If I remeber corectly the shifter shaft in the Transmision rotates, not go in and out.
But regardless of that this transmision has a serious internal problem.
It could be as easy as the linkage inside the transmision has fallen apart or the whole inside of the Transmision is ruined.
BUT FIRST: Check the automatic transmision fluid level!

RELIEVE THE FUEL PRESSURE FIRST! I suggest going to Autozone.com and research it, but on my 1990 Stanza it involves pulling the fuse for the fuel pump, then cranking the engine until it dies, then crank it a few seconds to relieve it.
if you don't relieve the pressure, you'll have 40 PSI of gas spraying out of the connection, which could start a fire or blind you. After the fuel pressure is gone, find the filter and remove then replace it with a new one, note the arrows on the filter for IN and OUT. Rplace the fuse, start the engine and look for leaks.

If you go to a national mechanic I.e. sears auto or aamco it could all depend.. you should think about how many miles you have on your car and wonder if you should also change the timing components as this could cause the chain to malfunction as well. I was on ebay a few minutes ago and I saw the complete kit (sprokets, guides, seals, chain) for around 40 bucks.

Hi, I am certainly not an expert but I do have a 87 Maxima ( vg30e engine ) and to gat at that alt. you are best to take off the pass front tire then the plastic shield on the fender and the area opens up to you. Very snug quarters on the Max. don't know for sure about the Stanza. I think they have a 4 cyl.?
If it's cable driven, you probably need to replace the cable. Otherwise, if it's digital impulse driven, it's probably the speedometer itself.

The starter inhibitor relay is located in the relay box just behind the headlight on the driver's side. It is Nissan part 25630-9662 and has six pins. There are two normally closed contacts that turn off cruise control when you start the engine. The other contacts are normally open and close to energize the starter solenoid when you start the engine. Power for the relay coil must pass through the transmission reverse/neutral safety switch when the transmission is in Park or Neutral. This switch is located on the side of the transmission and is reached from underneath on the front, driver's side. (Remove the plastic protective covering from underneath the engine in that area-it has about 10 screws.)
The two bolts you are referrring to are accessed through the oil pan. You will need to remove the oil pan and possibly inner baffling to remove.

Look below the battery, on the left side of it (an inch or 2 lower than the bottom of it), you'll see a small tube with a sharp curve (kinda like the number 7 shape) with a small black ball on the top. That's the handle. Grap it, and maybe twist as you pull up. I wondered for the longest time, until my friend just happened to grab it and was surprised to find it! Trans stick is on the right side of the eng, just aft of the radiator and about 10-12 inches lower than the top of the raditor. The top of the stick is very small and looks like a black marble.
