Time for a smog check? ;) Regardless, first, check to see if your gas cap is on tight. If you keep you tank fairly low filled (can't blame you what with gas prices) splurge and fill it up, and tighten the cap. Drive around to build up the pressue in the tank (fumes and such) Many times on newer cars that will do it. BUT if not, either take off the positive cable to your battery and let the car sit 15 minutes (over night if possible) that should fix the problem. BUT if there is a repair issue with your car this 'fix' won't last but a few days and if you are thinking of a smog check, do it just before. Now also you can remove the ECM and PCM fuses and that will clear the codes. Or if you want to check to see what might need repairing go to a Pep Boys or call around and ask if a Car Parts store will do a code check and write down the codes that come up or the guys at the shop/store may loan you the book to look up the codes. But using the code reader can be used to clear the codes (can't say stores/garages will do this, but some will) they also can be purchased. Just some tips. I have a 2003 S-10 Xtreme and had the engine light come up and it turned out to be the loose gas cap situation. Filled up drove around and poof! light was off.
The main reason that a speedometer and odometer will stop is because the speed sensor, located on the back top area of the transmission, has gone faulty. The part can be had very easily at any auto parts store, or junkyard. The reason the check engine light is on is because the speed sensor signal goes thru the ECM (computer) for the car to run the different things. If the signal is intermitent, or interupted, the light is set, as well as the speedo and odometer not working.
Another reason is that the ECM it's self is bad, you can locate the ECM behind the glovebox and give it a few knocks while the car is running, if your engine responds by cutting out (even just a little) then replace it. they are around $110.
Since there is no speedo cable, it must be an electrical issue with a sensor.

The reason I ask, is, when I first got my 1986 Celebrity, the speedometer and odometer did not work. The previous owner had bought a new speed sensor, but had not had it put in yet. I installed it first thing. no luck. In checking the speedometer cable, I found it was broken, (the end of the cable at the tans-axle). After I replaced the speedometer cable, it worked fine.
Now, I cannot imaging gm did away with speedometer cables in the two years before the 1988 came out. I do have a 1990 S-15 with digital gauges, and I know it does not have a speedometer cable. But, the 1990 Sunbird I used to own, with analog gauges, did have one.

I used to drive mine over 500 miles from DC to Columbia SC and it would idle high once I finally stopped. A guy did something to the throttle to loosen it but....the solution is the idle air control valve. Its right in front of the windshield wiper fluid. Its as easy as replacing the TPS which is two bolts holding it on but make sure you get the right TPS and a Motorcraft idle air control with gaskets. If you dont you might have the same issues again. Easy to replace if you have a socket wrench.

- Use the BC Button (on indicator stalk) to scroll through to the relevant symbol - eg Oil Reset or Rear Brakes
- To Reset the warning indicator light - Press & Hold the BC Button at the revelant symbol until RESET appears - then press and hold again until the process is complete.
- Turn Off and On the Ignition again - Warning should now have gone!
