How do you change the starter in 1997 a GM jimmy?
The starter on a 1997 gm jimmy is going to be under the vehicle on the passenger side of the transmission and you take off the wheel and that back guard that's held on by Christmas trees that's what i call them and on the top of it there should be a shield and you have to take that shield off if there is one and then you will have a positive and negative on it and before you touch them you need to undo either the positive or negative battery terminals and then take them off and after you do that and take off the positive and negative off the starter there will be two bolts holding the starter in place and loosen the bolts off of the bell housing and pry it down and away from the starter with out messing it up then put a shim in it to hold it and the bell housing and starter should have a notch in them both to where you can pull the starter out but its going to be very aggravating but just jiggle and move it around and it will come out and put it back in how you took it out and the new starter most likely will not come with a shield so take your old one and put it on when you have the new starter up in there with both the negative and positive cables back on but that's pretty much how you change a starter in a 1997 GM jimmy

heater core plugged or air locked check to see if hoses going to heater core are hot
no you don't have to. you will need to remove the top steering colum cover and bring down the bottom one just a bit. there are 4 screws holding it together. remove those, separate the covers. now just remove the 2 small screws holding the switch in, slide the switch out and disconnect the connectors.

Can the starter on a 1994 gmc jimmy be removed without having to take to a repair shop?
I'LL ANSWER MY OWN QUESTION, YES THE STARTER CAN BE REMOVED WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE TO THE REPAIR SHOP. IT IS A REAL PAIN THOUGH REQUIRING REMOVAL OF EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND NUMEROUS OTHER PARTS TO MAKE ROOM TO GET IT OUT OVER THE FRAME, BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND FRAME AND OUT THROUGH THE WHEELWELL. MY SON SAID PEP BOYS TOLD HIM THERE WAS NO WAY WITHOUT BRINGING TO A SHOP. I TOLD HIM IF THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY, BUT WHAT A PAIN IT IS. MY OLD FORD AEROSTAR TAKES 30 MINUTES TO REMOVE AND REPLACE IT'S STARTER. THIS WILL TAKE A TOTAL OF 10 HOURS ATLEAST FOR ME TO GET IT ALL BACK TOGETHER.
How do you tighten the serpentine belt on a jimmy?
Most Jimmys use a spring loaded belt tensioner that is not adjustable. NOTE: It is normal for belt tensioner to "bounce" a little bit when engine is running. If your belt is squeaking here are a couple things you can do. Replace the belt with a QUALITY belt. Don't buy the cheap belts on vehicles with long serpentine belts. They will squeak. I recommend Garorback belts. If your belt is still squeaking ensure that all pulleys and belt driven items are working properly by rotating and checking them with the belt off. Most GM vehicles have an idler pulley. It is very common for the bearing on it to go bad. If you still have a squeak then replace the tensioner assembly. They are readilly availably at parts stores.
How bad is the repair on a gmc jimmy when it won't go into reverse?
well, if you have problems getting it into other gears, then it could be a linkage issue. however, more thank likely, it is a transmission issue. check the fluid, make sure that it is full. (sometimes it will not go into gear if there is not enough fluid in the transmission.) otherwise, get ready for a transmission repair or replacement.

Why might the heating system in a 1998 GMC Jimmy stop working?
Blown fuse, blower motor, or switch. IF the Heater Control Valve isn't getting Vacume or 12 Volts(IF Electric-IF the Heater Core is Blocked or Heater hoses Kinked-OR EVEN a bad ACTUATOR DOOR-I Don't know if u are talking a Blower Problem or WATER Circulation Problem. MY Jimmy stopped producing "heat" through the vents. The fan worked at all speeds, but all it blew was cold air. I actually did not notice until winter hit. If this describes your problem try flushing your cooling system and replacing your thermostat. I tried just flushing b/c the thermostat looked upon visual inspection. I get hot air now after I put a new one in. After losing hot air in December '04, I discovered that my 1998 Jimmy had coolant grit blocking the heater core on the inlet. Removing the hoses from the core and backflushing did the trick. The guys at the local Jiffy Lube flushed the entire system and converted me to green coolant. I've been OK since (4/2005). After having this problem: Even during 2 hour drives the engine temp needle wouldn't move and therefore no heat in the cabin for 2 years in my 1998 GMC Jimmy w/ 4.3L V6 Vortec 4WD, and getting not so good mileage (about 9.5-11 mpg) I turned to the old owner's manual (something I or any other mechanic would rarely do!). There in the scriptures lie the answer 87 OCTANE!(Mid-Grade) My Jimmy now heats up to normal operating temperature within minutes despite the cold days of Colorado winter and costs me a lot less at about 14-16.5 mpg average fuel economy. I've noticed that most Jimmys don't have the digital fuel economy readout but mine has shown me what a difference 10 cents at the fuel station can do and also has the side effect of comfort in the form of heat. So if your SUV requires a higher octane fuel (read the owners manual), then it really, I mean really, requires it. (4/2006)

How do you change the spark plugs in a 1996 GMC Jimmy?
Its a pain without wobble sockets... Hell itz a pain with them.. But i try to go under the wheel well flap, alomost straight shot.. Try putting the socket on then matching it to the wrench..
I'm not sure how simmilar the problem I had is to this one but i hope this helps: My 1998 GMC Jimmy would not release the key from the ignition, and it would sometimes stick in park... The soultion i found is that there is a bunch of (about 4) wires conected to the "shifting column" underneath the boot (near the top left of the boot and about 3 inches down) our problem was caused by having the wires in that connector come loose. the solution was to push the wires back into the connecting peice.
Appearantly GMC didn't think twice about putting fragile electrical components near moving parts...I don't know how similar the 1998 is to the 2000 model but i still hope this helps.
