Hey, it's easy. Put emergency brake on. Open the trunk, look to the left and take off the round piece holding the mechanism. Just turn the little screw thingy counterclockwise--then go up front and unlatch and pull your roof down manually---then go back and tighten up the screw clockwise. When I found out how much it cost to replace the mechanism so it would work automatically, I figured manual's much easier and cheaper!

I've had luck with having someone press and hold the top up button while manually pulling the top up. We found the top on my friends car could also be lowered this way - by holding the top down button and manually lowering the top.
If you open the trunk and look on the left side, you will see the cover. This contains the motor for the top. There should be a round plastic cover, if you pull this off you will see the motor. There will be a handle, which you want to turn left to release the pressure in the motor, this will let you manually lift and close the top or open. If the motor is okay and you can use it, then you must turn this handle to the right, in order for the pump to pressurize.

If the starter has been grinding against the flywheel for quite some time there is a GOOD chance that the flywheel is stripped. On the other hand, if it just started and it's engaged thoroughly in the past, you probably just have a bad starter bendix. Pull the starter then use a screwdriver or some other tool for prying to slowly turn the flywheel and inspect each tooth of the flywheel. Look for any that are significantly worn down or missing. If ANY fit that category you will need to pull the engine or transmission and replace the flywheel or flexplate depending on whether it's a manual transmission or an automatic.
