What is the average engine life of a Subaru Forrester?

If one takes promotes good 'care and feeding' of their car, it can last almost indefinetely. This means religiously changing the oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles at the bare minimum. Auto manufacturers are now promoting less frequent oil changes, but you will be better off in the long run when changing this at 3,000 miles instead ot 5,000 or 7,500 miles.

Never abuse the engine by constant high speed shifting or high rpm revs all the time - just drive normally, but not slow like gramma moses either. If you take care of your engine, it will take care of you, too.

I change the engine oil and filter every 3,000 miles and never rev the engine hard until it has warmed up to the normal operating temperature.

My Subaru Forester S-Turbo 2001 Coming up to 100,000 miles and no sign of any engine wear, knocks or blue smoke.

Providing that you also change the cam belt at the recommended service interval 250,000 miles should easily be achievable.

I am not sure on bodywork or suspension though as suspension is getting a little soft and droops at the back end.

Is a Subaru worth buying if it has 130000 miles on it?

yes as long as the car is still in good running condition. even though it has a high mileage. check some car classified sites to help you more compare used car prices.

How do you clear Subaru trouble codes?

There are two sets of leads under the dash, steering column side, one set black, one set green. connect black leads ignition on, but do not start the engine! this will allow the engine management light to blink out the code (long blink = 10 short blink =1)

connect green leads, drive car for 1 min at over 10 mph, stop and hold car revs at 2000rpm

you will then get four long blinks from engine light, disconnect leads and problem is cleared from memory!

mine turned out to be a sticky waste gate!

oh and if engine light is on very often, car will not rev past 4200 rpm as it goes into defense mode if it senses a problem!!

What is cost of replacing 3 cylinder on a subaru?

We do not have the facility to do repairs here. So, since I won't be repairing your vehicle anything I tell you will have absolutely no value. If I say $300 but someone who actually does the work says $1200, what have you gained? And do I understand that you are asking to replacing a single cylinder sleeve? Why?

It is unlikely that replacing a single cylinder sleeve will solve whatever issue you have. Can you tell me how much I charge per hour? If you can do that and give me a hint as to what engine and model year I can give you an approximate price on a complete engine rebuild.

What is the average engine life of a Subaru?

I have a 2004 Outback , oil change every 3,000 miles lasted 6 years / 78,000 miles before needing a new engine. There is an inherent design flaw in subaru engines. They use aluminum heads with valve guide inserts. With the expansion and contraction of the head caused by heating and cooling , the valve guides work loose and eventually cause the piston to hit the head. This in turn causes stress on the big end bearings causing failure.

The combination of these events means that a new engine is required.

The use of aluminum heads in the Subaru engines have reliability concerns due to the shifting of the valve guides, causing the pistons to hit the valves and cause catastrophic engine failure. This is caused by the fact that the aluminum head expands and contract at a different rate to the valve guide insert causing the valve guide to eventually become loose.

Due to manufacturer quality issues certain engines are more prone to dropping a valve seat during operaiton. This usually occurs when the engine is hot, from heat distortion, due to Aluminum's ability to expand 5 times the rate of steel. The aluminum material that holds the valve guide will expand and hold the valve guide with less pressure. As the valve guide becomes less restrained, stress from regular operation can work it lose completely, disbanding it from the aluminum head. Once this occurs the movement of the valve will usually break the valve guide insert into pieces, effectively eliminating any compression in the corresponding cylinder, and creating a lot of damage from the loose metal debris inside the combustion chamber.

The old subaru designs are probably ok, just the new ones with aluminum heads are the ones to avoid. This is also reflected in consumer reports as major engine failure in cars 5-6 years old or older

Subaru engines will last several hundred thousand miles as long as you take care of it. ( Change the oil regularly. REGULARLY!!! as with any other motor.) Mine lasted for 199,640 miles and ran great until someone totaled the car for me!!

How do you reset subaru check engine light?

Most auto parts stores have a check engine light reader that you can borrow for free to read the code and also to reset the check engine light. If they are not busy, they may even do it for you for free. Support your local parts store! Worst case: Take it to your dealer or buy a check engine light reader that can also reset it.

87 Subaru GL w vacuum heater controls Mine will not switch from bi-level heat or defrost... how do I get the dash off to fix these controls?

probably you have a disconnected vacuum line. that line runs from the passenger side of the intake to the firewall and across the firewall and through the firwewall in fron of the drivers door by the windshield wiper motor. it then runs under the steerring column and joins some mechanisms above the accelorator pedal. when you find it and join it your car will run better too.

How to Replace the fuel pump in a 1992 Subaru liberty?

Same as Legacy saloon? Bring rear seat backs forward. Remove circular panel under mat behind right rear passengers seat. Brush away any debris which might fall into the tank as the pump is removed. Remove everything incl three hose clamps and lift pump assembly out carefully. Do not scrape metal on metal due risk of spark. May have to turn it a little to get it out but absolutely no force is required. If faulty replace fuel pump in the removed assembly with Walbro Subaru kit as offers better fuel flo consistency over full rev range compared to manufacturers original which pegs out at higher rpm. Replace same procedure but in reverse.

Why won't brakes bleed out on a 98 subaru loyale it has no fluid leaking anywhere and i have bled them about 7 times and they still lose pressure?

The only other thing I can think of is a problem with the master cylinder. Something inside that isn't holding the pressure as it should.

Subaru Forester will not start?

I wouldn't have any idea where to start. My recommendation would be to do what I did when my Outback just quit running in my driveway. Call the local garage for a tow truck. This forum doesn't lend itself to the lengthy conversation necessary to narrow in on your problem.
