What does the light of an engine - Check Engine Light - on a Ford Windstar mean?
A good auto parts store will scan codes for free. However, do you research on other forums to learn what each code could 'really' mean. Most the time it's a vacuum leak. Don't let them sell you expensive sensors before researching the codes.

My real-life examples:
DTC code P0402 on 98 Tracer - replaced the EGR valve, light came back. Made my daughter live with it for 2 years. Yesterday I had a few minutes while waiting for the oil to drain and poked around the engine - found a small 2" piece of rubber hose that had softened and collapsed right where the PCV connects. A free piece of hose from Autozone and the light cleared after a few drive cycles!
Major auto parts chain told me my TSP (Throttle position sensor) was bad due to the CEL being lit up (might have been a P1120 DTC). $40 and 10 minutes to replace - ((_#*&$ light came right back. A few days ago, after doing some reading, I bought a $4 can of throttle body spray cleaner - used 1/2 the can on my 98 Sable - voila! CEL is gone again!
*DTC codes P0171 and P0174 - O2 sensors reported lean fuel conditions on bank 1 & 2 on my 2001 Windstar. Some research later found out the 1999-2003 Windstar 3.8l engines had a known problem and Ford issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) describing exactly how to fix it. Instead of wasting $80 replacing perfectly good 02 sensors, I used that money to buy the parts for the repair.
I have added untold miles to the life of my engine, and kicked up my MPG for real savings!
Pay attention to those check engine lights - they're there for a reason. And with the internet today, you can readily find the information to keep your car healthy, and even save some $$ in the process.
the engine light monitors computer sensors and functions, not vital things like temp. oil pressure etc. when that light is on, there will be a code stored in the computers memory. Most auto supply stores can access and read the codes for you, which will tell you what to look for. your particular vehicle is bad about setting a code for being too lean, probably the intake leaking vacuum

Often it's something relatively simple even though it may be a bit expensive. Oxygen sensors for example can be pricey and you should replace both sides at the same time. On the other hand it can sometimes be as simple as a loose gas cap. The code scanner is a great help and if you intend to do much of your own work it's good to have your own scanner. On 1998 and 99 windstars a flashing MIL (check engine light) means that the computer has detected one or more misfiring cylinders. You will need to connect an OBDII compliant scanner to the datalink port under the dash on the drivers side to scan the computers trouble codes and determine which cylinders are misfiring.

Here's what my 2001 Owner's Manual (see "Related Questions") says: 1) Prepare for programming the HomeLink Universal Transceiver by erasing the three factory default codes by holding down the 2 outside buttons until the red light begins to flash after 20 seconds. Release both buttons. 2) Hold the end of your hand-held transmitter 2-5 inches away from the HomeLink Universal Transceiver surface (located on your visor) while keeping the red light in view. 3) Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold the hand-held transmitter button and the desire HomeLink button. Do not release these buttons until step 4 has been completed(!) 4) The red light on the visor will flash slowly and then rapidly. Release both buttons when the red light flashes rapidly. Repeat for the other buttons as needed. It's been 5 years since I had to program mine, but it's still working like a champ. :)

This was probably done by the owner of the garage door opener that was installed in the garage where the Windstar is parked. Actually it did!The above is incorrect, The 98 Windstar LX came with a garage door opener built into the driver's sun visor. I know because I have one! However, I could not get it to work when I followed the instructions in the Owner's Manual, so it's merely a curiosity for now.

Not All Windstar 98 LX have itI have a Windstar 98 LX too, but I don't have a garage door opener.But at roof center, just behind the convex mirror, I have a 3 buttons panel, which I beleived that was a remote control, but it was a coins holder :). I know for you it's a remote control. Try replacing the battery or something.
Which door opener you haveNormally, the instructions in your manual should be accurate. If it's not working, maybe your door opener is too new for the Windstar 98, and the frequencies are not compatibles. Which year/brand is your door opener? Purple or orange learn button?

My 2006 Liberty, Diesel, Factory Tow Package, had no provision to "plug in a brake controller". I had to hard wire everything. Ground & Positive directly to the battery. Found a rubber hole plug, above the gas pedal, punched 2 seporate holes in that to go through the firewall. I spliced the brake signal wire into the output from the brake light switch, that was the 5th. wire from the front on the switch. (test it before cutting) The Brake Control wire connection was as follows below: Remove the drivers side (left kick panel). Locate a white plastic cover, standing vertical, covering a large harness coming up from the floor. With cover removed, locate a 14 gauge solid red wire with a white tape marked "BRAKE". This wire will be loose, with a bare end, not connected to anything. It may be folded several times and will stretch out 15". This is the wire that goes to the rear bumper trailer elect. connection for the "Electric Brakes". Connect this end to your Brake Controller as per the instructions. True story.

These have issues w the lifters holding pressure even w engine off wifes 02 had a dead cyl #5 specifically (center front of engine) pulled valve cover start van loosen rockers 2 at a time to the edge of making clacking if idle clears you need lifters. Lifters stay pumped up holding valves open and at high rpm (freeway speed) because all are at same pressure. Hope that helps can cause stalling and constant engine light, note all the control modules are linked to pcm engine light on will cause other random lights like abs brake and mil light stalling ect to trick you into dealer. DO NOT USE FOXWELL SCANNERS ON THIS VEHICLE WILL CAUSE UNDESIRED OPERATION.

These doors sometimes can be a pain in the ars to adjust. TAke it to the dealer or a body shop you are familiar with.
Adding to this since I had a problem like this. I used a Dry Silicone Lubricant spray and sprayed the latches and all the rollers on the door and it fixed my problem with this. Don't use WD40 or another oilbased lubricant because it will just cause more junk to stick to them and make the problem even worse within a few weeks. Make sure it is a dry lubricant. What is the procedure for packing wheel bearings on a 93 s-10?
Assuming 2WD, since 4WD is quite different and uses sealed bearings for the front wheels. Remove tire. Remove callipers. Remove rotor. Note that most 2WD vehicles with front disk brakes use rotors that have the bearing race either pressed in or as an integral part of the rotor. Take extra caution when removing the rotor so that the bearings (inner and outer) are not damaged. Thoroughly wash the bearings and race in solvent and use compressed air to thoroughly blow out solvent, old grease and contaminants, taking extra caution to make sure you are able to re-install each bearing into it's original race. Make sure the bearing and race is cleaned and that all of the old wheel grease is removed. Inspect each bearing for pitting and heat discoloration. If any of the roller bearings or bearing races (inner or outer) are discolored (blue or black) or have any pitting, the bearing or race should be replaced. Slowly turn each roller so that you can inspect the entire surface. Using clean wheel bearing grease, force grease into the roller assembly, using sufficient grease and force that the grease fills the voids inside the bearing retainer. All surfaces of all rollers should be coated with a liberal amount of grease. Re-assemble the bearings into the race. If the inner wheel seal was damaged during disassembly make certain that it is replaced with a new wheel seal. Many of the more reputable shops will never re-use a wheel seal when re-packing wheel bearings. Make sure the axle spindle is clean and that brake dust has been removed so that no contaminants will get into the wheel bearing assembly when you put the wheel back together. Install the rotor assembly and tighten the wheel bearing to "feel". If you haven't done it before, make sure the bearing is tight enough that there is no "play" in the bearing and that the bearing still moves somewhat freely but with slight resistance. If the bearing is too loose it will pit and overheat. If it is too tight it will shatter and sieze. Make certain that you use a new cotter pin and trim it to the proper length and bend it so that it clears the dust cover. Reassemble the calliper assembly and put the wheel back on.
