First remove the two screws in the plastic cover surrounding the gauges. This piece snaps out, be gentle!! Then remove the 2 screws at the base of the gauges, also there is 1 screw at the top of the gauges. Then pull the gauges out, disconnect the three wiring harnesses. Thats it. simmpler then it sounds. There is a cable which runs from your front axle to the odometer/speedometer. Inside this cable is a gear box. As the front axle spin it transfers how fast your axle is spinning to your speedometer. This also spins your odometer. Something is either worn out in the cable, gearbox, or one of the ends of the cable has become disconnected. It's a very inexpensive fix.

The cable is routed through a metal tube made into the center "tunnel" in the floor pan. It also goes through the engine fan housing inside another tube. I would not suggest trying to thread a used cable with a frayed end back through the tube. Get a new cable and consult the Robert Bentley manual for more details.

Not as easy as it might seem. The car's handbook and the Haynes manual were no help so I figured it out myself just now. The clear bulb lens/bulb holder/bulb module pop out together from outside the car. Looking at the license tag light from outside the car you'll see two tiny dogs at the bottom and one central clip at the top. It's the clip you need to target. I used a handy little hooked dental pick to prise down the clip and pull the top of the lens out at the same time. The unit comes out on the end of its electrical wire harness. Then just twist the bulb holder 1/8th turn counterclockwise and it'll come off the lens module and expose the bulb. The bulb pulls out - it's a pretty standard 5W bulb.

Open the trunk, inside there is a panel that you have to remove in front of the tail lamp. Inside that hole is a star like screw, unscrew it all the way off. Use a flat butter knife to pry the tail light assembly off. Insert the butter knife under the lense near the seam closest to hatchback. Be sure that you only pry from that side, there is a locking tab that slides underneath towards the outside so you will have to lift the one side up first. After the assembly is removed, twist the harness counter clockwise to remove the bulb from the housing, press down on the bulb and turn counter clockwise to remove it..

WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE HEADLIGHT WILL "FLOP" AROUND AND PULL IT OUT, REMEMBERING TO SEE HOW THE THREE CONNECTORS ARE LOCATED (I.E - IS ONE CONNECTOR AT 12 O CLOCK POSITION AND THE OTHER TWO ARE AT 9 AND 3 OR ARE THEY AT 3,6 AND 9, ETC.). rE-ASSEMBLY IS THE OPPOSITIE. tHE TRICK IS TO GET THE THIN SPRING WIRE BACK IN PLACE. YOU HAVE TO SQUEEZE THE SPRING AND RE-POSITION IT SO IT KEEPS THE BULB SECURLY IN PLACE

Having just changed the bulb, I would advise taking the whole headlight assembly out first. It is near impossible to feel or imagine how to change the bulb without seeing it. First, use a Phillips screwdriver to take the single screw holding the strip off just below the headlight assembly. By doing so, you will now see the other two bottom bolts holding the headlight in. Take all four bolts out then disconnect the bulb from behind. Then proceed as above.

NO. Generally speaking Volkswagen are NOT reliable cars. When you first buy one you think -"wow, this is pretty cool." Then, after your fourth or fifth repair that just seems to be necessary WAY to early in the car's life, you say "This isn't too cool." You'll also end up just living with weird faults that you won't repair. (for example - and this is only one - why do the doors freeze shut causing you to pull the rubber off? Its ridiculous). I love VW's in a lot of ways - I've owned three. They are fun to drive and look great, but man do they know how to break. If reliability is what you are looking for, DO NOT buy a VW.
