When you disconnct the battery, you are going to have to reset a number of functions that have been stored by your computer. The better way to go is to purchase or borrow an OBD II Scanner or reader. This allows you to see what the trouble code is at the same time being able to reset the service light. By the way, these scanners are relatively inexpensive and it's an excellent tool to own. The scanner has a simple one-plug attachment and it fits into the scan port under the left-hand side of your dash. It walks you through each of the steps required. I had the same problem on my 2005 Explorer and by using the scanner, I was able to shut my light off in a matter of two minutes.

if it is OBDII hook it up to the tester which can be done for free at advanced auto parts.

Advance auto parts in my area will no longer clear codes for you.

I am answering my own question.Finally! I took my Infiniti Q45 (1994) to a mechanic who listened to my concerns. I told him that my car stalls when attempting to excellerate, the check engine light would come on, and that the vehicle would sometimes completely shut down. The mechanic told me to take the vehicle to a shop to have the fuel injectors cleaned.This cost me $79.99 at Sears auto center. I also changed my air filter.This cost an additional $30. MY CAR RUNS GREAT AGAIN! (The dealership said that it sounds like the fuel pump was getting ready to go up. it was whinning.This would have cost me around $900). My Q45 0f 10 years ownership runs almost as it did when I first purchased it!

Go to Autozone and have them do a free check engine diagnostic. My 1999 had that problem. It is probably an EGR valve problem. Its a simple fix and helps with fuel efficency.

there is a thing called a code, which is in the trucks computer that tells it that there is a problem in the enginge, a couple of things to do is erase the code with a computer scan tool (most mechanics will have one) or it might work to disconnect the battery for at least 15min and that should clear all codes. TO KEEP IT FROM COMMING BACK YOU MUST FIRST FIX THE PROBLEM.

The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to AutoZone or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.

Have vehicle scanned to determine the problem. That is if the check engine light is on. If it isn't on you should check your distributor cap and rotor. Make sure your spark plugs are gapped and still in good shape and torque them when you screw them back in. Check the spark plug wires for white deposits and spray water on them and check to see if there are sparks coming off them when the car is on and the wires are wet. If there are, then you should change the wires. Change the fuel filter, if the filter is clogged then you will not have enough fuel going to your cylinders. Get fuel injector cleaner because if your fuel injectors are clogged you will not get enough fuel into your cylinders also. Make sure its not your catalytic converter or O2 sensors. If it is any of these, it will come up as a check engine light. Oh yeah, check your PCV valve as well.

THE OIL LIGHT WILL COME ON WHEN THERE ISNT ANY OIL PRESSURE SO MANY PEOPLE THINK IT COMES ON WHEN YOU HAVE NO OIL ALTHOUGH HAVING NO OIL ON THE DIP STICK MAY CAUSE A LIGHT USUALLY IT IS THE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR WHICH IS LOCATED NEAR THE DISTRIBUTOR ON THE BACK OF THE ENGINE IT IS A REAL B***H TO SEE.
