Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

500 Questions

Your water pipes in your bathtub make a howling noise. When you open the sink faucet it stops or if you wait long enough it stops on its own. How do you solve this problem?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This howling noise is likely caused by high water pressure in the pipes. Install a pressure-reducing valve to regulate the water pressure and prevent the noise. If the issue persists, you may need to consult a plumber to check for any other underlying problems in the plumbing system.

How can you fix a appliance which was plugged to 220V when it is 100V?

User Avatar

I guess the question has to be asked, how difficult was it to plug a 110 volt configured plug into a 220 volt configured receptacle This is the main reason that plugs and receptacles have configuration differences. Check NEMA configurations chart on Google.

More than likely there is extensive damage. If the television was designed for operation at 110/120VAC. Typically, one of the first components that 'sees' the incoming power is a transformer, which at minimum has probably been destroyed. Some sets use an electronic device instead of a transformer, but they are also capable of handling the higher voltage by design. At bare minimum, the transformer would need to be replaced.

By increasing the supply voltage by essentially 100%, the current was also probably increased reciprocally and completely overloaded the 'power' circuitry.

More than likely, the power circuit was destroyed. And possibly some of the secondary circuits connected to it.

The only real way to access the level of damage would be to have it inspected by a qualified television repair service, but it is highly probable (and most likely) that it will not be worth repair.

Can you get carbon monoxide poisoning from diesel semi trucks?

User Avatar

What makes flames come out your exhaust?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Usually a product of valve overlap and exhaust. It's basically unburnt fuel coming through and igniting on the hot exhuast tip when it hits the air at the end of the exhaust pipe. In aspirated cars it's large valve overlap which helps scavenging and performance in the top end. Turbo cars, due to the large amounts of fuel at full noise. Normally happens after high RMP then throttle snapped shut.

How often should you change the carpet in a rental house?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The answer to this question is probably only when the landlord believes that it is to his economic interest to do so. Now I can't say this is absolutely true for all 50 states, because there are some city jurisdictions that require landlords to paint the rental interior every 3 or 4 years. However, for most readers of this answer, this is the exception to the rule. As far as carpeting is concerned, landlords are required to repair and if that is not feasible, to replace carpet that is worn out and presents a tripping or other hazard to the current tenant. First off, landlords like other businessmen, are in the rental business to make money. So painting and carpet replacement are generally only done when the landlord can gain value. Just because a tenant wants a new paint color or a more fashionable style of carpet-won

95 astro van runs rough and blows black smoke?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The black smoke is usually unburned fuel from the vehicle running too rich. If the check engine light is on you can pull the codes which will give you guidance. O2 sensors are common as well as a variety of ignition & other sensors. Test components before replacing, you can spend a lot of money guessing and throwing parts at the vehicle.

How can you tell if a 3 prong outlet is grounded?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You can use a multimeter to test for continuity between the ground prong of the outlet and a known ground source, such as a metal water pipe or grounding rod. Another method is to use a plug-in circuit tester that indicates if the outlet is properly grounded.

Do you need to soak gunite in new pool construction?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The gunite cures with heat. You want it to cure slowly to avoid cracks like in a dry desert. You don't need to soak it, just wet down the sides for about ten minutes, as many times as you would like to during the first seven days if it rains, you get a break. After seven days the gunite is cured and any additional soaking is not beneficial.

What can cause a burning smell and white smoke to come from the back wheel?

Sounds like the rear caliper or brake piston is not releasing all the way. I would replace this and the rear brakes. It has possibly warped the drum or disk depending on if you have disk brakes or drum in the rear. Good luck.

Exhaust leak in engine compartment area?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The first thing to look for is around the exhaust manifold area. This is where many exaust leaks start for different reasons. The area of the the leak is going to be usually a black color because of the of carbon residue left from the burning of fuel. This will be the tell tale sign of the leak.the exhaust manifold usually leads to a down tube that either goes into a pipe that that goes back to a catylitac converter or to a flex pipe(it usually looks like a braided steel hose. These pieces are bad for rusting out. That's the problem im having now.front wheel drives are different than rear wheel drives, because of that flex pipe, fwd have that and rwd don't.Rwd use a donought from the exhaust manifold to the pipe, where as fwds use that flex hose. Now in a rwd car that donought can and will be damged or rust out, just like the areas where the flex tube is on a fwd do.these areas are usually bolted together with a clamp of some sorts so those are the the areas you should look first.
