In the general case, cars overheat because of a bad thermostat, low coolant level, blockage in the coolant system, insufficient antifreeze percentage, fan blockage, or water pump failure.

Ford vehicles come from the factory with a 50 / 50 mix of distilled water and the

correct type of antifreeze for the vehicle

Ford states not to exceed 60% antifreeze in the mix ( when you live in a colder climate )

They also state to not drop below 40% antifreeze in order to provide corrosion protection ( although the corrosion inhibitor package in the antifreeze does

" wear out "

Most commonly it is a mixture of ethylene glycol. Each manufacturer uses their own dyes and anti-rust additives to the recipe.

Be sure the thermostat is not installed backwards.

During a hard freeze, if there is only water and no antifreeze in the motor of your vehicle: at best, the freeze plugs will burst or pop out; at worst, the block will crack.

Antifreeze is a liquid added to the cooling system of an automobile to ensure that the water within it does not freeze solid. The functioning of antifreeze is based on the observation that the freezing temperature of a liquid is lowered when something is dissolved in it. This something can be either a solid or a liquid. This phenomenon was originally discovered by the French scientist Francois Raoult in the late 19th century. Raoult also discovered that the degree to which the freezing point is lowered is linearly related to the number of molecules dissolved in the liquid. The decrease of freezing point in diluted solutions can be explained as follows. As the temperature of the liquid decreases, the molecules making it up move more slowly and experience an attractive force between each other. In pure water, at 32°F (0°C), this attractive force is powerful enough to arrange the water molecules in a regular crystal pattern, greatly decreasing their mobility and causing the formation of ice. In theory, anything that dissolves in water can be used as an antifreeze. In practice, there are several limiting constraints. First is that the substance should mix together with water in any ratio. Some liquids are difficult to dissolve, or crystallize at lower temperatures. Second is that the antifreeze should be inert, that is, not react chemically with anything it comes into contact with in the cooling system. Third, it should be cheap; and fourth, it should not cause the buildup of unwanted pressure within the cooling system -- this means the antifreeze should have a high boiling point. The almost universally-used substance that matches all these specifications is ethylene glycol, which has a boiling point of 387°F (197°C). A cooling system that has a 1:1 ratio between glycol and water has a freezing point of about -40°F(-40°C), ideal for the normal range of applications.

Should only cost you around 90 to 100 dollars.

1. Open the radiator cap.

2. Disconnect the top radiator hose.

3. Run the engine for a couple of minutes with the hose off.

4. Insert tap water hose into the radiator where the top hose should be.

5. Run water into the radiator until clear water comes out of the radiator top hose.

6. Continue idling the engine, remove the tap water hose from the radiator, shut off engine as soon as the water stops coming out of the top water hose of the radiator.

7. Reconnect top water hose and fill radiator with antifreeze. Start engine and top off antifreeze.

Suppose there are G gallons of the 30% mix.

Then G gallons of 30% contain 0.3*G gallons of the active ingredient.

Also 10% gallons = 0.1 gallons of 93% contain 0.093 gallons of the active ingredient.

Therefore, the total volume is G+0.1 gallons which contains 0.3*G + 0.093 gallons of the active ingredient.

So its strength is (0.3*G + 0.393)/(G+0.1) which is 65% or 0.65

Thus 0.3*G + 0.093 = 0.65*G + 0.065

So that 0.028 = 0.35G

Or G = 0.08 gallons

The water inside a hose can freeze.

There should be two hoses which attach to this tank. Find the one that's disconnected... that's where it'll reattach. How... that depends. If it's just a clamp which came off, you go to NAPA or wherever, and buy a hose clamp... get the ones that you tighten down with a screwdriver or an 8mm or 5/16" socket... don't get the self tightening ones which you just use a pair of pliers for.. those are junk. If the piece which the hose attaches to came off the reservoir tank, you'll have to replace the reservoir tank.

The manufacture requires a 180 degree thermostat. If your fan clutch is operating normally and the radiator has good flow it will probably be around 190 to 205. It may run a little cooler when the car is moving.

Does your rover 214 have a k series engine if it does it could be a problem with your head gasket

I am having sort of the same problem. My coolant light comes on after I've been driving for a while or if my car has been idling. I have checked all of my fluids and the car doesn't seem to be over heating or running hot. Any suggestions on what might cause this? My dad seems to think there is a short in the wire or the sending unit.

The low coolant sensor is a poor design and prone to failure. Get this - you have to buy the bottle to replace it, as the sensor cannot be purchased separately. The good news is, just unplug it. The light will go out and no codes will be generated. Just check your coolant level from time to time, like we all should do anyways when we check other fluids.

i put to much coolant in my serge tank. I have a very sm.

leak near the top of the radiator when i stop my car it really comes out. but my temperature gage does not read too hot. i filled the serge tank almost to the top. now it's kind of empty. I'm not adding any more coolant unless my car overheats

The best and only antifreeze to use is exactly what is listed in your owners manual.

THE BEST WAY IS TO SLIGHTLY ELEVATE THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE, JACK IT UP, THE REASON FOR JACKING IT UP IS TO ENSURE ALL THE BUBBLE FLOAT TO THE HIGHEST POINT AND GET OUT OF THE SYSTEM. NOW MAKE SURE YOUR HEATING IS SET TO "FULL HEAT" AND TURNED ON "LOW" FAN SPEED. THEN OPEN THE BLEEDER VALVE LOCATED ON TOP OF THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING, IF YOUR COOLING SYSTEM IS EMPTY NOW IS THE TIME TO FIL IT UP, U SHOULD HEAR A GENTILE HISSING SOUND AS U POUR IT IN, THIS IS AN INDICATION OF THE AIR ESCAPING. WHEN U SEE THE COOLANT COME OUT THE BLEEDER U KNOW THE AIR IS GONE. TO MAKE SURE U GOT ALL OF IT OUT TURN THE ENGINE ON, WITH THE RESERVOIR CAP FOR THE COOLANT BOTTLE OFF, OPEN THE VALVE ON THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING AGAIN, KEEP ENGINE AT IDLE DO NOT REV IT, ADDING FLUID UNTIL THERE IS A STEADY STREAM DRIPPING OUT. LET ENGINE REV UNTIL COOLING FAN GOES ON WHEN IT GOES ON U WILL PROABALY HAVE TO ADD FLUID TO THE RESERVOIR DO NOT LET IT GO LOW KEEP IT CONSTANT. ONCE THE FAN HAS STOPPED PUT CAP BACK ON RESERVOIR AND YOU'RE DONE.

Yes, if the coolant is still clean and has not been in the system for long.

But if you are changing the coolant at the recommended mileage of your cars manual then it should not be reused.
