How do you tell if a cv driveshaft is bad?

First signs of a bad cv is, clicking noise when making a sharp turn. Alot of times the cv boot ( rubber boot that covers the cv joint and holds the grease in ) tears and leaks the grease out, you can turn the wheel all the way and take a look at the boot where the axle attaches to the wheel if there is a rip you will see grease everywhere, if the cv isn't clicking yet it will soon.

Do NOT use transmission fluid in your power steering. It is designed for automatic transmissions, and a few rare manual transmissions only. (1965 Plymouth "Slant Six" manual transmission used automatic transmission fluid).

Why does the steering wheel makes a creaking sound when it is tunred which is louder when the car is stationary or moving very slowly?

you are low on steering fluid(maybe a leak) get it checked out before it is too late.

UPDATE: (I can now answer my own question) Actually, the answer has since been discovered to be bad strut mount bearing plates (Toyota Camry). Once the strut mounts (and their bearing plates) were replaced, all has been quiet for the past 8 months. The creaking was similar to the sound of a old wooden ship in the movies (like Pirates of the Caribbean).

The most common cause is the CV joints. They have a finite life and cannot be lubricated. Full replacement is the only solution. By the way, DO BOTH SIDES!

What is the steering switch for on a 1995 Lincoln town car?

It adjusts how much power assist is given. In one direction less boost is given than in the other. To me it works much better in the 'less assist' position. In the 'more assist' position is too much assistance, you lose the feel of the road and can oversteer very easily. But if one was weak or disabled the extra help could be useful. Note this is controlled by the same processor that handles air bag suspension. If a fuse for air bag suspension had blown or been pulled, you will be on full assist all the time regardless of how the switch is set.

What is a tie rod?

I believe your referring to a tie rod, which is a steering component. There is an inner tie rod and an outer tie rod. The inner tie rod connects to the steering rack which is what is used to turn your wheels left or right. The outer tie rod connects to the inner tie rod and also to the steering knuckle. If you've got a newer 300 series car, chances are your gonna have them replaced because there are some problems with tie rods on these cars. A TIE rod connects the steering to the wheel.
