Major characteristic of democracy in ancient Athens?

It was a direct democracy - no members of parliament to distort the public will. Decisions were made by the whole people in assembly, meting fortnightly. The council put matters before them, executed their decisions, and administered routine business between meetings.

In the law courts there were no judges and lawyers to muddy the waters. Large juries of several hundred decided on both guilt and punishment. The large juries were in effect equivalent to a modern opinion poll of what the citizens thought right.

All adult males were eligible to carry any political or public office (except generals, who were selected on ability for obvious self-protection reasons). The difference in ability of individuals was camouflaged/evened out by having panels of ten filling each office, in the expectation that at least one would have common sense. And it spread the money around, with half the populace on the public payroll.

All adult males served in the army and navy, meeting their mutual responsibility to protect themselves and the state.

It existed best when Athens had an empire it had made out of harnessing the other cities of the anti-Persian league and extorting money from them, which it used for its own benefit. This enabled the large numbers on the public payroll without crippling taxes.

Who led the Communist Party in Russia?

The "communist revolution" was led by Vladimir Lenin and his Bolshevik Party followers.

There were two Russian Revolutions in 1917. The February Revolution ousted the Czar, but was not a communist revolution. The Bolshevik changed their name to Communists in March 1918.

What was the reason for the failure of Soviet-style communism?

Because if it only works on paper then it doesn't work at all. The mistake is in referring to communism as a theory when every test given this theory fails. A failed theory is a bad theory. Bad theories seek to blame reality in order to survive. Communism is not the problem it is the reality of the current situation that is to blame. If only everybody in reality would change and be more like the non reality of communism then communism could finally work. But, blame is irrelevant and if communism can't offer a system that conforms to reality instead of asking reality to stop being reality. Systems like capitalism embrace the reality of greed where communism aks that everyone stop being so greedy. But, reality being what it is, only the workers get to reject greed while those that "take care" of the workers keep on clinging to greed. Systems like capitalism understand the principles of supply and demand where systems like communism ignore demand and control the supply. Systems like capitalism understand that costs are directly related to prices yet systems like communism seek to control prices regardless of costs. Communism hopes to create a gargantuan state in order to suppress everyone in order to protect them from themselves so they can finally be free and then mysteriously claim that once that "freedom" is finally obtained this gargantuan state will just disappear into a "stateless society." The real question is not why communism fails in practical politics, the question is what practical person could possibly believe such mindless fantasy as communism could ever work?

When did America become a democracy?

July 4th, 1775

America is not a democracy and never has been. America is whats called a Federal Constitutional Republic. A democracy is where the people govern the nation and that is not the case in America. A republic is where the rule of law governs the nation. But here in the US not only does the law govern us but it also governs the government. It limits their power. Federal just means that we have one central government which is the federal government and separate states that can make their own laws as long as they don't interfere with federal laws. For example, states cant make laws banning guns since its written in the constitution that we have the right to bear arms. The Constitutional part means that we have a constitution that is our law that we follow. We may have democratic values such as voting for presidents, governors, congressmen, etc, but once they are elected they make our decisions. However, if they make bad decisions and the country decides we dont like that elected official, we can impeach that person but its a very hard process.

The proletariat is a class of common workers who have no ownership or control of the means of production of the society. They own nothing but the right to sell their own labor. And they every single day regardless of their job and country they are exploited.

What ideas on government best describes the work of Max Weber?

What are the features of a capitalistic government?

Economies can be classified as "capitalistic" however, often time the term of "capitalism" is not widely understood. A nation with a so-called capitalistic economy, is really a nation with a free market economy. Capitalism in its strict definition exists nowhere. A similar misunderstanding should be noted concerning "communist nations". As with Capitalism, no nation is a communist one. In a free market economy the government is heavily involved in economic affairs. It alters the markets via tariffs, internal taxes, and product requirements. It also sets a minimum wage structure. It even governs the so-called free markets. A free market economy does, however, allow for private property and recognizes that the means of production can be privately owned or owned publicly by stockholders, pension funds, and even government pension funds.

In terms a communist nation, the major means of production are "controlled" by the socialistic government. It is a dictatorship that exists in advance of "communism" a state of being where there is no government at all.

Why might it threaten the US to have new european colonies near them?

President James Monroe first proclaimed the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 to establish a U.S. sphere of influence in the Americas. At this time, Bolivia and several Caribbean islands remained under Spanish control, notably Cuba and Puerto Rico. The United States worried that if Spain lost control of these colonies, France or Britain might gain them.

Secretary of State John Quincy Adams discussed these concerns in a letter to his friend, Hugh Nelson. He wrote that, "Such indeed are, between the interests of that island and of this country, the geographical, commercial, moral, and political relations, formed by nature, gathering in the process of time, and even now verging to maturity, that in looking forward to the probable course of events for the short period of half a century, it is scarcely possible to resist the conviction that the annexation of Cuba to our federal republic will be indispensable to the continuance and integrity of the Union itself."

The United States was also worried about European encroachment in North America. For example, Russia was exploring the northwestern coast of the continent, something Adams expressed his concerns about to the Russian minister.

Ultimately to protect their interests, the American and British governments made a joint declaration protecting the sovereignty of independent nations in the region against France and Spain. Ultimately, the American government outmaneuvered the British by declaring that all European powers (the British included) could not encroach in the region.

What possible advantages or disadvantages of applying ideas from ancient civilization in your government?

Technically civilization is an ancient idea that we use today. As humans we tend to start with a base then build upward to perfect a concept, object, etc. Everything you apply to anything at any time has an infinite amount of possible outcomes(if you believe in that concept). == Any modern society branches from an older society and carries on already conceived ideas then changes them to the needs of the time period. We are using ancient ideas so we do not have to start from absolute scratch, building upon and reconstructing the details but never changing the roots. You cannot change the roots without removing the whole thing and starting with a new idea. Its exactly like building the Great Pyramids, as you ascend upward creating more layers it grows in complexity. Once finished it barely resembles what you started with. Im going to have to say there is no concrete and cannot be answered correctly with the current question.

Why is Louisiana the only state with parishes?

In recognition of their history as both a French and Spanish Colony where the Roman Catholic traditions of the Parish existed. So call it tradition.

Last answer. Improved:

Most of the French colonizing Louisiana were Catholic, and when they were founding Louisiana they named the "counties" parishes instead, after the Catholic religion. If you attend a Catholic church, you may hear the priest refer to to "our parish."
