How to turnoff the check engine light on a 1998 Oldsmobile achieva?
take it to your nearest auto parts store(autozone or advance auto) and they will clear the code for you but i would suggest you fix the problem first otherwise it will just come back on
PASSLOCK I or II DISABLEMENT
The following is a procedure to disable Passlock I or II Systems for vehicles in which remote start/stop system installations are required. This procedure is required because a remote start system will not function with the current Theft Deterrent System (Passlock) which is included on many 1996 and up GM vehicles.
Please note that this modification is intended to be used only in conjunction with the installation of a remote start/stop system and does not provide a procedure to install a remote start/stop system.
CAUSE If an attempt is made to start a vehicle by a means other than a key rotation in the ignition switch, the Body Control Module (BCM) will interpret this start as a vehicle theft and disable the fuel injectors.
CORRECTION A minor wiring modification may be made to allow the vehicle to be started remotely. This modification includes adding a switch to allow the customer to select ON to disable Passlock or OFF for normal Passlock operation.
CAUTION: When this modification is performed and the switch is set to the ON position, the theft deterrent feature will be disabled. When the theft deterrent is disabled the SECURITY or THEFT telltale will light up indicating that the theft deterrent system is NOT functioning.
PASSLOCK MODIFICATION
Refer to appropriate GM service manuals and/or SVMQP Electrical Guideline Manual for instruction on splicing and electrical connections. 1. Select a suitable on-off switch (see note below) which will be used to disable/ enable the Passlock System. Mount the switch in a location such that it is accessible to the driver and will not interfere with normal vehicle operation. NOTE: This is an extremely low current circuit (approx. 7mA), it is therefore very important that a high quality, low energy, fast acting switch be utilized for this application. 2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. 3. Locate the Main Ignition Switch Harness. GM's Passlock System wires exit the Ignition Switch Tumbler together and then join with the Main Ignition Switch Harness. (See http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/ or http://64.85.6.118/diagrams/diagrams.asp and select your Make, Model and Year for wire colors and clues on the quickest way to access these wires.) 4. Locate the Yellow Passlock Data Wire which is included in a bundle of three tiny (20 GA) wires wrapped in friction tape. Cut this wire and splice a 0.5mm2 (20 GA) yellow wire to each end of the cut wire. Keep wire length to a minimum. Route modification wires clear of moving parts. Connect the yellow wires to the switch such that the contacts are OPEN when the switch is in the ON position. 5. Turn modification switch to the OFF postion (contacts closed). 6. Start vehicle to verify normal operation. If engine cranks but will not start" recheck the switch position (contacts should be closed), wire connectors and modification wiring.
SWITCH OPERATION
To enable remote start: Start the engine with the ignition key (modification switch must be in the OFF position). Turn modification switch to the ON position (contacts open). The SECURITY or THEFT telltale will light up indicating that the Passlock System is inoperative. Once the SECURITY or THEFT telltale has been on for at least 5 seconds the vehicle can be turned off and then remotely started.
To disable remote start: The Passlock System can be reactivated by turning the modification switch OFF (contacts closed). Vehicle can either be running or off when this is done.
Please note that the VCM/PCM will record Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) related to the security system when the modification switch is in the ON position (circuit open). This is due to the way that the VCM/PCM interprets this condition.
NOTICE Any condition which removes battery power from the Vehicle Control Module/Powertrain Control Module (VCM/PCM) (e.g. dead battery, disconnected harness connectors, etc.) will prevent the vehicle from being restarted. If the engine exhibits a cranks but will not start symptom, place the modification switch in the OFF (contacts closed) position. This will reactivate the Passlock System and allow the vehicle to be started with the ignition key.
This really works, took me about 45 min's and a cost of $4.50 for the switch "that had short wires built in"! Wish I would have known this before all the headache, and $$ spent...GM kept tell my mencanic it can't be done...BULL!!!!
AnswerYou have a passlock security system. I had mime replaces @ $300 and now 85 days later it is doing the same thing! The fuel pump is shutiing down because the security system is telling the car that someone is trying to seal the car-This is the first year that the system can not be bypassed-before 1997 you could just bypass it some way. Be sure that you NEVER try and start the car until the light stops blinking. Otherwise the 10 min has to satrt again GOOD LUCK!!if you simply cut the small yellow wire in the column from the ignition switch it will disable the passlock system and the carwill start and run fine. the security light in the dash will always be lit up solid. worked great on our 1998 after we sent in the IPC twice to be repaired. and also replace the lock cylinder and chip key to try to solve no start problems with the passlock system.. also to no avail. car has been startign perfectly for over a year now after cutting the yellow wire. there are three small wires from the ignition lock assembly. the yellow one is the one to cut. i am going to today install a remote start kit on a 1991 and will cut the same wire to disable the passlock system on it so the remote starter will work.
Listen to these people!! They know what they are talking about. I followed their advice cause i was having the same problems with my 97 achieva. I cut the yellow wire and had no trouble since. the security light on the dash blinks all the time but its worth it to me! Good luck!!
UPDATE 01/16/2010: I have a '97 Olds Achieva as described and experienced exactly the same symptoms--crank, no start. I went down to Pep Boys and purchased a two-way toggle ($2.99), some wire ($5.99) and went to work as described above. I cut the yellow wire in the three-wire set, spliced it into the toggle, tape it all up with some electrical tape and the car started right up! I put everything back together gently, leaving the toggle hidden in the column shroud, tested it some more without problems, and here I am, having saved myself countless dollars and hours of frustration! Follow these instructions and you can't go wrong! Email me if you run into the same problem and I'll walk you through it: ch33rful-at-yahoo.com.
I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Achieva SL with the same problem, the security light comes on and when i try to start it it cranks but turns off immediately after start up. Many people and many different sites have recommended cutting the yellow wire in the steering column to bypass the security system but when i did so the engine continues to turn off immediately after start up. I know there's no problem with the engine or fuel pump because just the day before when i left the key in the ignition for ten minutes and waited for the security system to turn off it worked just fine. Any ideas or suggestions?
Why is my Oldsmobile Achieva 1997 sputtering and shaking?
I just lost my 1996 achieva due to engine fire, GREAT CAR, it will be missed. It was the 4 cylinder 2.4L engine. 5 speed stick. I was having a misfire on cylinders 1 and 3. My ignition coils were bad. Ignition coils are found just under the engine cover above the spark plugs.
What is the fuel capacity of a 1997 Oldsmobile Achieva?
The gas tank itself displays the number 8 on the bottom of it, however my 97 Acheiva seems to be a bottomless well.
If the fuel pump is known to be good, we can go downstream toward the engine to look for clues. When fuel leaves the tank it passes through an in-line filter. Clogging in the filter will reduce the volume of fuel reaching the engine. The engine may run fine at idle and while cruising at constant speed, but stall under acceleration. This is because some fuel is getting through, but not enough. Clogged fuel injectors can cause the same symptom.
Fuel odor is a sign that fuel is either leaking before it reaches the cylinder or it is getting through the cylinder without getting burned or burned completely. Check to see where in the system the fuel odor originates. Work outdoors while there is no wind. If the odor is coming from the tailpipe then you can start checking for reasons fuel is getting through the engine without getting burned. Maybe there is too much fuel for the spark system to ignite, which could be caused by an injector being stuck open or leaking. Injectors are opened by an electrical signal from the computer. Verify that the signal is present and coming only at the right time. Maybe there is a failure in the spark system. The spark must be hot enough to ignite the fuel-air mixture and it has to come at the right time in the cycle.
If you smell fuel in the engine compartment it is most likely due to a leak in the system before fuel reaches the cylinder. Inspect all hoses and connections. Look for wet spots and drips. Check the vapor canister to see if it is 'fuel logged' and needs to be replaced. Check the engine emissions hoses to see if recirculated fuel vapors are escaping. Check the vacuum level to make sure there are no air leaks. Check engine codes to see if any sensors are reporting problems.
How do you fix an 92 Achieva from Idle Surging?
Im not sure about a 92, but when it happened to my 98, i had to replace the Idle control valve. its generally about 50 bucks and is very easily done.
Don't try to bypass the compressor by using a shorter belt. That will alter the belt wrap around the pulleys, which will result in slippage, squealing, and rapid belt wear. Go to www.dormanproducts.com and look up the part number for an A/C bypass pulley and then call your local auto parts store to check stock. They fit in place of your compressor and use the same bolts and bolt holes. No drilling. They contain a pulley the same size as your compressor. They cost around $30. You can use the original belt and keep the same belt routing. That's the best way to go.
Where is the horn relay located on a 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva S?
It Is located in the convenience center left side of I/P above fuse block
How do you change the transmission oil on an Oldsmobile Achieva 1997?
Get a trans pan gasket, filter, and fluid at your auto parts store. Drive the car until the trans. fluid is hot (about 5 minutes) then put the car up on jackstands/blocks or a lift. I recommend setting the key to Lock and removing the negative battery terminal so you don't accidentally set off the airbag. Being careful of the hot exhaust, loosen (but do not remove yet) all the transmission pan bolts. When they're all loosened, take out all but the 4 corner bolts. Now ya gotta be careful removing the bolts on the end of the pan because it's 350 degree fluid--you really don't want to spill that on yourself. However the old gasket is likely to stick. Take out the corner bolts from one end, and hopefully you can tip the pan down in a controlled manner, spilling most of the fluid into an appropriate container (depending on model you may have up to 6 quarts). If the pan sticks, you can whack it with a rubber mallet or pry with a screwdriver, but be very careful not to damage the mating surfaces or it will leak. Now the filter should be easily visible, replace that. Carefully clean the transmission pan, and line up the gasket. Make sure all of the bolts go through the gasket before you tighten anything. Tighten those bolts in stages, in a crisscross pattern--first to finger-tight, then to moderately tight, then torque to spec. Fill the trans through the dipstick hole. Go slow and don't overfill.
That's it!
Where is the thermostat located on an 1997 Oldsmobile lss?
It is under the goose neck. The goose neck is connected to the top radiator hose. remove the hose, then loosen the goose neck the thermostat is under, or inside. Its pretty easy to do. THE ENGINE MUST BE COLD, YOU COULD BE BURNED OR WORSE, ONLY DO THIS IF THE ENGINE IS COLD!
It sounds like you are looking at the fuel injectors rather than the spark plugs. The spark plugs are located under the large cover on top of the engine that identifies it as a quad 4 engine.
There should be 4 fasteners located towards the center of the cover if memory serves.
Do not try to remove the other around the outer edge of the cover.
Make sure you remove the electrical connector and the previously mentioned fasteners, and pull straight up on the cover.
There will be resistance to this because you are pulling the spark plug boots off as you lift.
Since the spark plugs are recessed there may be debris around the spark plug holes that will fall into the cylinder and could damage your engine.
Make sure that you remove this debris before removing the plugs.
Blowing it off will air or even vacuuming could work but but remember that this is very important
Low side service port on the AC system of a 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva?
Follow the larger hose from the compressor - maybe near the drier at the passenger side firewall hate to be the one to tell you it is on the compresser be sure to put a rag over the high side hose so you don't get the burns I got while changing cans of 134a blue cap can't miss it mine is a 1994 but I'd bet that's where it is on a 96 a black light works to see the leak finder more bad news if you can't find the leak look under the front of the car and if it's like mine you will see glowing green or whatever color leak fiinder all over the bottom of the compressor I just found it and as soon as it's daylight I will search for a line or something but I fear it is the compressor on mine good luck
How many 1993 olds achieva scx where made?
somewhere around 500 or so, i have a 1992 W41 Achieva only like 1500 of them were made.
Where is the blower motor located on a Oldsmobile achieva?
where is the blower motor located a a 1997 oldsmobile achieva
Your 94 Oldsmobile Achieva gets water on the floorboards where is it coming from?
Most likely your heater core has gone bad.
How do you bypass the heater core of a 1997 Oldsmobile Achieva?
In the engine bay, remove the inlet and outlet hose from the firewall for the heater core, get a heater hose connector that matches the hose sizes (fair warning they are 2 different sizes but i cant remember) and just join the 2 hoses together with the connector and some clamps. you wont have heat or defrost by doing this though.
Which fuse is for an alternator on a 94 olds achieva?
I think you will find that it is a fuseable link, located in the engine compartment fuse box
97' Oldsmobile achieva radio removal?
It's not difficult, about 20 min. ,a flashlight, and a torx screwdriver are all that's required. Take out the glovebox, take off the r&l panels under the dash (watch out for the yellow wire on the right panel as that is for the airbag), take out all the torx screws around the glovebox. Remove the torx screws under the dashtrim pad that goes all the way across the panel that surrounds the radio, and carefully (because the panel is actually made of a very light weight plastic covered with vinyl) just pull the panel loose (I think it's easier starting on the drivers side). This gets you to the radio which is held in position by torx screws, take out the screws and the radio just slides out. Just be careful with all the plastic as it breaks very easily, same with all the little tabs around the panel.
Where is the Oil sending unit location 1993 olds achieva?
The oil pressure sending unit is located up on the head near the pulley for the power steering pump. It is on the back side of the head. I had to replace mine. It is an easy job.
Why would coolant be leaking from behind the main pulley on a 96 V6 Oldsmobile Achieva?
Sounds like water pump needs replacing The main pulley is near the top of the engine. The water pump is toward the front of the engine. It is possible that water appears to be leaking from this pulley, but there is a manifold gasket right above it. Double check to find exactly where the water is exiting the engine block. My first hunch is a leaking gasket.
How do you access the spark plugs on a 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva?
Remove the four bolts on the cover plate and lift straight up exposing the wiresets.
Where is the water pump and thermostat on an Oldsmobile Achieva 1996?
Please specify an engine size. If it is a 3.1L v-6 there is a posting already about the t-stat. As for the water pump, it is on the passenger's side and is the forward-most, upper-most pulley driven part. It is a VERY simple replace and is held onto a mounting plate by small bolts. VERY IMPORTANT! Make very sure that you bleed all air from the coolant system after replacing the pump. The air can be released by unscrewing the small top screw on the assy that goes from the coolant bottle to the block. Mark,,,Raleigh, NC Helpful Hint---to loosen the bolts on the pulley, leave the serp belt as is, loosen the pulley mounting bolts, loosen the belt (DO NOT remove completely, remove the pulley, you will see the mounting bolts under the pulley area
Where is the 1975 corvette horn relay location?
