I work for cummins diesel and we use warm water and cascade. You need to make sure that you mix it before you put it in the radiator otherwise you will just get a lot of bubbles. let you truck run for about 30 minutes even drive it a round for an hour or so that will break up all the grim in you coolant system. Then you need to drain. Put just plain water in and run. This work really well. Yes cascade does do the dirty work>

Either there is a pinhole leak in the radiator allowing hot coolant to escape that then vaporizes into steam when it hits the atmosphere... or there is something spilled on the radiator that steams when the radiator gets hot. Engine overheats When a car or truck overheats idling, in town, on the highway, while towing, etc. it is important to find out the reason to prevent engine damage. First, with the engine cold, make sure the radiator is full of coolant; if it is low, fill it and keep the radiator cap off while the engine idles to insure all air is bled out of the system ( air trapped in the system can cause overheating also). Check the coolant level daily; if the coolant goes down without visible leaks, it may be a head gasket starting to leak which will also cause the heater to blow cold air due to the lack of available coolant. If the coolant stays full, but the car continues to overheat, the next step is to replace the thermostat in the engine and flush the cooling system if that has not been done over the last few years.Buy a thermostat at a parts store and a PRESTONE flush kit which has excellent directions on the package.After completing these steps and the vehicle still overheats, have your cooling fan sensor/switch ( if equipped)checked out to insure it is coming on. Water pumps are seldom the cause as they are mechanical and will continue to work until their bearings give out. Finally, the radiator itself is often the problem as it tends to build up corrosion internally which prevents it from transfering engine heat to the coolant. Remove it and have it 're-cored'. One of these steps will solve the problem.

Thermostat is located on the engine end of the lower (yes, I said lower) radiator hose. The housing is plastic, so work carefully. It would be a good idea to use a genuine Subaru thermostat and rubber O-ring gasket, as this will give the correct temperature. I am surprised your thermostat went bad-- usually the factory Subie thermostats last 10-15 years. To replace thermostat, drain radiator, then remove lower hose at engine end (first green shower), remove the bolts securing the lower hose connector to the engine and remove the connector (second green shower), then pull the thermostat and rubber ring out with pliers (third green shower). Installation is reverse of removal, and there is no gasket on the thermostat cover to speak of-- the O- ring around the thermostat does all the sealing. Remember to refill radiator with care, and use the air "burp" screw mounted on the radiator top, opposite the fill pipe.

It is under the pass headlight, under the bumper cover.you have to remove the whole battery assembly to get to it then feel for it in the fender wall use a small 8mm wrench or 1/4 inch drive socket set granted how rusted your battery hold down bolts are it should take about two hours taking your time its very tight fit to get to but, manageable good luck!
If you can't see where its coming from, it may be a cracked head, or a bas headgasket. Also, when you add water to the coolant tank, it doesn't immediately go into the radiator. After the car sits a while, the radiator starts to cool, creating a vacuum. Water/coolant is then pulled into the radiator from the coolant tank.
