Alternators

The alternator should only have to be replaced if it has either failed to provide sufficient current to keep the battery charged and the car's electrical system supplied, or it has suffered mechanical damage like a worn bearing or damaged casing. Replacement for age alone is not necessary.

The fuse between the battery and alternator is a fusible link in the small wire that hooks up to the battery terminal along with the regular battery cable. It looks like a thick spot in the wiring. To replace, the cable must be replaced. .

To remove ours we had to go underneath and take it out that way. Once we got all the bolts out we had to take off the brackets to get it to drop out. Installation is the reverse of removal. Quite a PITA!!!

No, you must have a charged battery for the alternator to work.

You failed to mention what year the S10 is but, most of them use a fusible link to protect the alternator circuit.

i drove over caked snow while trying to turn, the car could to back up because of the ice of the ground.After three atepts, the car could not start again ,but all the light are on and the radia still pray. Car: 2005 Toyota corolla

TAke the belt off, then the neg battery cable. Remove the wires and mounting bolts.

I would add that it's a very tight fit but you can remove the old unit and insert the new unit without having remove or relocate other parts/brackets. I did the job myself, and there were several times I almost gave up - but it can be done it just takes time to rotate and jimmy it into the position for mounting.

I've never done it but here are some instructions: IGNITION KEY LOCK CYLINDER 1. Disconnect negative battery terminal 2. Remove the steering wheel 3. Pry the lock plate cover off, using two screwdrivers. 4. Push the lock ring in sufficiently to allow removal of the ring retainer with two screwdrivers. 5. Remove the lock plate. 6. Remove the retaining screw and remove the turn signal lever. 7. Remove the three retaining screws and the hazard switch button. 8. Remove the trim panel from benieath the steering column to gain access to the turn signal switch harness. 9. Unplug the switch electrical connector. 10. Pull the turn signal switch up sufficiently to provide access to the ignition switch. 11. With the dey in the On position, remove the ignition warning buzzer switch contacts with needlenose pliers. 12. Remove the switch retaining screw. 13. Withdraw the switch from the steering column. IGNITION SWITCH 1. Unbolt the steering column bracket from the dash and lower the column. 2. Unplug the electrical connector from the switch. 3. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position. Remove the two screws securing the switch to the steering column and remove the switch. GOOD LLLUCK!!!

Everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the library should have a professional shop manual available, for FREE, in the reference section(make copies of the correct sections) read up and fix it like a PRO! :) good luck-Dave

It depends on what model you have, but most are the same.

Disconnect the battery! Loosen the tensioner for the serpentine belt and pull the belt off the alternator pulley. Remove the bolt holding the alternator at the 4:00 o'clock position
Remove the nut at the right rear side of the alternator
Remove the bolt at the next to it nearer you. All bolts have 15mm heads, but you're going to need a deep well socket to get the nut off. Pull out the alternator and remove the plug from it and also remove the red wire attached to the back. You're going to need a 13mm socket and a 13mm flat wrench. Replace the alternator by reversing the steps above. Reattaching the serpentine belt is a pain.

In your PCM not the alternator

Its built in the alternator be sure that you replace the alt with the same amp. alt it could be a 90 or 124 amp alternator. Replace the belt while you have the alternator off.

there should be a diagram on the side of the relay with the pin numbers and some symbols. the pins that are on the coil or control side can be wired power and ground. this generally goes through a switch. the load side has a small gate looking symbol these can be wired power and ground either way and this is the side that you connect to whatever you are powering on. make sure to use a fuse on this circuit on the power lead.

the alternator is located on the passenger side of the motor towards the bottom front.

Looking from the front of the engine , the alternator is bolted to the front of the engine in the upper left . It is driven by the serpentine belt and is located between the oil fill cap and the big rubber air intake tube.

It sounds lke the battery. Check the battery cables to make sure they are tightly attached to the battery. Check for debris that may need cleaning off.

Your radio and fan may have shoted out or the wrong amps are being used. If there isn't enough amps to run everything. The battery might not have enough juice, or there are wires touching somewhere.

Take off the negative battery cable then the wires on the alt then the bolts that hold it on. First take off the serpentine belt. There should be a schematic of how to reinstall it on the fan shroud. if it is not there you can draw your own before you take it off. Don't rely on memory.

it depends on the vehicle but usually 5 minutes to 15 i have personally changed several myself and im not a mechanic by trade. Most have 2 bolts and a tension bolt for the belt

some cars require the radiator and the a/c condenser to be taken out just to see the alternator (2000) cadi deville book time is 3 hrs plus a a/c recharge and coolant flush. i wouldn't say 5 or ten minutes all car have a labor guide for all labor related repairs chilton and motor manuals you can go to a public library and get info on disc or books . i repaired autos for 35 years and you would not believe the places they put these things average time is 1 hr. and includes load test and alt output test

I have a 1993 dodge grand caravan, and have taken the alternator off of the bracket, but it will not fit down the back of the motorand under the fire wall. I have tried to remove the alternator bracket , but it looks as though it is trapped behind the tensioner pulley. I don't see how to remove the pulley bracket and don't know if this will work at all. What a crazy design! I hope someone out there can help.

I had a car suddenly stop while I was driving once when I was approximately 30 miles or less from home. Luckily, it stopped right at a car parts store. The man checked the battery and it was okay, so he checked the alternator and it was bad. After he jumped it, he recommended that I go straight home because the battery would just go dead again. Going that distance, I didn't have any problems, but I had been going away from home and he said he wouldn't try to get to where I was going about 10 miles up the road and then go back home.

You need a 17mm wrench. All you need to do is rotate the tensioner pulley near the alternator and slide the new belt on. It is quite simple. I have a 1994 jetta 2.0l which I have done lots of work on, too much to list.
