Distributors and Distributor Caps

Distributors and distributor caps are components of an ignition system. Most internal combustion engines use these to deliver high voltage sparks into the engine in the correct firing order, which in turn creates combustion.

How do you replace the distributor cap and rotor on your 1989 Mercedes?

You don't. It has a D.I.S. ignition system and has no distributor or rotor. There are three coils mounted over spark plugs under coil pack cover (center top of motor) Each coil fires 2 pistons. They are not replaced as a tune up item. They are only replaced if faulty. Spark plugs should be replaced every 15,000 miles.

Where is Number one on the distributor cap locatedon 1971 Chevelle?

Usually to the left of the points window when looking at it from the side. That does NOT mean someone hasn't changed it though. Remember you're dealing with a 40 year old car. It doesn't actually matter which one it is. Set the engine to TDC for #1 and pull the cap and see which wire tower the rotor is point at. That's the number one on YOUR car. The easiest way to be sure you're not at #6 instead of #1 (180 degrees out) take off the driver side valve cover and watch the intake valve. When it closes, turn the crank until the timing mark is at zero. Now the engine is at TDC for #1.

What could cause a 1994 Ford Probe GT that has a new distributor still have no spark?

okay ! I have posted that it probly is the crank postioning sensor ford still makes things seem way more diffacult than they really are you cant find any specs for anything to make sure the part is bad or not one of the reason that ford is headed for the scrap pileIn my 94 Probe GT, I could get no spark out of my car, and found out that it was the distributor. Word of advise...spend the extra $ and let someone else put it on for you. I did mine myself twice, and both times, the seals came loose and water got in, causeing the motor to rev up and down while driving, and then cutting off at 2500 RPM. It was not good!

my recomendation is pull distributer cap and turn over the engine look to see that your rotor button is spinning, if its not spinning check you timing belt, but if it is spinning check on replacement of your coil pack and/or your entire distributer once all else fails...

My Timing belt is brand new and it is in perfect time...

THIS IS NOT AN ANSWER IT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE QUESTION

I bought the car after it had set for a year or so, put on new timing belt and water pump, car ran great for two days then suddenly when I hit 4500rpm my tach flip out and the car died. I checked for spark and got nothing. I double checked timingbelt, replaced the Crankshaft position sensor and the distributor.......I'm Lost

Have you tried resetting the Fuel Pump Cut Off switch in the left rear corner of your trunk? Is the "Fuel Cut-Off" lamp illumated on the dash when you try to start? This is a perplexing problem...seems like as the cars age and the distributors begin to wear down they send to much current to the immobilizer units in the cars(these trip the Fuel Cut-off Switch in the trunk). The excess current evidently erode or overheats the soldering on the chip board of the immobilizer unit, thus, triggering the fuel cut-off switch to activate.

All of that happening has eventually caused my probe to fail to start at all now...the fuel pump is not pumping and there is no spark being sent to the plugs...all a result of the immobilizer believing it has a problem.

The one other item it can be is a DOCUMENTED problem in Ford's Technical Service Bulletins where Ford admits there is a problem with corrosion on the wires for the immobilizer & fuel cut-off switch link.

I am in the middle of trying to fix mine. Good luck.

Hey buddy Why don,t u check your fuses take a ohm meter Check the resistance of Primary Wire or secondary wire. If there is no current in the primary wire that means there is problem with your Iginition relay change your relay u don,t need to reset your fuel system just change your relay that u can find when you wil pop the hood it should be green color. I think in Canadian it would cost u 106 try that hit me back

Ok I would say do a paperclip diagnostic on it it will throw you codes to check my probe threw me the code for my crank shaft postioning sensor and also could be the distributor could have a bad ignition module on it if the 94 is the same as the 93 which i think it is moisture gets in from teperature changes hot to cold ect... use a paperclip from your ten pin to your ground pin on your diagnostic block located by your battery hope this could help ive been thru it all with mine and found myself turning in distributor after distributor on warranty to fix my problem im still looking to find out if there is anyway to prevent the moisture from getting into the distributor

Why do the Distributor unit fails on 1995 Ford Probe GT?

There is a small ignition module (relay) that is built into the distributor that is notorious for burning up.....

Where is number 1 on the distributor cap of a 5.7 1989 Chevy 2500 pickup?

depends on which way your distributor cap is pointed. best thing to do if all spark plug wires are off is to get number 1 cylinder to top dead center. put number 1 spark plug wire on any spot on distributer cap and turn distributer until the post where you stuck number 1 spark plug wire on is as close to number 1 cylinder as possible or some would say pointed straight at it. thenstarting in a clockwise motion put plug wires on infiring order which should be cast into your intake manifold i think to the passenger side of carberator. this should get the timing close enough for the engine to start. then you should be able to start it and set the timing whick should be printed on a sticker on the frame that runs across the front of the engine compartment to the left of the hood latch i believe. make sure to set timing before running the engine very long you could damage it. this is just if all plug wires were off and you have no other way to know where they go

Complete spark plug wire diagram for a 1991 Honda civic hatch from the distributor to the engine?

When standing on the passanger side looking at the distributor the top right plug is cylinder one (the cylinder closest to the distributor). The top left plug on the distributor is cylinder two. The bottom left plug is cylinder three. Finally the bottom left plug is cylinder four (the cylinder furthest from the distributor, closest to the timing gear). Hope this helps.

How do cars shut off?

For those who don't know anything about ignition systems, heres a little insight on the subject: A basic ignition system consists of an ignition switch, ignition coil & distributor assembly or computer & coil packs, spark plug wires, and spark plugs. When the ignition switch is on, a 12 volt power supply runs to an ignition coil which amplifies the voltage to as high as 30,000 volts. The current then runs through a distributor assembly which directs and delivers the power supply in segments to the spark plugs through wires. The spark plugs "fire" which ignites the air/fuel mixture in the engines corresponding combustion chamber causing the reaction that produces the engines power. Vehicles with coil packs have the 12 volt power supply run through a computer which does the same thing as a distributor before sending the current through the coil packs and then to the spark plugs. When you turn off the vehicle, mechanical linkage running from the ignition key cylinder assembly separates two sections of the ignition switch that severs the 12 volt supply current to the rest of the vehicles ignition system, thereby disabling the ignition spark, stopping the combustion reactions, and stopping the engine.

What is the material of distributor cap?

Distributor caps were originally made of a material called "Bakelite". It was strong, hard a very high resistance to electrical arcing. Problem was, if they began to arc, carbon would build up and the spark from the points would scatter all over the inside of the cap making a car undriveable. Now materials are more like plastic or other durable material that will resist electrical power.

Where is the distributor cap on a 1995 Chevy Cavalier?

the cavaliers do not have a distributer cap, they have a coil pack. you can find by following the spark plug wire from the blockto the other end and there will be four wires connected to the pack.

What is the correct spark plug gap for a craftsman 21 inch lawnmower?

I was looking for the answer to this myself the other day. I have a Craftsman 22" mower. It seems that the majority of push mowers have the gap set to 0.030", whether it is a Craftsman or some other brand. BTW, you can probably find a PDF version of your owner's manual on the Sears Parts Direct website: www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action Soon after I determined that I was going to gap it at 0.030" I found my manual there. Don't order the hard copy but look a bit and there should be a link to the specific manual for your model in PDF form. I had to register my email address in order to be able to read it. Save it to a file on your computer and you'll always know where your manual is from now on. ;-)

Should the rotor move under distributor cap?

Well yes and no. It should more around in a circle when the engine is started. The rotor should not move except a hair with the engine off.

1988 Lincoln town car will turn over in park but won't start will start in neutral AND MOVES IN DRIVE but shuts off when put in reverse?

I would replace the neutral safety switch; Buy it from the Ford dealer where they can print out the picture of it along with its location. I hope this helps you. Mark

What could cause a 92 Chevy C1500 V6 4.3L not to fire if the engine is turning over and efi is working after new distributor cap and rotor has been installed?

Internal leakage on the spyder?

answercheck the firing order Turn the engine using a socket wrench on the large bolt on the front of the crankshaft pulley. Place a finger near the No. 1 spark plug hole and turn the crankshaft until the piston reaches Top Dead Center (TDC). As the engine approaches TDC, you will feel air being expelled by the No. 1 cylinder. If the position is not being met, turn the engine another full turn (360 degree). Once the engine's position is correct, install the spark plug. check the rotor location and start #1 plug wire where the rotor is pointing the firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2 and the distributer turns clockwise answerI doubt it's the order, because I have a '91 and the only I had with it fuel wise was a loose wire on top of the tank 'cause of the bumpy roads, I live in Hawaii so,anyway, so check that too. It also could be a clogged fuel filter or line like I said a loose connection on your fuel pump or the pump itself could be dead. You never know, dodo happens.

How do you repair a leak in the oil system?

where is the leak coming from? if it is the valve cover gasket, that's easy to replace, just look in the repair manual for your car. if its 'burning" oil. you may need to get the engine rebuilt, fixing oil leaks can range from $5 to $3-$4 thousand, so, it all depends

A 1991 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer 50 l 302 misfires even after changing the map sensor distributor cap wires plugs rotor cap and fuel pump what else could be wrong?

I had the same problem in my 351 Windsor engine and it was the camshaft causing the intake on one of my pistons to not open up making it seem like it was misfiring. Check for what's called lift loss your might have a worn lobe. The camshaft specifications should be 0.2375 Inch for the intake and 0.2474 inch for the exhaust now if the lift loss is greater by 0.005" then replace your camshaft Hope this helps you bud
