How do you replace the headlight bulb located on a 2000 VW Beetle?

Here are 10 easy steps!

1. Ok, pop the hood. 2. Now look down into the front corner of the engine compartment to where the headlight is. You will see a black assembly tucked up in the fender. Yes you can access the inner fender from the engine compartment. The whole headlight assembly is close to 8" long. Since the driver side light is more interesting we will do that one. Yes you can get the drivers die headlamp out without touching the battery. I replaced the driver's side low beam lamp without removing the battery. Before trying to do the next step of the black lever you must release the metal clamp flip the small coat hanger looking shaped like an M up this releases the metal strap around the headlight assembly bucket now prees the button next to the lever the button has a crosshatch design on the small button about a half inch by quarter inch. You must find the button if you try to move the black lever up without pusing in the small button you will break the lever and then you will be off to VW to buy a new headlight bucket asembly. In my '99 Beetle there is a lever that sticks out of the headlamp assembly shield. Lifting up on the lever rotates a ring that unlocks two posts on the headlamp assembly. It can now slide straight out of the fender. The assembly rides on three tracks left side, right side and bottom.)

3. There is a black metal strap and clasp around the assembly with a metal clip on it. The clip flips back and opens up. There is also a black plastic lever sticking out of the assembly.

Next the clasp and metal strap you will notice the lever that expels the light assembly. Mine was curved indicating that you pull up on it. As you do so the lever slides you will see the headlight start to come out of the fender.

4. Once the lever is up as far as it can go you can pull the headlight assembly out of the front of the fender carefully. This was a bit messy since the caulking on our 98 was starting to go and the dealership had put some goo around it to stop leaks I think. The light assembly in our case did take some coaxing to get it to slide out and we had to play with it for awhile, but it did finally come out.

5. On the back you unplug the wires.

6. There is a plastic cap that comes off and you can access the headlight bulbs

7. After the housing is off, you will notice the lamp connector. There is a spring or hasp that keeps the lamp in the housing.

8. We had to change the low beam lamp (the one on the top of the assembly), so once the clip was removed the lamp can be pulled out of the assembly..

9. Once the lamp is pulled out you are almost done. The lamp is connected to the wires with a blade type connector. Just wiggle it from side to side to remove it. Take the new bulb (DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS ON THE NEW LAMP, if you do it will be ruined and you will be replacing it shortly). Once you placed the new lamp in, you can follow the instructions in the reverse order to put things back together.

10. When you are totally done, before you hook the battery back up and totally button things up, try the new light out quickly to make sure its working. All done.

AnswerBeetle headlight bulbs are changed by taking the whole headlight assembly out. It is locked in place by a sliding(rotating) retaining ring at the back of the headlight. The ring is released by pressing a button next to the ring handle. It is not difficult but ripping out the headlight can be a bit "scary"the first time.

AnswerNew Beetle Headlight and Bulb Replacement

Those of you who have owned a New Beetle since 98 or 99 may have already experienced a burned-out headlight bulb. As you have found out, these are totally different in concept than the old Beetle cousins. The only similarity, if you call it that, is the general look of the headlight with the big "bug-eye" lens. Instead of replacing an entire sealed-beam headlight, you only replace a small lightbulb, just like any other modern car out there today. Not only that, but there are two bulbs one for the low beam and a separate one for the high beam. The reflector, likewise, is made in two sections. One section is the projector portion (the lens on the top) that carries the low beam. The high beam bulb is below it, and you can see this bulb plainly. Hopefully, none of you New Beetle owners have had to, or need to, replace an entire headlight assembly (read expensive!). However, if complete replacement is necessary, dont fret. Since you have to take the entire headlight assembly out just to change a bulb, this will be covered in the article as well.

You will not need any tools to do the job (one advantage over the old Beetle!). You may want to have some adhesive remover handy, along with paper towels, some car cleaner/wax, and a soft clean cloth.

Both high and low beam bulbs are H1 bulbs. This information can be found in your owners manual or the Bentley manual for the New Beetle. Dont depend on the auto parts store or aftermarket suppliers catalogs to tell you anything different. When you take out the old bulb, it should have "H1" stamped on the metal base or etched on the glass itself. Low beam is a 55 watt bulb, and high beam is 60 watts.

Before you try removing the headlight housings, check for a blown fuse first, since the headlight circuits on these cars are fused. The fuse is located on the regular fuse panel inside the car, on the left side of the dashboard behind the removable cover. Well, since there are no visible screws anywhere around, how do I get the headlight out? Its not that hard at all.

Open the hood. Locate the seam between the nosepiece and the front fender (either side). Go up between the first two fender mounting bolts and look down a few inches. See a small knob sticking out at you? That is a release lever for the headlight assembly. Push in on it slightly and pull all the way up as far as the lever will go. Now push on the headlight from behind with one hand and be prepared to catch the assembly with the free hand from the front. It may take a bit of a push because there is some gooey adhesive between the headlight and the fender. Once you have the headlight out, pull the connector off the back of the housing and take the headlight somewhere where it is easy to work on. Put it on a pillow or something soft so you dont risk scratching the lens. There is a black plastic cover on the back of the housing. See a tab on it? Push on this tab and pull the cover down to expose the bulbs. There is a metal spring clip that holds these bulbs in place. Undo this and the bulb will fall out. Take out the new bulb and compare it with the one you are replacing. Make sure the wattage is correct, since they are both H1 bulbs. Never touch the glass part of the bulb itself with your fingers.

Use the soft cloth to handle the bulb if needed. Line up the tabs of the bulb base with the slots in the reflector housing and drop the bulb in. Put the spring clip back on and make sure the ends of the clip are in securely. Put the bulb cover back on. Now is the time to clean up the mess around the fender where the headlight mounts. Remember seeing that nasty-looking goo seep out from around the rubber seal on your headlights? Thats the adhesive I was talking about earlier.

Take the adhesive remover on the paper towels and remove this stuff from the fender before putting the headlight back in. Dont remove all of it from behind the headlight itself, as it is there to keep excess amounts of water from getting behind the headlight. Just remove enough to where it wont make a mess anymore. A little wax around the mounting area on the fender will detail things out nicely. Position the headlight up to the fender. Push on the wire connector. Line up the tabs on the headlight assembly to the slots in the headlight housing in the fender and push the whole thing in. Sometimes things wont line up on the first try, but keep trying. The headlight should go up against the fender fairly easily. Once you get it to this point, grab the release lever, push all the way down, and lock the headlight assembly into place. All you do now is test the lights. Thats it! The headlight aim should not have been affected during this procedure. Some wax or glass cleaner will be good for cleaning the lenses and make them sparkle again. If you have those trick blue bulbs or other colors, always keep a spare bulb handy, of the same color and manufacturer, so you wont be stuck with odd colors until you get the right replacement.

AnswerThe bulbs screw in from the back. Sometimes you have to remove the light assy. AnswerOpen the hood and look for the black 'sleeve' that holds the headlight. There is an arm that extends toward the engine. You should see a channel that the arm can slide in that loosens the headlight from the 'sleeve'. IMPORTANT: DEPRESS THE SMALL CROSSHATCHED BUTTON NEXT TO THE ARM. THIS UNLOCKS THE ARM AND ALLOWS IT TO MOVE IN THE CHANNEL. After sliding the arm the full length of the channel, carefully pry the headlight from the fender ... it is tight and requires patience! When the headlight is pulled from the fender, disconnect the wire harness. The headlight is now separated from the car. Remove the black shroud from the back of the headlight. This exposes the bulb connection. Carefully disconnect the clip connection from the back of the bulb, unlock the wire pressure clasp and pull the bulb out. DO NOT TOUCH THE NEW BULB WITH BARE FINGERS - OIL FROM YOUR FINGERS COULD CAUSE THE BULB TO BLOW. Replace the bulb, reconnect the clip connection, replace the wire clasp, replace the black shroud, reconnect the wire harness and slide the headlight back into the fender. Hint: Spray the channel with WD40 to make the replacement easier. When headlight is back in place, slide the arm back into place and you are done ... congratulations!

How can you find out what year your VW bug is?

The chassis number is written on the tunnel under the rear seat. The engine number is written on the crankcase under the generator. Then check these numbers against the VW list (theres one in John Muirs book). You probably also have an import plate that's behind the spare wheel.

What is the tire pressure on a 2000 beetle?

Generally recommended factory tire pressure is located in the door jamb. If not, 32psi gives best economy while 28 psi gives a cushy ride.

How do you replace valve covers 1967 vw beetle?

Take a large flat head screw driver or small pry bar and pry the wire "bail" up and tap lightly around the cover to break the seal and it should come out and then down. Make sure you don't pry too hard on the metal cover lip as it can warp and not seal tight the next time you put it on. Always but a new gasket on to keep the chance of leaks to a minimum.

Why is my automobile air conditioning low pressure and high pressure equalized - low pressure is too high?

Either the compressor is not on, or is not working. The pressures are supposed to equalize when it kicks off- either when you turn it off or when it cycles and cuts itself off for a minute. If the compressor is on and engaged and you are still reading equal pressures, it has gone out.

How do you replace the headlight bulb on a sebring 2001?

I just did this today on the passenger side headlight of my 2001 sebring. It took some time to figure it out, but I got it done today. You do have to remove the headlight assembly to change the bulb.

Instructions:

1. Unscrew the 2 small bolts that hold the assembly on, they are above the headlight assembly near the corners of the headlight. There should be 2 larger bolts between the small bolts that don't need to be removed. On mine, 1 of the small bolts had "4.8" on it and the large bolts had "9.8" on them. The recommended tool is a socket wrench, but I was able to do it with a crescent wrench held vertically.

2. Pull headlight assembly out in the car's forward direction. On the edge of the blinker side of the headlight, near the vertical center of the headlight, there is a peg on the assembly that goes in a hole on the frame, preventing the assembly from sliding sideways until the peg is out of the hole. After that is out, you have to get the bottom lip of the assembly above the top of the fender, I found that this took some force to pull out, but I don't think I broke anything by using that force. Note that you can only pull this out so far because of the wires connected to it.

3. Unplug the wire socket from the old bulb. To do this you'll probably need a screwdriver or other long metal rod (I used the long bolt that was previously holding the assembly in place) to get the plastic hooks of the wire socket around the side of the block protruding from the top of the bulb housing. Once the plastic hooks are no longer hooked onto the block, you can slide the wire socket off, unplugging it.

4. Unscrew the ring with ridges on the outside (only requires 1/3 of a rotation max, then it is unlocked and pulls off). I found it difficult to hand turn but was eventually able to do it with just my hand.

5. Pull the old bulb out, it's pretty straightforward.

6. Put the new bulb in, it has 3 grooves on it that line up with 3 ridges on the bulb housing, and as I was told by the autoparts clerk, don't touch the bulb with bare hands because your skin oils will decrease its lifespan. I chose to wear rubber gloves for this step to avoid contact with the bulb.

7. Screw the ridged wheel back on to lock in the bulb.

8. Plug the wire socket into the new bulb, the plastic hooks should be locked around the protruding block. At this point you can test the headlights to see if the new bulb works.

9. Slide the headlight assembly back into place; I found that I had to put the peg in the hole first, then try to get the bottom lip of the assembly past the top of the fender, this took some force, and there were some sounds that gave me some concern, but I don't think anything was broken.

10. Screw the bolts back in.

How do you replace clutch cable on 1971 beetle?

I have just changed one this week on my '73, so it's still fresh in my mind!

Equipment needed:

  • Ratchet, with 17mm and 13mm sockets, and short extension,
  • Wheel brace,
  • Axle stand,
  • Jack,
  • External circlip pliers (small),
  • A helper.
  • something to chock the front wheels.
  1. Chock the front wheels, jack up the nearside rear of the car, remove the wheel, and lower on to an axle stand.
  2. Remove the butterfly nut from the end of the existing cable. When you look through the wheel arch, you should be able to see the transmission housing, if you look above, and to the left of where the halfshaft exits the casing, you should see a bracket that holds the cables outer. Trace this back, and you will come across the clutch arm. This may be easier if you pull off the heater hose that runs between the heat exchanger and the heater channel.
  3. Go inside the car and slide the front seats back as far as they will go, and remove the front carpets, so to allow access to the pedal box assembly.
  4. From inside the passenger footwell, remove the two 17mm bolts that hold the end of the pedal assembly remove the cover and you will see the throttle cable, this needs to be pulled out of the arm. Remove the circlip from the end of the throttle assy, remove the arm, washer, and then the bracket. Take note of the position of the small protrusion on this which acts as the throttle stop, it's at the top of the bracket!
  5. From inside the drivers footwell, remove the two 13mm from the bottom of the bracket that is behind the throttle pedal, remove the two 17mm bolts from the clutch end of the assembly (on the other side of the tunnel from the firs two). Next, remove the circlip from the brake pedal arm, unhook the return spring, and slide off the link arm.
  6. The pedal box is no ready to withdraw. To do this, you will need to move it towards you and upwards to allow the throttle shaft to be partially withdrawn, then lift the throttle end up to as near vertical as you can, and the assembly should come out of the tunnel.
  7. The old cable should still be attached to the lever on the end of the assembly, and can now be completely withdrawn. If it is not, you will need to fish around inside the tunnel for it!
  8. You can now feed in the new cable, I found that the easiest way to do this was to put two fingers through the passenger side tunnel hole, and use these to guide the cable, which you feed in from the opposite side.
  9. You are now ready for your helper! Hook the new cable on to the end of the pedal assembly, and get your helper to gently pull the other end of the cable, as you need to keep it in tension, or the cable will slip off the hook when you put the assembly back in to the tunnel.
  10. With your helper still pulling the end of the cable, insert the assembly back in to the tunnel, and bolt it back into place. Be careful don't let the clutch pedal drop down, as the cable may unhook, and you will have to start again! Whilst you do this, ensure that the brake pedal return spring is free (it can get nipped between the shaft and the pedal stops on the floor)
  11. You can now feed the other end of the cable through the clutch arm, and re-fit the butterfly nut. Screw it on as far as you can, but don't overtighten, as you need to back it of later, to set the throw correctly!
  12. Go back inside the car, and gently push the clutch pedal, it shoud not move. Next, get your helper to back off the butterfly nut, a bit at a time, until you can push the pedal with your hand about 20mm or so, before the tension is taken up in the cable.
  13. That's the cable done. Re fit the brake link, spring and circlip, the throttle linkage and cable, and refit the end cover.
  14. Take the car off the axle stand, replace the wheel, take it off the jack, remove the chocks, replace the carpets, and you should be good to go!!
If you haven't yet bought your new cable, I would recommend buying a new rear cable outer - it is just a push fit as this gets full of crap over the years (mine was so full of crud, that I had to remove it, as the new cable would not pass through it). Also, it's a good idea to give the new cable a good covering of grease before you insert it.

Hope this helps!

Why would the check engine light come on after timing belt was replaced?

Something left unplugged or disconnected? Dumb luck? Some check engine lights are programmed to come on after a certain amount of miles. Maybe your car got to that mileage at the same time. I vote for the first one though. Use only Toyota original time belt

How do you replace a headlight bulb in a 1999 Honda Prelude?

1) Open hood (hey, some people need this step written out)

2) Locate the back of the headlamp assembly on either side that you will replace the bulb - You will see 2 rubber gasket seals with the headlamp bulb wires connectors in the middle of them.

3) For the bulb you want to replace, carefully pry off the rubber gasket seal and disconnect the wire connector.

4) Carefully locate the metal "locking" wire that is against the back of the bulb assembly and remove it by pushing in the end of the wire and unhooking it from the bulb holder assembly.

5) Remove the bulb and note the way it was sitting in the holder assembly.

6) Reinstall new bulb by placing it in the holder assembly the same way the old bulb was in and reverse steps 4 through 1.

- NOTE - DO NOT touch the bulb glass with your bare fingers or allow it to get dirty in anyway. Any dirt or oil on the bulb glass can cause it to explode when heated up by having it turned on. Use rubber or vinyl gloves to handle the bulbs.

How long can you drive a vehicle with bad struts and shocks?

Till you get in an accident and DIE from a loss of control. No but seriously it is a safety issue and they should be replaced ASAP. Driving with them can also cause excess front brake wear so it's one of those things that will cost you more to wait on.

Change temperature from Celsius to feinhiet in a 2000 VW beetle?

Switching display settingsIf your battery has run down, been disconnected, or replaced - your VW will reset itself to the default settings for the time and temperature. You will see the time displayed as military time where 6 PM will show as 18:00. You can set the clock to standard time (with the ignition OFF) by pressing both the H and M buttons. If you now turn the ignition switch to ON, you can press both the H and M button and the temperature will now display as Fahrenheit rather than celsius.

How do you change the spark plugs on a 1998 Subaru Legacy 4-cylinder wagon?

everyone i know has their own way of doing it but i just use a 6" extension on a 3/8 air ratchet. if you work at it a bit you can finangle it down in there and get them out. you have to remove the air box that holds your air filter out of the way and remove the washer fluid bottle on the otherside. You should replace plugwires, coilpack and plugs all in one go. Plugwires and a coil pack are $65 & $100 at the dealer, respectively (you can do 30% to 50% better buying them online if you have the time). I bought $8 Autolite APP3924s in place of $30 factory original NGK PFR5B11s, but suit yourself. Gap s/b .044. Buy some anti-sieze lube too while youre at it. Drivers side: Remove the battery (10mm wrench) and set aside. Take out the two 13mm nuts holding the window washer jug and lift the vessel to free it up. Dont bother disconnecting it, just rotate it onto its side and place it where the battery used to be. Passenger side: Loosen the clamp that attaches the flexible boot to the airbox. Undo the two springclips that retain the aircleaner cover. This should free up the connecting section from the air cleaner to the airbox. Lift it up and gently rotate it out of the way; no need to undo any electrical connections. Note the second airhose hidden under the flexible boot. Be sure to reconnect that when you put things back together or the engine wont run guess how I found that out? Remove the two 13mm bolts holding the lower half of the aircleaner box and gradually pull the box away from the fender (theres a rubber plug holding it in). Now you can get at the plugwires. Note how they are routed the ones nearest the firewall go to the plugs nearest the firewall. Remember that when you put things back. Now is a good time to clean things up so you wont shovel crap back into the hole later on. Youll probably need large pliers to remove the wires from the plugs; you can see them but a firm direct grip is problematic. They wont want to come out but they can be persuaded. Before you start pulling, free the rubber from the head first - a stick or even a bent screwdriver helps there. Once theyre off the sparklugs are exposed. Youll have just over an inch and a quarter of space between the head and the body. Using a 3/8 drive set, if you insert a 5/8 sparkplug wrench and then a short extension, the end of the extension will be just visible. Connect a breaker wrench to that and pray as you loosen. Switch to a ratchet once things are freed up if you want. After the plug is free, remove the wrench parts one at a time, and then the plug. Put a clean new plug (washer and top-nut included) with a tiny amount of antisieze smeared ONLY on the threads and none on the ceramic into the plug wrench. Feed into the sparkplug hole followed by the shore extension. Use your fingers to get it started then add the ratchet. Once you hit bottom, you want to torque to 20 in/lbs. or until the washer collapses. Repeat for each cylinder. Remove and replace the coil pack now if you were going to (10mm), then re-route the plugwires. Make very sure they are fully seated onto the tops of the plugs. If you do any twisting (dont) twist only in a clockwise direction so as to not unscrew the little nut on the top of the sparkplug. All done but reassembly now, so in reverse order from the directions above, put the aircleaner back together, put the window washer back in place, reinstall the battery, look everything over carefully, and take a test drive.

What other engines will work in a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle that has a 18L Turbo in it?

The Jetta engine should fit

Answer

Any four-cylinder watercooled VW engine will FIT in the car; every watercooled inline-4 Volkswagen engine has the same bellhousing pattern and mounting bolt hole locations. The question is, which engines will work? And really, because of all the electronics in your car I wouldn't guarantee anything but another 1.8 Turbo would work.
