Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

What causes a 2000 Tacoma 4 x 4 manual to sometimes not turn over and just click multiple times before starting just fine?

== == This is a common problem with Toyota trucks and SUV's. The starter motor contacts are worn. Repair does not require an expensive starter replacement by your local overcharging mechanic, if you are handy with tools. Remove your starter and disassemble it to remove the contacts. You will need to get a starter rebuild kit, commonly available on eBay for about $25, or visit your Toyota dealer's parts department with starter contacts in hand to get the right parts. Shouldn't take more than a few hours to R&R the starter and replace the contacts.

Dear Tacoma owner, Your problem is related to starter motor antiquity; it's time for a new one! At certain times, and more and more frequently as your starter's ultimate demise looms large, the heavy duty switch at the solenoid fails to transmit adequate battery amperage to drive (or spin) the unit. This switch wears due to the difficult task it has to perform, every time you turn the ignition key to "crank" position; creating an electrical bridge between a high power cell and an appliance. This bridging is a little bit like welding, inside the starter, for a brief period of time. In your case, sometimes the power gets through to spin the motor; sometimes it doesn't. The condition will continue to get worse, and probably quickly too. If left unrepaired, you'll find yourself stranded, turning the key over and over, but to no avail. Replace the starter. Use a genuine Toyota remanufactured unit if you plan to maintain ownership of the truck yourself. They are more costly, but will last almost as long as the original one did. Aftermarket units generally present with premature wear symptoms after a couple of years. These are solid vehicles. Maintain it well! Over I would suspect corroded or loose wiring. Clean the battery post and clamps, and check all the wiring to the starter for tightness. Can also be the starter solenoid going bad.

1978 20R engine won't turn over it will crank but not start What could be wrong?

Always start with the basics. Do you have fuel? Is there some fuel in the carburettor? Do you have spark? Is it 'in time'?

Start by checking for spark. Remove one spark plug and place back into the spark plug wire boot. Place the electrode on a good ground (basically, any clean metal spot on the engine) and try to keep it from moving. DO NOT HOLD THE SPARK PLUG OR WIRE! The voltage and amperage is definitely enough to kill you. Make sure you have placed the spark plug in a good visible location with not too much light so that you can easily view it from the car while you cranking the engine. Another person does help quite a bit. Crank the engine. Can you see a good blue spark? If you can, replace the plug and move on to fuel.

After verifying there is fuel in the tank, check the carburettor. If you look down the body and open the throttle, do you see and smell gas? If so, move on to timing. If not, check the fuel pump and delivery system for problems.

On the bottom engine pulley there is a series of marks and a single mark on the pulley (harmonic balancer) itself. If you can't see the single mark, turn the engine over by placing a large socket wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt and, turning clockwise, rotate the engine until the single mark is close to the 0 indicator on the timing plate. These are hard to see on older engines. Once these to marks line up, make not of the number one cylinder spark plug wire (the first cylinder up front) and carefully remove the distributor cap. If the rotor under the cap is pointing at the number one cylinder spark plug wire, you should be ok. If not, it's time for, well, new timing. Check the timing assembly for failed parts and replace.

Answer

I forgot to install a power valve on my carb and this left a half inch hole in the metering block. This caused my engine to majorly flood. Fuel filled at least one cylinder and the engine become hydrolocked and the engine wouldn't turn over enough to notice-maybe one degree each time I turned the key. I burned up my starter and had to drain gas out of my oil pan. Even if you're not messing with power valves (they're not even an option on edelbrock carbs) a rich fuel mixture could allow excessive fuel to build up and pass through the cylinder rings and taint your oil so check your plugs for dampness or black conditions every so often.

An increasingly noisy ticking sound coming from your engine could indicate a lifter malfunction. I once had an exhaust valve lifter 'mushroom' where the cam makes contact with the flat end and the lifter wouldn't move up & down smoothly. This kept the exhaust valve from letting out the unspent fuel through the exhaust and the fuel had only one place to go: pass the rings & into the oil.

Car won't start after sitting overnight but battery is new?

When you say it won't start I am assuming you mean it will not turn over. If that is the case and the battery is new, then something is pulling power from the battery. You have a light somewhere that is on or you have a relay that is stuck.

Why does your Nissan cabstar turn over but wont start?

check the distributer or change the spark plug wires and spark plugs this happened to my try changing the moguel

1997 Chevy blazer won't start after it rains what is the problem?

Ignition control module.. located under the distributor

The distributor cap is probably cracked and moisture is getting into it. Replace the cap .

How does a chipped ignition key go bad it then sets off anti theft system and car wont start?

Because there are tumblers in the lock where you put the key in. When you put the right key in, all the tumblers are put in the right place and all the sensors are then turned off so the car will start. When all the tumblers are not put in the right position due to a bad key, the sensors stay on so when you turn the key, the cr won't start and the antitheft alarm goes off

Need wiring diagram for a 1988 Ford Ranger?

You can find a wiring diagram for your truck online. Autozone.com gives you access to free online repair manuals. You just enter your vehicle information and log on and you can use them anytime.

Try again!! Nope you c-AIN'T!!

Just put in a request for a Factory Radio Wiring Diagram Schematic for a 1988 Ford Ranger XLT and the result was "sorry - results not found". That's ok though, I'll find it somewhere on this crazy "world wide web" and I do appreciate the advice. Just had to add some to it myself, it's probably only good for 1990 or 1995 to current. Have a Great Day Now, ya' har'!!! Red Neck White Girl !!!

How much is a starter?

The price varies depending on the vehicle. Call your local parts store and get a price quote.

What would make a 1993 geo prisim just die and not start cranks but wont start?

If an engine has:

* compression * fuel * ignition spark

delivered in the right quantities and at the right time while the engine is being "cranked" by the starter motor, it will start. Your problem now is to find out which isn't working right.

I always suggest starting fluid to help isolate the problem

What can be wrong with a 1997 Nissan sentra when you put a new battery alternator starter sparkplugs and starter solinoid in and it wont start all you get is a clicking noise and everything else works?

The problem could be in the steering column. Sometimes the pins holding the wiring harness come loose and this stops the connection. Take the cover, from around the column, off. Four phillip head screws hold it together. The screws are located on the bottom of the cover. Pull the top cover off and check the harness. If the pins are loose, take a hammer and tap the Phillips screwdriver on the top of the pins until they tighten up. Hope this works.

I have a 95 Pontiac grand am and the engine will turn over but wont start it sounds like its out of time but it is mechanically driven?

Please describe "sounds like its out of time" without using the word "like". Your description is ambiguous. "Out of time" can mean more than one thing and can have several types of "sounds."

Please specify engine size.

I Have a 90 Chevy Suburban wont start will only turn over what could be the problem have not had any problems with it before?

Because of the little information you gave us, we can't tell you what's wrong. I recommend taking it to a mechanic, not Wiki Answers.

You have 1992 dodge caravan 3 liter V-6 and you have no spark and you changed the coils park plugs wires and the distributor cap and still no spark?

Double check the ground. Make sure that the negative terminal on the battery is clean and tight and that the ground onto the engine is not corroded. Now make sure that the coil is getting proper power. Is power coming out of the coil and into the distributor. Remove the distributor cap and rotor and look for any signs of arcing (burned spots) under the rotor. Is the electronic ignition burned out? Use a multi-meter to check the circuits here. Does electricity pass through?

Why car tries to start without key in ignition?

Check your wiring, also the connections on the starting motor.

Your 2001 PT Crusiser wont start Just clicks once?

A single click when you try to start the vehicle usually indicates a corroded/loose battery cable or a faulty starter solenoid/relay switch.

Why does your car stalls when raining?

The "venturi effect", a principle used by carburetors, causes a decrease in pressure where the fuel is drawn into the air stream. The pressure decrease can result in ice formation, which seriously affects the way the carburetor functions, and can result in stalling. Throttle body injection is also prone to this problem.

It's more common during rain because of the relatively cool temperature and the high humidity level in the air that's going into the carburetor.

New "production" vehicles have a carburetor de-icing that can pre-heat the air under conditions that may cause ice buildup.

Why does a 93 Caprice engine seem like the fuel shuts off at times and run great other times?

My 93 Caprice started with a significant hesitation, that eventually morphed into a no run condition. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor, ignition module, ignition coil, fuel pump and fuel filter all to no avail. I had to have the car towed into a repair facility where they diagnosed the problem as a faulty pickup coil (located on the distributor shaft below the plate where the ignition module mounts. The car hasn't quit running since. Good Luck! Start with the fuel filter, either on the firewall or in the fuel line under the car. Do you have water in the gas? Are your injectors clean? Are your air filter, PVC valve clean? A lot more info required here. try the map sensor , it can be a vaccuum leak and not the fuel at all . If this doesn't solve the problem you should try the control module . Most modules when bad seem like the fuel is cutting off when actually it is the spark . The in-line fuel filter under the driver's side of the car may be dirty or clogged. Be careful replacing it b/c it spurts gasoline for a couple seconds. Keep track of the fuel guage also, if it is less than half (usually a quarter tank) and this symtom occurs, the fuel pickup in the fuel tank can be off by this much and the fuel will slosh in the tank and not stay under the pickup hence the cutoff of fuel symptom. Occurs on hard left corners when all the fuel flows to right, due to pickup orientation. The in tank baffle can break (there glued on the plastic ones)and cause this also. The harder the left, the more the cut off of fuel to the point of stalling the motor. Replacing the fuel pump and sender and/or fuel tank would be the cure if this proved to be the reason. I also keep my 91 at least half full of gas because of the known issue of poor baffleing on the stock plastic tanks, guess they never figured anyone was gonna put a performance suspension and 450 HP in one eh... lol One other thing needs to be considered with this type of problem is that after about 75,000 miles the throttle body develops a fairly significant carbon build up. You can clean it yourself or a Chevy dealer will clean it for under $200. If you choose to clean it yourself I recommend you spend some time at a junkyard and practice on one of their cars so you have an idea of what you are getting into. VBD Could be an electrical connection. I though my problem was fuel oriented too, but worked great when I fixed a similar sounding problem by replacing the distributor cap/rotar. Ran great and smooth afterwards. Startup better too.

Why won't a 1989 Jeep Cherokee keep running unless the key is kept turned to the start position?

you have a short or disconnected wire in the switch. you may need to replace your ignition switch. i have a 89 jeep and it was doin the same thing: it was the ignition module If one of the wires gets disconnected from the ballast resistor it will do the same thing.
