Excessive smoke from exhaust 1997 Saturn?
When the smoke occurs helps give the answer. If you get it all the time, that usually means worn piston rings. That costs a lot to fix, but as long as you keep oil in your engine (tot the proper dipstick level), you can delay the repair for a while. Smoke that only occurs when you're decellerating means bad valve seals. That costs less to fix than rings, and can be delayed in th e same way. Hope this helps! Paul
I had this same problem when i bought my cavalier. I had the ignition lock\key part changed and I changed the ignition switch myself and it worked fine. Now I have yet another problem.
How do you change the oil on a 2001 Saturn ls2?
Have to place car on service ramps or up on a hoist. Finding the drain plug is not that hard ..but the oil filter is enclosed within a canister. that has a large nut (used to remove canister) part of the canisters housing.
So once you remove the filters canister housing from engine case you must remove the filter from within the canister
Major problem is making sure not to damage the canisters o ring gasket/seal and to align it correctly before mounting.....
with all the trouble this style canisters caused its a wonder they brought them back again
It is more messy than a standard autos oil filter to change too...
sorry could not locate any photos to refer you to
Not even the shop manual..
good luck.......... Monte

What causes gas fumes in Saturn 2001 L-Series?
Is it gas fumes or exhaust? The only cause for a fuel smell inside the vehicle would be a fuel leak, so check the lines, tank, etc. for that. While you're underneath, check the exhaust. Sometimes exhaust can have a similar odor to fuel, so check for exhaust leaks under the vehicle and also check your rear door seals and trunk seals for damage or poor seal. Sometimes exhaust can be sucked in through poor seals. If you are unwilling or unable to get under the vehicle to check for exhaust and/or fuel leaks, take the vehicle to a shop and explain your concerns and ask that it be inspected. Breathing either fuel vapors or exhaust can have serious health and safety risks, so be proactive, do something about it before bad things happen.

How do you remove a battery from a 2001 Saturn L200?
First, in front of the battery, toward the bumper, is a narrow long black box. It's attached to a bracket that you will need to move to be able to get your battery out. There is a little catch on the back of the box, toward the battery, once that's free from the body of the bracket, then just pull up or wiggle it from side to side, till it comes off. Just as an FYI, there are 2 wiring clips attached to it. (Do not unhook them, nor do you need to remove the top of the box, also - it takes a bit of wiggling and pulling to remove it) ) . Then after that is off, there's a 1/2 inch bolt that holds the bracket against the lip of the battery. It is in right in front of the battery on the bumper side. Uust loosen it and slide it back, then your battery should be able to slide back. Remove the cables from the terminals, and then you're good to pull the battery out.
A P0442 indicates a EVAP System small leak. While this may be caused by a loose or worn gas cap, as is often the case, it usually points to 1 of 2 other problems. The "small leak" diagnostic indicates a leak as small as .020 inch in diameter which means it could be a leaking line within the evap system. It can also be a stuck open EVAP Vent Valve or a faulty Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor. This diagnostic has to be done by a shop with a scan tool capable of reading Tank Pressure voltage and/or performing a EVAP System Smoke test to find the leak.

Is a 2002 Saturn L200 2.2L Double Overhead cam Eng a zero Clearance Eng?
"Zero clearance engine" and "interference engine" are terms used to describe engines in which open valves occupy space that the piston will be occupying once it gets to the top of it's stroke. Valve timing is critical, and valves must be closed by the time the piston reaches the top of it's cycle; that's where the camshaft timing is critical.
Most engines use timing gears or timing chains, but many of the newer, dual camshaft engines use timing belts. Timing belts wear out, typically before 100,000 miles. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be much before 100,000 miles.
The Saturn L series V6 uses a timing belt. Most other Saturn's used a timing chain.
The Saturn L series operators manual suggests that the timing belt be replaced at 100,000 miles. Follow your operators manual recommendations to prevent timing belt failure.
NOTE!
If the timing belt fails on a typical overhead cam engine, the piston will come in contact with an open valve and the engine will be completely destroyed.

How do you program a Saturn L200 keyless remote?
There are two levels of "programming" of a Saturn keyless remote:
1. If you are just replacing the battery, follow the instructions on the inside of the remote.
2. If you old remote has failed and you want to use a replacement remote, you have to take it to an authorized GM dealer; only THEIR computer can program the replacement remote to your vehicle.
3. Try looking for someone with a TECH2 scanner that's what the GM guys would use, not OBD2 like they have at auto parts stores.
4. Find an auto locksmith. I found a local one at autolocksmithfinder.us I had mine done for almost half the price the dealer wanted
How do you clear the codes on 2003 Saturn L200?
The onboard computer clears the codes whenever it detects that the fault has been repaired. For example, if the computer detects a faulty oxygen sensor, the MIL (malfunction indicator light) is turned on to indicate the fault. It is then possible to use a code scanner to retrieve the code from the computer, so you can know what the computer has detected. Once the computer senses that the oxygen sensor has been replaced, it will turn off the MIL.
Note: the oxygen sensor was just an example, there may be many reasons that the computer will turn the MIL on, and you need to use the scanner to read the code.
There are a few intermittent codes that can be cleared, and to do that you'll need a little better code scanner. The better models give the option to clear the code, but if the problem still exists, the code will come right back on as soon as the computer detects the fault.
