Only if it's in gear and probably not even then, more likely it would be the torque converter if it has anything to do with the tranny at all. sorry
Will the same method for removing the water pump on a 1992 firebird work for a 93 or 94 firebird?

Where is iat sensor on 1989 firebird?
If it is a tuned port injected motor, it is under the plenum. The plenum is the big grey aluminum box with 8 funny looking pipes, called runners, connected to it.
You'll probably have to have the VATS programmed out of the system but I'm not sure of that. You also realize you'll have to change motor mounts, transmissions, drop in an in tank fuel pump, run new larger fuel lines, etc. You'll probably have to figure out some type of exhaust manifold or header that will work. I'm not one for swapping Chevy engines into the old Pontiacs but I can see why you would want to. Tune port is pretty nice. Good luck with it.
On any alternator you can check with a voltmeter -- disconnect the positive going to the alternator, use a towel or electrical tape to isolate it, then start the car and you should read DC volts accross the terminal of 12-16v if the diodes are working, if they arent switch it to AC -- if you read > 2v your diodes are shorted I'm pretty sure the diodes and regulator are integrated into the Alternator -- so just replace that, otherwise you can take it off and they can check it at any Kragens for free.
How do you deactivate the anti theft system on a 1994 Pontiac Firebird?
You can't bypass it. Get a mobile auto locksmith off of Craigslist who does PATS keys (chipped) and can reset the computer. Just tell him anti theft is activated/needs reset. it takes about 5 minutes and will cost about 100.00. Do not take it to the dealer. Car will be disabled until this is done.

How do you tell the difference between a Chevy 400 and a Pontiac 400?
Many ways. Pontiac 400 has a cast aluminum timing cover, that mounts the water pump directly on it, Chevy 400 has a stamped steel timing cover, water pump mounts to the block. Pontic 400 has fuel pump on the drivers side, Chevy is on passenger side. Pontiac has a separate valley cover below the intake manifold, Chevy intake IS the valley cover. Pontiac distributor does not go through the intake manifold, Chevy does. Pontiac has 10 head bolts per side, Chevy has 17. Pontiac has long exhaust ports that bend 90 degrees from the side of the cylinder head, Chevy exhaust ports end at the face of the cylinder head. Pontiac spark plugs are above the exhaust manifolds, Chevy is below. Pontiac 400 is physically larger than the small block Chevy 400 also.
How do you replace headlight motor on 1992 fire bird?
This one is difficult....so heres a basic run down... Start with a 10MM wrench (not a socket). And a long flathead screwdriver. Roll your headlight all the way up with the knob located next to it. Use the screwdriver to push the support bar commign from the headlight off of the motor extension (located dead center of circular part of motor. you may need the flashlight here). after that the headlight will drop down own it own, nothing is holding it up. On the exact other side fo the motor you have 3 bolts retaining the motor to the car. get the middle and lower one from underneath, it's a tight fir, but easier than going in from the top. Get the top bolt from the top. Then you can tilt and angle the motor to pull it through the hole in the car. Then lift at an angle vertically out of the housing area. Now you grab the new one and reverse this procedure. make sure to disconnect the wires going to the motor FIRST.

How do you replace the alternator on a 1997 Pontiac Firebird?
Hello,
I have a 1997 Firebird V-6. It is right on top. Just remove the serpentine belt from the alternator, unplug the electrical connection on the back of the alternator, remove the mounting bolts and install the new alternator.
I have not replaced one in my bird yet, but I checked the Hanes manual and it is the same.
I am not a professional mechanic, but I have replaced a few in my lifetime.
Good luck.
John
Firebird 2000 headlight make humming noise after they close?
the humming noise you are hearing is the gear inside of the headlight motor. there is a worm the motor turns, you chipped a tooth off of the motor. it won't read that the headlight is down, so it continues to turn until the override shuts it off. its a factory defect. Pontiac used a nylon motor to turn a metal worm. over time the worm wears the gear out. you have three options to fix it. one, replace the motor. two, take the motor out, take it apart rotate the gear inside the motor (only half the gear makes contact with the worm) so the other half of the gear is now used. it should be good for about another year after that. three, take out the motor break it apart and replace the nylon gear with a metal gear. if you take the motor apart, you need to epoxy it back together, the motor is not designed to be worked on. a new gear should cost about 50 dollars. a new motor should cost about 250. but it will have the same nylon gear in it. good luck.
How do you change a powersteering belt for a 1968 Pontiac firebird 400?
Loosen 3 bolts. First there is one on the back of the pump/reservoir, then two closer to the middle of the car holding the bracket that holds the reservoir/ pump. Do not loosen the three bolts that hold the reservoir to the bracket. Usually 9/16 bolt. Then push the pump down to loosen the belt, remove over the fan, replace, tighten. Do not pry on the reservoir to tighten belt. Rule of thumb is to tighten until you can't twist belt more than 1/4 turn by hand. Factory spec if you have a guage: 125 lbs for new belt, 75 for used belt. Have fun! Bruce
How do you know if a 1968 firebird has ram air?
Ram Air can't be mistaken. The dual functional hood scoops along with the custom air cleaner pan is pretty telling. If you mean how can you tell if a particular Firebird is supposed to have it and doesn't.......you'll have to send the VIN to Pontiac Historic Service. For a fee they can tell you what the car was equipped with.
