P0300 Diagnostic Code - Random Misfire

Symptoms.
Engine may stumble or miss
Engine may be hard to start
you may notice no issues

Cause
Failing spark plugs or spark plug wires
Bad coil or coil pack
Failing oxygen sensor(s)
Bad fuel injector or more than one
Stuck exhaust valve
Bad catalytic converter
EGR valve or valve passage clogging
Bad camshaft position sensor
Bad PCM or ECM

The Fix
Best first action is a tune up, new plugs, wires, inspect all hoses and wire connections then reset the code. If it returns you will need to narrow it down to a system, coils and coil packs should be tested, catalytic converters for function ( do you smell rotten eggs?). A misfire that jumps cylinders could indicate a lean condition, do you have any other codes along with the 300? this will help clue you in to the source, check valve function to make sure they are opening and closing fully.
This is probably pone of the most difficult codes to troubleshoot, so start with the basics and work your way into the more expensive options, in many cases a good old tune up solves the problem, back it up with a fuel system cleaning and see where you stand.

The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to a parts store or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.

No. The Check Engine Light is on because there is a problem with the emissions system. The only way that the octane fuel you are using could possibly cause the light to come on is if your car requires the use of premium fuel and you were using regular, but this is highly unlikely. Have the ECU scanned to retrieve the code which will tell you what part is being effected. Most auto parts stores will scan your car for free.

In the units computer an algorithm is in operation looking at hours of engine operation, engine temperatures, speeds etc. From the sensor inputs the system calculates when to tell you to change the oil. The frequency of service depends on how many short trips are taken versus long trips and other combined sensor inputs. Once the car is serviced, turn the key on (do NOT start the engine), depress the gas pedal to the floor three times and the computer will be reset. If the light does not reset, repeat the procedure. Again do not start the engine as flooring the accelerator will race the engine and damage could occur.

Not so much an answer, but wanted to say that I recently bought a used 2004 Ody, and it does the exact same thing, and there are no problems with the vehicle. Could just be part of the start-up behavior. If this is a NEW behavior, then I'd be more concerned.

It is a fault with the circuit that controls the vent for evaporative emission systems vapor. The problem could be a faulty vent valve, faulty wiring going to the vent valve, or a bad computer.

With an OBD2 scan tool. Resetting the light will do no good unless you repair the problem that triggered the light in the first place. It will just come back on.

With the ignition off, hold the two up and down buttons on the trip computer. Turn the ignition on, a message will flash for service reset, release the buttons. Hold the set button in for a few seconds, it will beep and acknowledge the reset. Turn the car off.

It is staying on because there is a problem with the SRS (Air Bags). Due to the hazards of working on this system this is not a DIY repair. Seek professional help.

First you buy, borrow, or xxxxx the manual and look-up how to read the codes. Usually it involves using a paperclip or jumper wire to jump 2 terminals on the DLC (data link connector) and turning the key to the on position(not starting it) and then counting the flashes of the check engine light.

This also depends on what OBD connector is under the dash.....some use the 5 and 6 pin (doesnt work but according to haynes is a way to get codes from the OBD2 style found in 1995) some the A-B (OBD1 style) work and work well.

have the dealership take a look at it, tell you what the problem is! Once you know what the problem is go back to your cheaper mecanic and let him know what it is. Ask for a discount as he himself was unable to diagnose the problem,or considering in some states the dealership will charge a price just to check it out!! The trained tech at a Mitsubishi dealer/repair center will fix it right the first time..

The oxygen sensor(s) , 1 on the exhaust manifold and 1 on the catylitic convertor commonly go bad causing the ses light to come on, Makes them had to start also.
