the passenger compartment by hitting the trailer and "backflowing" up the sides of the truck and into the passenger area. Also, rear facing pipes increase the potential for harmful exhaust gases to build up in the trailer, especially bad if you are towing a camper.

What is considered loud exhaust in Michigan?

What might cause a Ford 5.4 engine to start whining and lose speed and lock up if the oil light did not come on?

Coolant or gasoline mixed with the oil. The oil light will only come on when the pressure drops. Drain the oil and see if it contains coolant or gasoline. You can smell the gas in the oil. Water will settle to the bottom.
