What is a soft fire brick?

A fire brick, or refractory brick, is a block of ceramic material that can withstand high temperatures and is used to line furnaces, kilns, fireboxes, and fireplaces. For example, they use it to surround pipes, conduits, etc. in walls as fire breaks. Hard fire bricks are used on the inside of things like kilns because they absorb and conduct heat easily, which allows for the high temperatures needed in cooking and firing. Soft, or insulating, fire bricks are used on the outside of kilns because their very low thermal conductivity allows them to insulate and keep the heat inside the kiln. Singular insulating fire bricks can also be used as a base for small scale soldering and precious metal clay firing with hand-held soldering irons and blowtorches. In this case, the soft fire brick protects the hard surface beneath it from damage.

What is a remedy for skunk odor removal?

The best remedy for skunk odor is BON-CC-41. Other remedy's aren't as safe or good. Tomato juice is a old wives tale. It just masks the odor or tricks your nose into thinking the skunk odor is gone, but really your just smelling the tomato juice because they is the new scent. The hydrogen peroxide method is not safe. It has even cause blisters on people before who were handling it.

Would a fireplace be a good source to heat your home?

In general, a standard fireplace is not the most efficient method of heating your home. A substantial amount of the heat produced is lost up the chimney. Depending on your local regulations, an efficient wood stove or fireplace insert would be a better choice.

Always consult with a local qualified expert before installing any heating system.

Can a direct vent fireplace be vent to the side instead of the back?

The simple answer is yes. Be sure to follow the manufacturers maximum vent length guidelines. Generaly, if you increase the vertical section length 1st, then go with the horizontal portion to the outside, you improve the main flame light-off and draft chactaristics. Hopefully, the side you choose for the termination on the outside, favors the downwind side of the prevailing winds, as this can be problematic, if upwind. lc
