Why do you need a thermostat in your car?

A thermostat can prevent overheating on the engine, air-conditioning, by signaling such occurences through warning sounds.

What could be wrong if temp gauge reads cold and heater blows cold air on ford windstar?

I'm not a mechanic / technician but it sounds like your engine cooling

thermostat is sticking open ( assuming that the electric engine cooling fans

are not running continuously )

How do you make your heater blow hot air in your 93 Toyota Paseo?

There are 2 most likely sources of your heat problem. 1.If your thermostat is defective, you will get very little heat from your car. 2.You may have bad heater core. I will describe the thermostat problem since it is more easily repaired as a DIY( do it yourself) and is more likely to be your problem. First, make sure that your fan is working. Turn off your radio, listen to the air noise as your move the fan speed knob on your panel. Assuming that that is working, you need to check your coolant temp gauge. Its located on the bottom left of your gauge cluster. Start your vehicle, say for your normal morning work commute and observe the temp gauge. Your car may need 5-10 minutes to warm up depending on the outdoor temperature. After this time frame, look at the position of the needle on your temp gauge. If your thermostat is working properly, the needle should move to the middle of the range of the gauge. If the gauge stays near or at the bottom of the gauge, your thermostat is bad and needs to be replaced. If the gauge reads at the middle and you can't get any heat, you may have a heater core problem or your heater core vacuum valve is malfunctioning.

If you change the thermostat and the heater core and the rad cap holds pressure why does it still blow cold air?

There probably are several possible causes, and I will provide those which I can recall. In order for the heater core to heat the air passing through it, there must be HOT water [engine coolant] FLOWING THROUGH the core. Obviously, in spite of the replacement parts you installed, something MUST BE preventing that flow of hot water. Most, if not all, vehicle heating systems which use engine coolant as the source of heat, have a control valve [linked to the heater controls on the dash] which "turns off" the coolant flow when the control is off, and vice versa. If THAT valve is in the off position, hot coolant CANNOT flow to the heater core. Possible causes for that failure of coolant flow could include: 1) The control VALVE is "frozen" (stuck), in the CLOSED POSITION. This could be caused by corrosion, or a broken or disconnected control cable linkage. 2) Some kind of BLOCKAGE ANYWHERE in the system. This could be in any of the hoses, or in the the connector "elbows" to the engine, or some other point in the engine cooling system. 3)Unless you have had the vehicle since it was new, a previous owner may have installed an extra, inline cutoff valve somewhere in the system, in order to fully shut it down during the heat of summer. If such a valve exists, it could be in the closed position. In addition to the above good answer, the thermostat may be installed upside down. Spring goes toward the engine block. ______answer---- All of the above are good answers, on my 92 Corsica there is a heater door controlled by a vac switch. If the switch is bad it will not allow heated air to the cars interior, it's unusual but there is no inline valve on the heater hose it's self.

2001 Chrysler voyager blower motor is making a growling sound and won't blow unless the car gets up to a fast speed Is the blower motor going out?

It sounds like the bearing is going bad and the motor only runs quite slowly when it's "growling". If you could get to the bearings you might be able to lubricate them and get more life out of the blower, but it's generally not considered practical since blower motors are generally quite reasonably priced. The worst part may be figuring out how to remove/replace the motor.

What causes a night heater to blow cold air?

Low coolant, bad coolant, blockage in the coolant line, bad heater core or element, bad thermostat

What is wrong with the heater controls on a 91 Buick Regal when the heater controls wont switch to defrost vent etc even when the lights on the buttons iluminate?

Many of these controls are Vacuum operated. You may have a problem where the "Main" Vacuum line has broken. See if you can locate this line by using your manual and make sure that it is intact. TommyTrouble

How do i fix my 1997 jeep defrost vent All the other functions work but i cannot get the air to come out my windshield defrost vent.?

The acturators that control the defrost and vents often become inopterave because the mechanical link from the acturator to the divertors breaks. You can see if this is the porblem by looking just to the right and above the gas pedel. I have just tryed adding a screw and some glue to see if that works. The only problem is, that I had to remove the entire dash to get to the diverters and acturators. About 4 hours so far. But I am a shade tree machamic.

How do you flush a heater core?

Disconnect both heater hoses from the heater or the engine, whichever is easier. Fabricate fittings to attach a garden hose to one of the heater connections. I direct the other heater connection into a bucket. Turn on the garden hose gradually until all the way open. Flush for 30 seconds. Reverse heater connections and back flush another 30 seconds. Reinstall heater hoses, top off radiator coolant reservoir. Done.

Why is there no air blowing from the heater from a 2002 mercury sable there is just a clicking noise?

Sounds like the blower motor has seized up - time to replace it.

Why does the heater in a 1986 Cadillac ElDorado blow cold air when there is good circulation?

You need to clean or change your heater core Also check your rad cap to be sure that it holds the pressure change it every 2 years minimum

Would it be ignorant to use a Coleman Golf Cart Heater in a car without a heater?

It would be not advisable to do unless you leave the windows open because of carbine monoxide poisoning. most golf carts are open. If you want heat of this kind it is just as easy to run a hose from your tail pipe and I wouldn't advise you to do either.

Why does Heat enter car when heater switch is off?

If you find your self living anywhere where it gets pretty hot in the summer, you'll want to know what locals know about summer car safety. Having the right items--and never having the wrong items--in your vehicle will make driving in the heat a much safer and enjoyable experience.

If you ever park outside during the summer months, your car will heat up quickly. Heat coming in through the windows is absorbed by the interior, and the glass acts as an insulator. The temperature in your car get up to 200 degrees, depending on the temperature outside, the kind of vehicle you have, and how long it has been in the sun.

Now we know how the sun works. Some cars have flow through ventilation, there is air movement all the time. You can move the temperature to cold and just the outside air will go through. The door that shuts the heater off may not be sealing completely. Either the seal is bad or the control valve isn't closing it completely. Some cars have less insulation in the floor and it may be radiant heat.

How do you repair a 2003 grand Cherokee dual climate control that blows hot on one side and cold on the other?

You would think that a company such as Chrysler would be able to build something that at least made a tiny bit of sense.......but NO.... If you want to fix something as simple as HOT AIR in the car you have to take the whole car apart.

So, now that I've vented here is the website that will answer your question (and cause you to wonder why you bought a jeep in the first place) Go ahead, bang your head on the driveway......but this is the true stuff:

What would be the reason for the heat to not blow on a 97 mercury villager?

Low coolant? Bad thermostat? Heater core restricted, plugged or airbound? Temperature control not working? Water pump not circulating coolant?

94 Honda accord heater doesn't work just blows cold?

You may have a stopped up heater core, or it may be a faulty heater door or heater door control. Answer: Check coolant level. Replace thermostat. Check heater control cable, located under small cover above the the passenger floorboard, near the console.

What are the proper steps needed to troubleshoot and fix a problem of no heat in a climate controlled 1995 Buick Roadmaster that starts and runs fine but only blows cold air?

First of all if the engine starts and does get warmed up check to see that the upper hose is nice and hot. If NOT then check your thermostat as it may be open. If the engine is hot then check the two heater hoses that go to the firewall. They should be hot also. That is BOTH should be hot unless it uses a valve to close one hose. If it does you will note that. If both hoses are HOT then you KNOW you have hot coolant traveling through the heater core. Now also remember that you do this check in about 5 minutes after the engine has fully warmed up. I say this as if you wait too long..its entirely possible that your heater core is plugged up and it is merely trasfering heat through the core structure. IF both hoses are HOT your issue is with the blend door and how its controlled. If its climate controlled then the door is probably controlled by a motor or vacuum motor. You would have to check the schematic to see exactly HOW its done. As I said..if the core is flowing hot coolant then your only issue is controlling the temp. Also I might add that make sure your AC compressor is NOT working when the controller is on the heat mode. If it is its possible your AC is cooling the heat...that you want!

Will a bad heater core cause the car not to start?

No it wont. The heater core is just a small radiator inside the cabin that when the fan is turned on heats the air. A bad heater core will cause you to have no heat inside or will leak coolant on the carpet.

Why will the ice on a windscreen disappear as you drive along even without the heater on?

It would greatly depend on the ambient temperature and the humidity of the atmosphere you are driving though.

When you turn the heater or air conditioner on the higher you turn it up the more is has a rattling sound Do you need to replace something?

i think you have something stuck in the blower motor. these are normally fairly easy to get out but i dont know what kind of vehicle you have. just pull out the blower motor and get the leaves out.
