What else could be wrong if a car loses speed and check engine light comes on even after spark plugs and wires have been changed?

Switching out plugs and wires isn't going to do a whole lot if your losing power, it may stop an engine from misfiring or help it to be more efficient on fuel consumption but losing power, no. It could be the fuel filter if it loses power when you have over a 1/2 tank of gas. Otherwise, it could be your fuel pump, which is in the gas tank to keep it cool. Go to any of your local auto stores and have them hook up a diagnostic reader to your computer system--they will do it at no cost to you and see if it reads out a (bad throttle position sensor) or something else.

When I start my 2008 Camry Hybrid the Key is not Detected light comes on when the key is in my pocket and won't go off unless I restart the engine How do I stop this?

There are actually a few different possible issues and possible solutions.

1. Never power down the car while still in drive. (its seems like a given but the car is so quiet, people do it often) That will confuse the computer system and make you restart the car to power down correctly.

2. Do not carry your keys in the same pocket as a cell phone, work key card, credit card, or something that gives off a radio frequency.

3. If this happens when you try to lock the car, hit the lock button for 3 seconds AS YOU WALK AWAY from the car.

4. The most likely answer is that you need a new battery for the key pad.

5. Could be the antenna in the remote.

Hope this helps...

Have you connected to a diagnostic code scanner?

The computer turns on the "check engine" light to tell you that a problem exists. Sometimes, however, it doesn't turn on the light when it detects a problem. Either way, a code scanner is the preferred way of figuring out what's wrong.

You can borrow, rent or buy code scanners at most auto parts retailers, and many will even help you connect the scanner and figure out what it's telling you.

Throwing parts at a problem is a waste of parts and typically doesn't solve the problem.

How do you shut off the check engine light in a 1998 Subaru Forester?

Your implication that our Foresters have one irritating check engine light echoes what I was thinking on my way to work this morning. Mine wants a new catalytic converter, and so far it only does this when the weather gets cold. My last was an Outback that suckered me into buying converters twice before I gave up on it. But this doesn't answer your question.

Four ways. (1) and best: fix the problem. (2) cheap but temporary: disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. (3) Get a code reader that will read the code and give you the option of erasing it, thus shutting the light off until it sets the code again. (4) take the bulb out or put black tape over the check engine light.

I wouldn't feel good about disabling the check engine light because if something else goes wrong you won't be notified.

Good luck.

If a 1995 Toyota Corolla check engine light has come on and the OBD is giving an error code 71 - EGR system how do you diagnose and repair this problem?

My Toyota manual for a 1991 Corolla DX says that error code #71 is used only for California specifications. Here is the official diagnosis, according to the manual: the EGR gas temperature sensor signal (THG) is below the total temperature of the intake air temperature plus 55 deg Cent. (99 degrees F) after driving for 25 seconds in EGR operation range. The manual then lists five trouble areas: 1- Open in EGR temperature sensor circuit; 2- Open in VSV circuit for EGR, 3- EGR vacuum hose disconnected, valve stuck; 4- Clogged in EGR gas passage; 5 - ECU.

Can faulty brakes cause check engine on subaru impressa?

The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to a parts store or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.
