When were the first automobile turn signals used?
In 1925, Edgar A. Walz, Jr. secured a patent for the first modern automobile turn signal[citation needed]. He marketed the device to all the major automobile manufacturers but none indicated an interest[citation needed]. Fourteen years later the patent expired;[citation needed] the modern turn signal was first generally offered by major automobile manufacturers in 1939. Today, turn signals are required on all vehicles that are driven on public roadways in most countries. Alternative systems of hand signals were used earlier, and they are still common for bicycles. Hand signals are also sometimes used when regular vehicle lights are malfunctioning.

Change rear turn signal on 1999 Chevy Tahoe?
you have to take apart the light assembly. open tail gate/barn doors to back. you will see 2 black covers, probably about 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter. pull the plugs off. in the holes you will see 2 screws (make sure you put something that can catch the screws, ie like a piece of duct tape or paper shaped in a half pipe just in case the screws drop). take out both screws. gently move the light fixture, you might have to tap on the corner of the light (near the body of the truck). the fixture swings out from the back away from the truck (have 2 little hinges on opposite side of the screws). remove electrical connection, remove 2 screws. take needle noise pliers to the base of the light bulb, and gently wiggle back and forth. you will see 2 little clips on each side of the bulb, DO NOT TRY TO PRY THE BULB OUT. get replacement and put into socket. install is reverse instructions as removal of light assembly

This is for the 95-97 Contour. 98+ are different, because the light housing changed completely.
1. Open the hood.
2. In each front corner of the hood, there is a torx bolt, head about the size of a nickel. Removing this one bolt allows you to remove the corner marker/turn signal housing.
3. Once the housing is free, you have access to the back of the bulb holder. If I recall correctly, it's a half-twist to remove, but I'm not sure. Could just be barbed clips, or something. Anyway, from here should be no problem to figure out how to remove and replace the bulb.
4. Replace corner marker/turn signal housing, and re-install torx bolt. That's it!

Double check the wiring diagrams for your vehicle but it's probable the flashers and signals use the same relay to function. The wiring for your flashers will go through the hazard switch which is where the malfunction is. If you replace the switch your problem should be solved.

The relay signal is found in the glove compartment, pops right out.

Don't be misled. The glove compartment in a 1996 Blazer that has AC only contains relays and does not drop down with a simple release mechanism. In this vehicle, the lower dash panels do actually need to be removed in order to access the flasher. You'll need Torx bits and hex sockets to accomplish.
