What is wrong with a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE when the Service Vehicle Soon light comes on for no obvious reason?

For me, It meant that in about 12 seconds my alternator was going to fry. If you find the light turning on agin while driving, DO NOT turn off the vehicle and try to restart it unless you are in a spot where you can leave it parked. This happened to me in a busy intersection. The car would not turn over, therefore the steering wheel was locked and I could not put the tranny into neutral to push it off of the road. I ended up with a $45 towing bill for a service station on the far end of the intersection. I would have it checked out soon. ?
I haven't taken my car in to get checked out yet (aside from asking a few people at AutoZone) and the car continues to work fairly fine. Had a few battery problems, as it went dead quite a few times mysteriously, but other than that, the light has continuously been on since I posted and nothing too major has happened......... yet. ?
It could also be an issue with the Daytime Running Lights malfunctioning, or the Automatic Light Control. ?
The service vehicle/check engine light frequently has to do with emissions.
I have a 97 Grand Am, and the light comes on occasionally for no reason. I have figured out that the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced. It's not urgent, and if you drive for a couple hundred miles, the light will go off. However, a bad oxygen sensor means you might be getting a poor mixture of air/gas, resulting in poorer mpg and higher emissions.
I would still have yours checked out asap, as it could be something else, but if they tell you its the oxygen sensor, and they offer to replace it, I would say no and do it yourself, to save some money. ?
Tighten the fuel cap. ?
Experienced this problem with my 2001 Grand Am - took it to the dealership and they basically told me that they "burped" it. I had put gas into the vehicle without cutting the engine and it somehow gave it a "gas" bubble. Mechanic at the shop told me I could have done it myself by removing the gas cap, propping open the little flap that closes off the gas tank and rocking the car manually. ?
Because of an annoying "Service Engine" indicator on my 1998 Grand Am GT, I went on eBay and found a good, inexpensive OBD2 (On-Board Diagnostics) reader made by UIO Tech for about $35. It works great, and comes with a list of trouble code definitions. Also shuts off indicator. In my case, the Service Engine light was still on after I replaced an arcing coil pack cover.

How many miles to the gallon does a Pontiac Grand Am get?

19 city 28 hwy, On my V-6 3.4 litre, this was correct till I installed all new Bosch Platinum 4 sparkplugs, on a 5 hour drive to Denver using 87 octane gas and a cruise speed of 75 mph, my grandam was getting 32 mpg average with the new plugs, in the city I was getting around 22 mpg, not a bad increase, I recommend Bosch Plat 4 plugs anyday.

Where is the turn signal flasher on a 2002 grand am and how do you change it?

"The turn signal flasher is on the drivers side behid the steering wheel have someone take it apart." ^^ That's the worst answer ever, by someone who clearly knows nothing of what they speak. The flasher is built into the hazards switch on these cars. To get at it, remove the bezel around the radio, remove the 3 screws holding in the hazard switch from behind and unplug. Simple as that. Your local dealer has new switches for around $28 (and prob has them in stock since most were faulty).

Where is the ECM located on a Pontiac fiero?

How do you know if your water pump is going bad 96 Pontiac?

Most GM water pumps will either make a distinctive "rattling" type noise or actually lose coolant from a hole in the casting. Look for a stain or fresh coolant under the area you park the vehicle.

How do you reset a new timing chain tensioner for 1998 Grand AM 24L?

This is for the timing chain tensioner that does not have the shoe attached to it. To reset the tensioner, push the inner piston all of the way down inside of the outer piston that it sits in. This may take a little work since the inner piston will be filled with oil and is spring loaded. Just work it a little at a time until you can push the inner piston all of the way in and it locks in place. Now check and see if the inner piston will spring out properly. Push in on the inner piston hard and release it quickly. Try to keep your hand over it just in case it pops out all of the way. I haven't seen it happen, but have heard about it. It kind of works like a "click" pen. It should pop out all of the way where you can see little holes around the inner piston. If it catches anywhere in between it's travel, reset it a few times to try and get it working smoothly. If it keeps on catching, it is recommended to purchase a new one since it will not set properly when it is installed. It cost me around $38.00 for a new one and is a lot less of a headache than tearing the side of the motor apart again if the old one does not set properly. To install it into the motor, push the inner piston all of the way in until it locks in place. If you purchase a new one, pop the innner piston in and out a few times. New tensioners like to stick a little since they have been locked in place for a while. With the inner piston all of the way in, bolt the tensioner in place with the shoe already installed. With a small pry bar or screwdriver, push down the inner piston. You can use the shoe as a leverage point, but be careful not to twist it too much so that it breaks. This will have to be done as quickly as you can just like when you were pushing it in by hand. It may take a couple of times, but should pop out. I personally like to put the bolt for the harmonic balancer in place and slowly turn the crank shaft in a clockwise motion to try and get some of the slack out of the timing chain. This should take care of it and hopefully there won't be a timing chain rattle.

Why is air bag light constantly on in a 1996 grand am gt?

I too have a problem with my 1996 grand am airbag light staying on. It came on one day after I had taken my car to the car wash but didn't think anything of it just that I would have it looked at when I take it in for it's oil change which I am doing tomorrow. Today when I got home from taking my car from the car wash I removed the mats from the floor to vacuum the carpet only to find that under each mat front and back was a pool of water! While researching where this soapy water could have seeped into my car when there are no apparent signs of corrosion I found the answer to my air bag light problem. Below is what I found on the Transportation Canada Website........ Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation Directorate Information: 1-800-333-0371 TP14665E

Vehicle Safety Advisory

V 2007-02 E

October 2007 ---- Transport Canada advises the owners of older Pontiac Grand Am vehicles that certain conditions can cause a malfunction in the vehicle air bag computer, resulting in the sudden deployment of either the driver's, passenger's or both frontal air bags. A sudden deployment of an air bag, without a crash, may cause injury or a loss of vehicle control. In a number of occurrences, when substantial amounts of water have entered the vehicle, damage to the air bag computer located on the vehicle floor pan has resulted. Typically the red air bag warning light will come "ON", indicating that a system fault is present. In 2003, General Motors of Canada issued a Notice of Defect meeting the requirements of section 10 of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, informing owners of the concern at that time. It appears that a number of current owners are not aware of the concern and water has entered the vehicle damaging the air bag computer and potentially other vehicle components. Should you be the owner of a 1996 - 1997 Pontiac Grand Am, it is recommended that you have the interior vehicle floor examined for the presence of water and have the air bag computer examined for signs of corrosion. Also, if you notice or have noticed that the air bag warning light stays "ON", you should NOT drive the vehicle. Have the vehicle towed to a repair facility for inspection. It is important for vehicle users to recognize that as vehicles age in our Canadian environment, corrosion takes place and can influence vehicle operation and safety. This is an example of a corroded air bag computer. In the interest of safety, air bag computers should only be inspected and repaired by an automotive technician. A copy of this consumer advisory by Transport Canada on October,16 2007 and further information concerning Defect Investigations and Recalls can be found on Transport Canada's website at: www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/ Hope this helps.

Can you clean a catalytic converter for a 99 grand am se?

Cleaning a catalytic converter to reset an error code is only a temporary solution for a 1999 Grand Am SE. To clean the catalytic converter in this case you would need to gently blow out any build up with an air compressor. You would also need to replace or clean the oxygen sensor as well or the code will not reset.

Heatter in car is not putting out heat on 2000 geo tracker and blower vents dont blow down to your feet how can you check this?

There is a cable on the passanger side of the center console that goes up under a plate behind the glove box. Remove the glove box and the plastic plate and follow the cable. The cable attaches to a little metal rod that adjusts the heater temperature. If this cable becomes separated from the rod then it will snap the rod back to the "cold" temp selection. Simply reattach the cable to the rod and adjust the temp. But, you will probally have to do this every time you change the temp settings on your heater control panel. So, I suggest you change it to the hot setting in the winter and leave it there until you want to change it again to cold in the summer.

2004 Pontiac Grand Am stop fuse?

one fuse panel is on the passenger "end" of the dash (open door to see it) lift up - then out to open it it has a usage chart on the inside of the panel if there is a fuse it will be listed there

...keep in mind that it may not be an electrical issue. There is a spring that holds the display module within you dash and the part that holds the spring has been known to break which causes the display module to swing out of range. You can find out if this is the case by first making sure your HUD is turned on, then while looking at the spot in your windshield where you would normally see your HUD display, drop your head down low...keep lowering your head and you might be surprised to see a tiny bit of your display. This would indicate that it a broken spring or spring hook.

If you have the courage, you can take apart you dash and fix the problem yourself, otherwise seek a qualified mechanic.

How do you test a block heater on a Pontiac g6?

Easiest is to plug in the block heater cord with the hood open. Follow the cord to where the block heater is located and you should hear a gurgling sound similar to an electric kettle. If you don't check your power source. If you can reach the block heater unplug the cord from it and check the power at the end that plugs into the heater with a 2 prong tester to make sure it's not the cord causing the problem.
