You adjust the tension by loosing the bolts on the alternator mounting brackets and sliding the alternator until the proper tension, (around 1/4" deflection at mid point of the belt) is achieved. If however it has a Serpentine Belt driving the alternator, then there is no adjustment. Tension is held by the idler pulley. If it is loose then the belt is worn out, the idler tensioner is defective, or both.
What are the timing marks for a 1990 Geo Prizm?
The intake and exhaust cam sprockets have an indention on one tooth of the sprocket. Aline this dot with the crease in the back plate. The intake crease is a vertical crease at 12 oclock position and the exhaust is a vertical crease slightly before the 12 oclock position.
If cam sprockets have been removed make sure you align the cam shafts before reinstalling sprockets. Set the knock pin of the intakse shaft to the 12 oclock position and the exhaust shaft to the 5 oclock position. Once this is done install the sprockets so their respective timing marks line up with the marks on the metal back plate.

How do you remove driver side front cv joint on 96 geo prizm?
1) Remove the cotterpin for the CV shaft axle nut and loosen nut
2)Jack the front of the vehicle
3) Place a jack stand under to secure the raised vehicle
4)Remove the tire
4) Remove the tie rod cotterpin & nut. Use a gear puller to loosen the tie rod joint (or use a tie rod joint splitter if you plan on replacing the tie rod ball joint).
5) Remove the axle nut
6) Remove the 2 nuts and 1 bolt for the lower ball joint.
7) Use your puller to free the axle shaft from the wheel hub. and separate the hub from the CV shaft
8) Place a pry bar between the CV shaft and transaxle and pry the CV shaft loose.
9) Remove the shaft
TO INSTALL: IMPORTANT-DO NOT BEND THE CV SHAFT JOINTS. DO NOT PULL ON THE SHAFT JOINTS. DO NOT USE A HAMMER TO INSTALL
1) Lube the CV shaft (tranaxle side) spline. Insert the shaft with the split ring retainer opening at 6 o'clock. Firmly press the shaft into the transaxle
2) Lube the wheel hub shaft spline and place wheel hub over the shaft.
3) Reinstall everything removed in removal steps. Torque each to Mfg. specs.

If you have a "surging idle" (idles speed goes up and down repeatedly cycling every few seconds) this is most commonly caused by a lean condition and lean conditions are usually the result of a vacuum leak.
If the idle speed is significantly greater when the engine is cold than when it is fully warmed up, this is normal.
If the idle speed is greater when warmed up than when cold, this indicates a malfunctioning idle speed control (IAC). You can get a replacement unit from your parts supplier or Toyota dealership parts department.

Of course if your A/C doesn't work then you're out of luck. sounds like a problem I had on my 94. there is a cable with a ring on the end that goes on a rod that is located to the right of your right knee if you are sitting in the drivers seat. just slip it back on. If you crank the vent control to fast this can pop off. you are not getting air to the windshield.

Have someone check the charging system and the battery. You can usually get this done for free. We had continual problems with the lights (brake and battery) on my daughter's 1992 Geo Prism. My husband replaced the alternator but the lights kept coming on so we replaced the battery. The car died one day so we had someone check the charging system. It turned out to be a bad alternator to begin with. My husband put in a new alternator and now it is working fine. This happened to me once, as well. It turns out that I had a bad alternator. Probably a starter going bad. Mine went bad and if I let the engine cool down completely (poured cold water on it and then tapped on the starter with a wrench) it would start up again. As a starter goes bad it won't work when it is hot. Tapping on the starter with the angled crank from the jack in the trunck helped me to make it home until I could get the starter replaced. Similar thing happened to me. Turned out my starter was bad and I replaced it. No problems now in over a year.

This is for a 1997+ model Chevrolet Prizm. First, disconnect your battery and remove it (negative lead first, positive second). This will come in handy later. Jack your vehicle up and mount it on jack stands. Now remove the two splash shields on the underside. Your starter will be mounted on the forward section of the engine, roughly centered. From the underside you should be able to remove the bottom mounting bolt and disconnect the two electrical connections (One is mounted on a threaded terminal post, the other is a molex-style connector). The top mounting bolt is a little tricker, but made markedly easier having earlier removed your battery. It is on the reverse side from the other mounting bolt and has quite a bit of clutter around it. A short, slim profile ratchet will come in very handy here (something I wish I'd had). After you have disconnected the leads and removed the two mounting bolts, you should be able to wiggle the starter out from the underside. Installation of the starter is the exact reverse of this procedure. Good luck!
We removed the fans also. This gave extra room to get to the starter and was'NT much more work. Also we didnt remove the electrical connections until after we had the starter out completely, as we could'NT get to one of them from the underside. It all went fairly quickly with the above help. Answeri have a 98 Chevy prizm and when my starter went i just took it to a repair shop and had them do it.The info on the answer above is very accurate!! Have just the basic sockets and ratchets, I have a terrible time trying to reach the top bolt, even after removing the battery. My solution to this was removing the air intake(held in place by 3 bolts located inside the bottom half of the housing, directly under the air filter). I didnt take it all the way out, just got it unmounted and moved it back toward the firewall. After that, it was a piece of cake!

Looking into the engine compartment from the passenger side you you will see two large bolts and a smaller bolt on the alternator. The large upper bolt is the pivot bolt, the lower bolt is the locking bolt. The third bolt is used to adjust belt tension.
1. Loosen the alternator locking bolt. You may need a breaker bar to free the bolt.
2. Loosen the pivot bolt.
3. Turn the tension bolt counter clockwise to loosen tension, clockwise to increase tension.
4. Tighten the pivot bolt and locking bolt.
