Hey Willie==If it comes out the cap and not the overflow jug, the cap is faulty plus what is causing it to get hot. 'Check the fans for proper operation. If it isn't smoking white smoke, it probably isn't the head gaskets. A stuck thermostat will also cause it ot overheat. Actually, this is to be expected when one considers that ethylene glycol, the principal component of most antifreezes, freezes at 8 degrees above zero, Fahrenheit. It is only when water is added that the freezing point is depressed. The freezing point of an ethylene glycol and water mixture drops rapidly as the concentration of glycol is increased to a mixture of about 60% antifreeze and 40% water. Around that point, an abrupt turnabout occurs, and as more antifreeze is added, the freezing point rises almost as fast as it had previously dropped. It's clearly a case of what you don't know can hurt you, but I have never seen an antifreeze container with an explanatory note to this effect. It must have leakage somewhere. When it gets cold the antifreeze contracs. That is why there is a bottle next to the radiator that has two marks COLD and hot. the level should be in between these. If it is not and way off then you have a leak somewhere. Leak may be small, may be in the hadgasket (no good), look under the car to see if any green or colr fluid is under overnite. Did you unscrew the radiator cap and forget to tighten it roccetly?

Yes, you can. Depending on how much you put in, it will change the boiling point of the coolant. If it's just a little bit, you shouldn't affect it that much. If it's a lot, you have to watch the temperature more often. For best results, you need a 50/50 mixture of coolant & water.

If that's where the leak is coming from then that's what would need to be fixed. If money is a significant issue they make pretty good 'stop leak' additives that you can pick up from any auto parts store. If the leak isn't a gusher that is. There's a powdered metal one that I think is especially good at sealing minor leaks. Might be worth trying this first before spending the bucks on a new radiator. As the counterman at any autoparts store to recommend one. The orange coolant in my 99 passat tends to clot up when it hits the open air and can seal itself in alot of cases. I have a leak around a coolant hose that has sealed itself and even the dealer said it looks like it will be ok. If you have a leak even with this type coolant it must be pretty bad, unless its just a leaky hose and in that case your mechanic is trying to hose you.
== == it would depend where it was leaking coolant from. have a close look at your radiator, if it is showing signs of leakage have a scratch around with a wire brush, if it is only one small hole, a good stop leak can fix it (or a good soldiering job, which is more effective, & cheaper) but if your radiator has many holes starting to appear,, replace it fast.
check around your hoses, & water pump, these are the places it could also be leaking, when its all fixed & stopped leaking, use a good antifreeze radiator conditioner, this will help protect it from deteriorating in the future.

in some cases the antifreeze will change consistency, it would turn into a "muddy" like substance. As long as the antifreeze you are using is ethylene glycol based, as most are,(Prestone, Peak, Zerex, private label brands) EXCEPT the Sierra brand, they are totally compatible. If your cooling system has any darkness to it that indicates it is time for a cooling system flush.

Even after the radiator is drained there is still about 3-4 quarts in the engine and heater core lines. to completely replace all coolant you will need to flush the system with water and consider the remaining water in the system into your 50-50 mix ratio.

Remove top plate that holds radiator in (keep hold of rubber end caps) doing this first allows the radiator to move a bit aids in next step. Remove bolts that attach A/C core lift up on a/c core to unseat the dowel pins.Radiator should pull out with a little coxing. When installing new radiator be sure to use new fittings put teflon tape on transmission lines. replace rest in reverse order. Be sure to bleed air out of system by cracking the bleeder on the coolant rail while engine is cold wait for it to start spitting coolant then close it. recheck coolant after engine cools off again and Viola.

usually after the car has had a chance to cool down, the hose should be "spongey" when it is grasped, but after attaining operating temperature, the hose should become firm as the cooling system presurizes up. it will remain so, again, until the engine/cooling system cools down. Dont ever open the radiator cap when the engine has been run to operating temperature or not had a chance to cool down adequately, the pressurized system is very hot and you risk serious injury!!!

on the thermostat housing on top there is a metric Allen screw.take off the radiator cap and then unscrew the Allen screw until coolant begins to come out of the hole .top off and your good to go
Im not going to erase that guys answer cause that is true, but im some cases those things wont budge at all, so if that is the case with your Dodge Spirit just keep the fluids full and in a day or two the coolant system will aventually bleed itself... that's what I always do insted of messing with that screw and it works everytime.

Unlike other cars' drain plugs that look like WING NUTS, this looks like a fat plastic screw that is driven (and loosened) by a big fat Phillips screwdriver.
Another tip: It is almost flush with the bottom of the radiator surface (that is, it does not stick out, it is kind of recessed), and it goes in and comes out in the direction of straight up to the sky (unlike some that unscrew on an invisible line that is parallel to the ground and in the direction of out in front of the car).
Another tip: To get at the drain plug, your fat PHILLIPS SCREW DRIVER has to get around a piece of plastic moulding that is just beneath the radiator. You will approach the drain plug from the aft side of this moulding. To make it easier, melt a 1/2-inch hole in that molding by heating a fat bolt on the kitchen stove, held by a pair of vice grips, until the bolt is red hot. Then walk out to the garage, lay down with your feet out the front of the vehicle, and on the passenger (right) side of the radiator, push the hot bolt thru the soft plastic in a pre-selected location that you have confirmed - with a flashlight - is just under the drain plug. Now the process of unscrewing that plug will be a 10-second job and very, very easy. Or, if you don't want to melt that access hole, use a short stubby 3-inch long PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER instead of a standard 7- or 9-inch one.
One cause could be a plugged heater core. Another cause could be coolant passages in the engine being blocked. Check the fan to make sure it is coming on at the correct temperature.
