Serpentine Belts

A serpentine belt is a single, continuous belt utilized in driving devices – such as power steering pump, alternator and others – in an automotive engine. First used by Mercedes-Benz, the belt is more efficient than the older multiple belt system.

What is a belt idler pulley?

Belts have to make at least a 180° wrap around engine components. To do that, they sometimes have to place an "idler roller" under the component before they can route the belt to the next component. That idler roller doesn't power anything. It just keeps the belts wrapped properly around the preceding pulley. The roller has a bearing in it and sometimes that bearing wears out.

How do you reroute a serpentine belt on a 95 Lumina APV to eliminate a lock AC Compressor?

You can't reroute it with the existing belt. You could, I suppose, install a smaller belt that would work. Try a belt for this same model engine, in which the vehicle did not have A/C. That should work.

<<Palmboy - 051605>>

For a 1994 Lumina APV (3.8 L), I bypassed the A/C compressor with a replacement serpentine belt that was 73" in length for ~$21 @ Advanced Discount Autoparts (original belt is ~102"). My problem was an A/C clutch that was making a grinding noise.

I determined the new belt length using a piece of cord to measure the new (required) belt length by routing it around the engine accessory components (i.e., Power Steering Pump, Tensioner, Alternator, Water Pump, etc.). I purchased two belts, one @ just over the measured lentgh (73") and one @ under (72") - then returned the 72" belt.

This seemed to work fine (so-far-so-good) for getting my vehicle back on the road without the risk of the A/C clutch siezing and throwing the belt.

How do you loosen the belt tensioner on a 1998 Ford Mustang?

there should be a hole on the tensioner bar that fits a 3/8 ratchet. using the ratchet rotate the bar counter-clockwise(on a 2000 mustang) to loosen the belt.

How do you go about changing an alternator belt on a 92 civic?

Be PatientI'm now working on my son's 1995 Honda Civic LX with a 1.5L Engine 4-door LX model. (I understand that Civic 92-95 are the same) His alternator belt broke so I figured it would be a good father-son first car learning experience for him and a simple task for me. (wrong...).

Since the alternator belt is the closest to the engine of the three belts on the crackshaft pulley, I started by removing the Power Steering pump belt since it is the furthest away. Loosen the pivot pulley at the bottom, then the adjusting pulley at the top. The wing nut screw at the top can then be removed and the belt will come loose. That is where simple ends.

To be able to see anything from the top, remove all the bolts from of the power steering pump and move it out of the way. One can then clearly see the tensioner pulley in between the crackshaft pulley and the A/C clutch pulley.

We removed the driver's side tire and plastic wheel well to see the pulleys and belts more clearly. From underneath the wheel well is also how we first located the A/C tensioner pulley adjusting screw, which adjusts from the top IF YOU CAN FIND IT.

This screw is a 10mm hex head screw which is between the engine and the back of the the A/C tensioner pulley. (Get your Mag-lite out) You'll need a few extension bars on your ratchet to reach it. When you start loosening the adjusting screw, if you are lucky, it will loosen the belt and the pulley will move lower. In our case, since corrosion and dirt were everywhere, we took some WD-40 and Blaster (top and bottom) and hardly loosened it up. We had to pound on the top of the extensions with the 10mm socket connected to get the pulley to move down and fully loosen the belt.

Here is the best part.....When you go to remove the A/C belt, the motor mount prevents the belt from coming out. Yes!... you have to remove the outer nut on the motor mount by starting with a 19mm socket, followed by a deep well 14 mm socket to remove the steel bar that goes through the middle of the motor mount rubber (we don't have a deep well 14mm so I might unbolt the whole motor mount and slide the belts through.

We stopped for the night at this point, but the rest should be simple once the motor mount is out of the way. We will be changing all the belts.

When to replace a serpentine belt in a Chevy s-10?

Most cars and trucks today have what is called a serpentine belt which runs most accessories. They are very dependable and usually easy to replace. To decide if your belt needs replacing, simply look at the grooved side of the belt to see if it is cracking badly. A couple of cracks every 3 inches is normal, but if you see cracks every 1-2 inches I would recommend that you replace it. On most cars and trucks the procedure is basically the same. First off, get the correct belt by bringing your cars VIN number to the parts store(located on your cars dashboard) the parts store may need it. If there are two choices, get them both so you can complete the repair. Once you have the correct belt, take a minute to review how the belt runs across the pulleys and also check to see if your car/ truck has a underhood diagram of belt routing in case you need it. In most cases you will need a socket wrench or breaker bar with either a 3/8" and /or 1/2" head on it and possibly a short extension. Some models may require a wrench of these similar sizes. Now that you are ready to go to work, you will need to find the spring loaded tensioner which is generally located near the top of the belt path; it usually has a shinny pulley on it. Look at the tensioner and insert the tool into it and apply opposing pressure to release the belt. Now, simply install the new belt making sure it fits into the grooves on all the pulleys. Start the car to check it and you are done and you saved yourelf some money!

What are you doing wrong when you loosen the tension bolt on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 6 cylinder Sport and nothing happens?

Look for a mounting bolt that needs to be loosen to allow the alternator, or another component that the belt powers, to pivot. They are sometimes hard to locate.

Can you bypass the ac pulley when changing a serpentine belt in a 96 Plymouth grand voyager se 3.3 l if so how long should the belt be?

You can almost always bypass the A/C Compressor in any car. Most of them cam with or without A/C. :-) OPTION 1) Call the parts store and ask for the serpentine belt of a 96 PLymouth Grand Voyager SE. If they ask "with or without A/C" then say "without" and it should be the belt you need. If they don't ask, then they never built that car without A/C so go to option #2. (Note: An SE may just be an options package that includes A/C so you may want to ask for base model parts) OPTION 2) note the pulleys on either side of the A/C compressor. Hold a string from the center of one to the other. Note that length. Now, holding the string in the same 2 positions, follow the path of the belt around the A/C compressor. Note that length. Subtract the first measurement from the last and go to parts store and get 3 belts that are the same width and thickness as the original. Get one with the length you derived in the string test and one a little shorter and one a little longer. Hopefully one will work just right and you can take the other 2 back. :-) **** I JUST DID THIS TODAY ***** I drove my 1998 Voyager SE 3.3L v6 to a parts store to hunt for a belt without A/C. The replacement that is in ALL parts store computers have the WRONG ONE for this to work, but it is POSSIBLE. the belt size is 860KP. it may have more numerals in front of that, but if you get a belt that size, you can bypass the A/C (which just fell apart; broken brackets, etc -- American auto engineering). The major difference in the routing is THE WATER PUMP WILL BE DIRECTLY DRIVEN FROM THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY AND THE GROOVES OF THE BELT WILL BE FACING THE WATER PUMP'S SMOOTH PULLEY; WHICH IS OPPOSITE FROM WITH THE A/C. Keeping that in mind, you'll have a tight enough fit until you can figure out how youre gonna repair the original problem, but this will make the van more than a ton of cheap metalurgy (sp) than it is. I love my Voyager, but it should have been made my more reliable parts and metals. Everythings gone aluminum, just think of whats riding on your tires (including you). And space is limited under the hood, as if this thing wasnt designed to break. Truth is, its not designed to be fixed; I call these 60 month cars, "throwaways."

Where can you find the schematics for serpentine belt for 2004 dodge 2500 hemi?

Pop the hood. Look at the metal frame, just ahead of the radiator shroud. You should see an EMBLEM describing how to install it.

Serpentine belt diagram for 1998 expedition?

Serpentine Belt

Under the hood should be a diagram of the belt, this is your best reference without the service manual. All you have to determine is which direction to rotate the belt tensioner, and then put the belt back on as shown in the diagram.

If it is not you can run down to your nearest auto parts store and they can print it out for you or just buy the Hayes or chilton manual on your car. It only cost a few bucks and it well helps you out later down the line if something else brakes.

How do you replace a serpentine belt on a 1988 celebrity?

To replace the serpentine belt on a 1988 Celebrity:

1. There should be a routing diagram in the engine compartment. If there is no routing diagram take careful note of how the belt to be replaced is routed.

2. Use a suitable tool to release the belt tensioner, then slide the belt off of the idler pulley and then off of the other pulleys.

3. Route the new belt on all the pulleys to the tensioner.

4. Release the tensioner and slide the belt over the idler pulley.

How tight to tighten serpentine belt?

Your car most probably has an automatic belt tensioner that keeps the belt tight and in proper spec. If the belt has too much play in it, the belt tensioner will need to be replaced.

Ok you put in a new timing belt and set the shaft to tdc marks which are at about 1 o'clock on a 1999 Hyundai accent but when you turn it over its a rough idol?

The cams need to be lined up at their respective marks also, if this was done then look for loose connections, bad plugs, clogged pcv, or possible damage to the engine when the other belt broke. Normally after you put back the timing belt, you have to check or adjust the ignition timing. If timing is not right a rough idle is the cause.
