What is wrong if your 1992 Grand Am keeps shutting off while idling but starts right back up and no mechanic can find the problem?

If you have replaced or unplugged any antitheft component, the computer in the car has to relearn the identity of the part. To do this simply attempt to start the car (some times it will start then shut down instantly) then just leave the key in the running possision. The theft system light will be flashing on the dash for about 10 minutes, when it stops flashing the computer has finished learning the new code. Try starting again, it should run fine now. Also, check the EGR valve. If the car seems to run fine until the engine is warmed up, and then stalls at idle, it's possible that the EGR valve is sticking open.

Where is the thermostat located on a 1998 Plymouth breeze?

Follow the upper radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. This connection is the thermostat housing and the thermostat is located inside it. Be sure the vent hole of thermostat is facing up when installing a new one.

Where can you buy the plastic trim piece on the top of a 1996 Geo Tracker tailgate?

Hi, If youi want to pay top dollal. you can go to your GM Chevy dealer or if you have a salvage yard within a ride your'e willing to go, then call and find out if they have any Trackers there. If your local salvage yard has one, then go with a small toolbox and get one cheaply. The salvage yards have proven to be a valuable resource for me and I have to use a few of them for all I need. Good luck. Steve H.

How do you reset passlock for 2001 Chevrolet Impala?

There are a myriad of possible "solutions" available. If you are even just a little bit technically savvy you can with a little bit of effort disable and or bypass the "passlock" system. Just Google Chevy impala passlock disablement or Chevy impala passlock bypass. There are several ways to do this and it would be better for you to read all the information available and arrive at your own decision. This seems to be a "VERY PREVELENT PROBLEM"

Where is the thermostat located on a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am?

It is located directly under the throttel body.

AnswerWhere is the thermostat on a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am?" Answerwhere is the thermostat on a 2000 Pontiac grand am Instructions on how to change a thermo..Hello, this page has instructions on how to install a new thermostat on a 99+ Grand Am. Also, not listed on the page as an instruction but something I did when changing the thermostat was to take off the throttle body which made getting to the inlet manifold bolts much easier. The bottom bolt was particulary hard to get too, the top bolt was not too bad. Good Luck.

Why does a 1993 Saturn service engine light come on and off at times What is wrong How do you get codes?

A short cut to check the codes on a 1993 Saturn; locate the code reader connector below the steering column under the dash. Insert a wire or paper clip between the upper right two pins of the connector. (pins are side by side) Cycle the key to the "on" position (engine off). The "service engine soon"light will flash the normal ignition code first -three times example blink - one (pause)....one...two (or code 12) repeat blink -one (pause)....one...two (code 12) repeat for a third time. Then the light will flash the next code> Blink - one...two...three (pause) one...two.. (or Code 32) ????EGR circuit failure???? repeat code 32 two more times. finally after all the codes are flashed the normal ignition code will appear again at the end of the cycle.

Remember each code will be repeated three times.

Some shop manuals have the codes listed in the books

Also I think this trick only works up to 1994 (update: actually to 1995. They went to OBDII in 1996).

Maybe try going to Autozone, they will check your codes for you for free.

hope this helps.

AnswerAutozone can't help you... they will only test I believe 1996 and up.

Where is the crank sensor located on 2006 Hyundai Sonata?

Signs of a bad TPSTypically, one of two things will happen if the TPS is bad.

If it returns a voltage that is outside of the range expected by the computer, the check-engine light will come on, and the computer will stop using the TPS to calculate throttle position. Instead, the computer should guess what the throttle position is based on the RPM and other factors. This is called "limp" mode, usually. In this state, the car runs rough, but will run. You should notice a loss of power, and perhaps hesitation, etc.

If, instead, the TPS returns a voltage that is within the expected range, but is off from where it should be, the car will think the throttle is at a position that it is not. This could lead it to miscalculate airflow, and screw with the air-fuel mixture. This may cause the car to conk out, depending on the how off the reading is.

There is usually a procedure for checking the TPS in your shop manual. You can check the voltage range it puts out, and determine if it's faulty or not. On a 2000 Sonata, it should not be adjustable, like it is on older cars. If it's bad, it needs to simply be replaced. The part is easy to replace (two screws, typically), and can be bought at a car part store.

May have same problemI have a 2002 Sonata. I can't answer your question, unfortunately, but I am wondering if the problem I'm currently having is due to the throttle position sensor. My car ran fine until the crankshaft positioning sensor went out. Once that was replaced, the car would start, but not idle properly even with the accelerator floored. Sounded like it wasn't getting enough fuel....or.......?

I have the exact same problem with an 02 accent. car wouldn't start, replaced the crankshaft position sensor, it starts but now the idle is just way off or something, and gets way worse when put into drive, from what I've found so far it sounds like these are symptoms for the throttle position sensor. This and from what I've read a delay in the acceleration when pressing the gas pedal and delays in decelleration when releasing the gas pedal.

How do you wire a rocker switch to radiator fan on a Grand Am?

to shut the fans on and off by yourself. remove the connector for the wires at the fan. hook a wire from the positive on fan motor to the inside toggle switch, do not hook to switch yet. run a wire from the positive on battery, hook to battery after hooking up switch. hook up the wires to the switch. then the battery. its up to you if you want to install a 15 amp fuse in line from battery to toggle switch.. you can also get the power from the fuse box instead of the battery. this should work for you. if not you may need to ground the other fan wire.

2001 Pontiac grand am flashers keeps clicking after turn signal is off?

You might want to check the fuse first. But my guess is your turn signal switch is going bad. I had mine fixed at the local Pontiac dealer as it had been recalled.

***

Forget the fuse, its a faulty hazard switch. GM service bulletin 03043A I believe is the one that covers the recall on 00s and 01s (02s and 03s had the SAME faulty part number and the SAME problem with no recall- bastards). Should get it done free at your dealer.

The problem is grease contamination of the contacts in the turn signal switch. You can go to the dealer and spend $300+ or you can fix it yourself for the cost of 3 feet of scotch tape and about 4 q-tips. You will need a Torx T-20 and T-10 screwdriver as well. I fixed mine in less than 30 minutes based on the instructions found on the web. Go to http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/sh...+switch&page=2 . Sorry if it's not an exact link but I got the directions and pictures on that site to fix mine. Good luck!!!!

Both answers, hazard switch and turn signal switch, can be correct. The hazard switch for the 2000 and 2001 Grand Am's were recalled and caused the annoying clicking. I had that done on my car and that solved the problem for 6 years. When the problem started again I put a new hazard switch in but it did not fix the problem. Cleaning out the grease which had many metal filings and replacing it with vaseline fixed the problem. It is relatively easy repair.

What do you do if the key wont come out of the ignition on a 4Runner?

I know this has been awhile so you probably have it fixed but Ill take a stab at it anyway. The locking mechanism can fail and the only thing you can do is call a lock smith. But, before you do look at 2 things. Several models have a lock button on the steering column that you must push to release the key. This can loose a pin and not work. Also it needs to be in the off position. You might need to remove the cover to see it. Some have an ACC position is is all the way counter clock wise. You need to be in the off position one click in the clockwise direction to get the key out. Lastly if the steering column is locked it can have pressure on the key not allowing it to move into the right position to come out. Just apply a turning force against the wheel and then try and turn it.

Where is the crank sensor located on a 1989 Cutlass Supreme 3.1L?

I just replaced the crankshaft position locator (crank sensor) on my 89 Cutlass Supreme SL. Although I don't know if this will help since mine was a 2.8 L V6 (Eng Code W), but mine was located between the oil pan and transmission pan on the backside of the engine, just above the oil pan. In other words, its between the engine and the firewall on the bottom side.

You have to crawl under the car..... BE SURE TO USE JACK STANDS AND DONT TRUST JUST A JACK. It required a 5/16 closed end wrench. Use the closed end wrench to avoid stripping the bolt head. Its very tight in there. I dropped that wrench on my face at least 20 times. Once you get the one bolt unbolted, GENTLY pry it out with a very small screwdriver. Be super careful not to break it off while prying it out.

I was told if it breaks off, there is nothing you can do except knock it through and remove the oil pan to retrieve it. And you cant remove the oilpan without pulling the engine. Once I had it unbolted, it would turn, with a rag, but wouldn't pop out. It took quite a bit to get it out.

I think (so far) this has solved my problem with the car dieing and not starting for 2 hours. I also replaced the ignition module, which was also a pain but it was located on the front side of the engine.

Where is the therostat on a 2000 Pontiac grand am 2.4 twin cam motor?

if you look under the exhaust manifold there is a metal pipe that runs between the oil pan and the frame. the metal hose connects to the thermostat housing under the manifold. you must remove the exhaust manifold heat shield on the top of manifold to get to the 2 8mm bolts to remove the thermostat. make sure you take note of the direction of flow from the old thermostat.
