Switching out plugs and wires isn't going to do a whole lot if your losing power, it may stop an engine from misfiring or help it to be more efficient on fuel consumption but losing power, no. It could be the fuel filter if it loses power when you have over a 1/2 tank of gas. Otherwise, it could be your fuel pump, which is in the gas tank to keep it cool. Go to any of your local auto stores and have them hook up a diagnostic reader to your computer system--they will do it at no cost to you and see if it reads out a (bad throttle position sensor) or something else.

have you tryed to disconnect the battery cables it would be the positive one it reprograms the wireing.

try unhooking positive side of battery it works on my 96 tercel if it comes back on something really is wrong

Code 34 is MAP/EGR code. Take your EGR valve off and clean it VERY WELL with carb cleaner. Take battery cable off for 5min and depress brake pedal to kill power to the system. If the light comes back on within a few miles, then you need a new MAP sensor which is about $40.

remove neg. battery cable for 10 min. and reconnect. that should reset the light.

If it is a U.S. car then it is an OBDII compliant vehicle and the codes can be read with an OBDII scan tool.

There are actually a few different possible issues and possible solutions.

1. Never power down the car while still in drive. (its seems like a given but the car is so quiet, people do it often) That will confuse the computer system and make you restart the car to power down correctly.

2. Do not carry your keys in the same pocket as a cell phone, work key card, credit card, or something that gives off a radio frequency.

3. If this happens when you try to lock the car, hit the lock button for 3 seconds AS YOU WALK AWAY from the car.

4. The most likely answer is that you need a new battery for the key pad.

5. Could be the antenna in the remote.

There are literally hundreds of things that can turn the check engine light on. You need to have the system checked for codes to know what to diagnose.

And sometimes it might be an error with electronics. My moms engine light ha been on since 2008 winter. When she asked omeone to look at it nothing was wrong.

Your implication that our Foresters have one irritating check engine light echoes what I was thinking on my way to work this morning. Mine wants a new catalytic converter, and so far it only does this when the weather gets cold. My last was an Outback that suckered me into buying converters twice before I gave up on it. But this doesn't answer your question.

Four ways. (1) and best: fix the problem. (2) cheap but temporary: disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. (3) Get a code reader that will read the code and give you the option of erasing it, thus shutting the light off until it sets the code again. (4) take the bulb out or put black tape over the check engine light.

I wouldn't feel good about disabling the check engine light because if something else goes wrong you won't be notified.
