Take it to a shop to have a diagnostic plugged into it. 9 times out of 10 its simply an oxygen sensor that has gone bad. When the diagnostic is complete it will tell you exactly why the check engine light is lit. Try to do this as soon as possible because it is affecting the miles per gallon in your vehicle.
How do you turn off the maintenance service light on a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup?
you take it to a shop and have maintenance done on it, no I'm not being a smart alek either. its pretty much telling you that its probloby time for a tune up, depending if you've gone at least 60k miles on it. If your not up to 60k miles, there is more then likely something wrong with your oxygen sensor or otherwise. Check around who will do free computer checks on your vehicle, they will run a quick scan and see what the prb is.
Two separate problems; the bogging is probably due to the #1 problem with today's cars : a weak fuel pump/plugged fuel filter. Get that fixed first. You may have a weak clutch slave cylinder which causes hard shifting.
Why would the service engine soon light come on in a 94 cutlass supreme?
If flashing - emergency conditions - do not drive without talking with service first. Could be loss of oil pressure.
If solid, important but not critical. Could be something as simple as a loose gas cap.
How many miles does your vehicle have on it. Check your owners manual or look online to see what the recommended service schedule is for your car. Most check engine lights are set by the factory to come on when a certain milage is reached. It may also be an indication that problems may exist with the engine and it is giving you an early warning. I would base it on mileage and how often have you kept up with regular servicing on the car.
THOUGH THE ABOVE COULD BE TRUE IF YOU HAVE AN AUTO ZONE WHERE YOU ARE LOCATED YOU CAN TAKE THE CAR TO THEM AND FOR FREE THEY CAN PULL THE CODES FROM IT USING A HAND HELD COMPUTER THING, I HAD TO HAVE IT DONE ON MY 94 CUTLASS SUPREME AND IT SAYS I NEED TO REPLACE THE CAMSHAFT CENSOR WHICH IS A FAIRLY INEXPENSIVE PART TO BUT BUT YOU HAVE TO ROTATE THE ENGINE TO REPLACE IT SO UNLESS YOU KNOW OR ARE A GOOD MECHANIC YOU'D BE BETTER OFF TAKING IT TO A BUSINESS MECHANIC TO HAVE IT REPLACED UNLESS IF YOU HAVE THE CODES PULLED AND IT IS SOMETHING ELSE. ANYWAYS GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE I WAS ABLE TO HELP YOU A LIL BIT.
It could mean a ton of things. If it flashes, a misfire is occuring, if its just steady, you need to take it to a car parts store and have them pull the error codes out for you, and then they can tell you what your computer says is wrong.
All good answers above, especially the one about autozone. The computer on any car uses this light to let the driver know that something is "wrong." It could be "anything." Autozone will test "if" that is where you are going to get the parts needed. It could be as simple as an oil change to needing an overhaul but the light is there to let you know that one day the car is not going to be there to get you anywhere, "if" you neglect the warning.
How can you turn the service engine soon light off?
you can reset your lights by taking the terminals off your battery leave for 3mins then put back on it should reset it if it comes on again pursue the problem with your mechanic
my $.02Service engine soon is somtimes interchangable with the check engine light, but not always. The " check engine light" is by far one of the most misunderstood technological advances It is a warning light that is illuminated when there is a problem affecting the EMISSIONS of the vehicle.. Don't let it bother you as it is a good thing once you understand it. One point that was brought up a recent meeting of technicians was that the amount of hydrocarbons is greater when the gas cap is left off than when the engine is running. Hydrocarbons are part of pollution emitted as gasoline evaporates. Going a step farther, one facet of the emission system is the "Evaporative" portion. This is when the fumes from the gasoline are leaking from the system into the outside air. This is one part of the emission system that can trigger a check engine light. I would say a small percentage of the vehicles that have a check engine light are the result of a loose or inadequate gas cap. But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have multiple computers aside from the powertain computer) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they are different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests or monitors are not run until preceding ones have run successfully. So if there is a problem in one particular area that is preventing another self test from running, you can have a situation where one problem is fixed, but another still exists. If you fix a problem and drive the car through a drive cycle that sets the monitor (or self test) the light will go off as it passes that criteria that triggered it in the first place. There are many different sources for the light to come on. Anything that caused combustion to fail, commonly called a misfire will set the light. Various sensors such as oxygen sensors that evaluate the exhaust before and after the gases are burned in the converter. Transmission codes may set the check engine light to appear. If the car is running okay, get it fixed in a reasonable amount of time such as within the month. It will probably save you fuel if you do. However if the Check engine light is flashing, you should be driving it as damage is being done to the converter. Some emission components are covered beyond the standard warranty. The converter for example is covered up to 80,000 miles by the manufacturer. After 1996, the auto industry went to a idea called OBD II (on board diagnostics). This was to get all the manufacturers onto a similar plane for troubleshooting and powertrain control. While they still differ, many corrections and adaptations were made for technicians to better fix the check engine light problems. Prior to this there were so many different and poor troubleshooting data from a check engine light problem that resolving the problem was much more difficult. Many early warning light of this nature were set to illuminate based on mileage. An Oxygen sensor was one of the things that were meant to be replaced when that mileage was hit. This is much like many current "Change oil lights that are set based on a pre-set mileage. To start testing for the check engine light, youll need to find the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self tests the computer runs the car through a drive cycle, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. There are self-tests for the oxygen sensor circuit, egr system, evaporative system to name a few. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related.
OR hook up a scanner that is capable of clearing codes, and hope that it wont come back on. But dont bet on it. Lastly, disconnecting the battery in some cars will clear the memory of the computer and may temporarily turn the light off. Beware that this may also cause other problems such as the car not rembering its idle and will have to relearn it, the radio may be rendered inoperative or in the case of the new Toyotas, the air bag can blow.
Your service engine light soon came on 1994 camaro?
The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to AutoZone or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.

SOMETIMES a Lazy O2 sensor(oxygen sensor) will turn on a check engine & then go OFF - but SOMETIMES it will SET a Hard Code.U need 2 check the History of codes in the Computer It could be the Thermostat. I had a firebird that had the same problem. Turns out the thermostat was too cold. There is a problem that is affecting the emissions system. There are a multitude of possiblities as to why is comes on and goes off. Whatever is happening isn't consistent and until it is, I wouldn't worry about it. I would make sure that the car is tuned up however and other maintnence is current. See "What maintenance should an Owner do?"

How to reset check engine light on Scion tc?
Every 5,000 miles, a "Maintenance Required" light will blink for the first couple seconds after you start your car. It will continue to do so until it is reset. If it is not reset, than it will eventually turn on your "Check Engine" light. The purpose of the maintenance required light is to remind TC owners to change their oil. The factory recommended interval is 5,000 miles, but you can reduce the interval the light will come on to a mileage interval of your choice.
1. Before starting, make sure that the odometer is not on one of the trip mileage odometers but is displaying the standard odometer.
2. With the car off, press and hold down the odometer reset button. While still holding it, start the car.
3. The light should continue to blink for a couple seconds and than disappear. That will reset the light for another 5,000 miles.
4. The following are steps to change the interval in which the maintenance required light comes on. Right after you turn on the ignition while holding the reset button, you'll notice that the odometer display will show 5 bars. Each bar corresponds to a 1,000 miles. As each bar disappears, the interval will increase (0 bars = 5k, 1 bar = 4k). Release the reset button at the interval you desire.

What should you check when the check engine light comes on?
The "Check Engine" light, or "Malfunction Indicator Lamp" in modern cars is activated when a fault is detected in the fuel delivery, combustion, or exhaust emission system of your car. Sometimes, the cause of the fault will 'go away', and the light will go out on its own. There is very little that is 'owner-diagnosable' about an MIL light, without the correct scanning and diagnostic tools at a qualified mechanic shop. Every car is different, but usually things like low oil pressure or a busted headlamp will not set off the "check engine" light.
