Why does the heater in a 1997 Saturn SL series blow cold air?

In most cases when a vehicle heater that has been working properly in the past begins to blow cold air the cooling system is low on coolant.

It could also mean that your heater core is clogged. A good coolant system flush might take care of this, otherwise you may have to have it replaced.

I changed out thermostat in Z71 Suburban and heater still won't get hot why?

Check for a heater flow valve in the heater hose they can rust shut easily it is a valve in the heater hose that opens when you turn on the heat and shuts when its not in use, if not then probably the core is plugged a radiator flush might help but you may need to have it cleaned and repaired.

Why wont your heater work for a 2002 vw passat v6 36 valve the ac works but no heat?

It could be a few different problems: the first being that you have an air bubble, the second being that the system needs to be flushed or third that your heater core is bad. To test this start the car and turn the heater off. Then run the car until it is at normal running temperature. Once you have done this turn on the defroster on high if the temperature is hot at first and then cool then you need to do one of the above fixes. Start with the easy one and move to the more difficult/expensive one. Good luck.

What cause 1993 grand prix se to blow cold air on defroster setting?

A water thermostat stuck open. Air in the heater hose lines (caused by low radiator coolant). Air temperature (mechanical) control cable not opening the heater hose water valve (under hood).

How long should you take to warm up your car?

Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn't "warm up" your car's engine before driving it; I used to do this (mainly to heat the interior), but it's actually bad for the engine and fuel economy. 30 seconds of idle should be enough to get the oil warmed up to proper working temp, so drive immediately, but GENTLY for the first few minutes--yes, you'll be colder than if you leave the heater going before getting in, but your engine (and fuel tank) will thank you. Keep in mind that your brakes need time to warm up--another good reason to drive easy when you first get going. Also, at low temperature your battery will have a lower starting power; if you have trouble starting the car, try turning off the heater, radio, lights, and other accessories (and unplug any lighter-plug devices) while starting the engine.

----------Original Answer Below----------

When its cold out, Give your car a few mins to get the molecules reacting faster in your oils, The oil works best when its at its warmer temps. Oil thickens in winter. Today its -2 degrees here this morning, so If you live in the country as I do, Warm it til warm air comes from the heater. Winter time is the time your thermostat sticks the worse, and could leave you stranded in the middle of no place. People die trying to walk in these conditions. Don't take a chance on getting stranded in the middle of winter. Good Luck and Take care {R}

Heat in car sometimes does not work?

Check the following..............

1. Coolant level.

2. Thermostat.

3. Inside controls cables, vacuum and actuators.

Positive the compressor in 2000 Chevy Prizm is shot as the engine does not bog down when turned on and nothing but warm or hot air blows out How do you replace it and what kind of coolant is used?

There is a good chance that the compressor isn't damaged at all. All modern automotice A/C systems have a low pressure cut-off switch to prevent the compressor from running in the event that the refrigerant runs low, or completely out. Grab a can of R-134a refrigerant (they sell them with the gauge built on to the can these days) and hook it up. Turn the A/C on in the car and begin filling the system, once the pressure reaches a high enough level in the refrigerant system, the compressor should kick on (you'll hear it click and start to run). That should answer both questions. :)

How hard is it to replace the heater core of 1994 Volvo 940 wagon. The blower seems to work but only blows cold air. Thanks RF?

Maybe this could help you start to rebuild your dashboard.

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Cooling.html#HeaterCoreLeaks

Volvo 940 is prey easy to dismantel compared with other cars.

Added by Al Check the valve first and make sure you have coolant flow. Both hoses that go into the dash should get hot. Make sure the controls work, doors etc. Heater cores usually fail by leaking. If it's not leaking try flushing the cooling system.

Why does the heater only blow air when the car is moving?

most likely cause will be a faulty fan speed resistor.shouldnt cost more than $50 to replace

Why wont heater in car turn on?

more info needed Fan or actual heat or flow to floor Year make and model of vehicle ect... Blown fuse, it's broken, fan not blowing the air in, cooler or battery unit not on or working. Idk. Not enough information.

Why Heater on 2001 Chevy Silverado blows hot air all time?

I have a 2001 "Tahoe" that was doing the same thing. If you had the A/C on and moved the temperature just a little towards HOT, it put out heat, wide open. You could not turn the HEAT off until you cut the vehicle off and let it sit for a while. Then the temperature motor would "reset" itself. I ended up replacing the temperature motor under the dash, the one on the bottom side. My vehicle did NOT have "dual temperature settings". Just one knob you turned from Blue to Red. This fixed the problem. The part# that was on my old temp. motor / actuator was 52474810.

Why would a car heater stop working and just blow cold air?

There are several reasons for your heater to blow cold air, the heater belnd door being stuck, no thermostat, low coolant, diagnosis is key.

If you have a 3.1 V6, you may need to bleed the coolant system. In front of the engine passenger side, you have a bleeder screw, with the engine off, surge tank cap off, open the valve until coolant flows smoothly, close the valve, check coolant, add if needed.

it's a $5.00 thermastat The problem could also be low coolant level. If the coolant gets too low it will not pass through the heater core and therefore will not heat the cabin air.

You may need to have your heater box inspected. It is possible for the flapper to be jammed or broken. It is a big fix so make sure to check coolant levels and leaks as well.

Why might your car heater not be blowing real hot?

Check your antifreeze. When you remove the radiator cap (make sure the engine is cool) there should be some antifreeze at the top of the radiator neck. If you don't see any, then the level may be too low and you'll have to add some antifreeze.

Why does my car heater work but only blow cold air and how can I fix it?

Actually, the heater is not working . . . only the fan. When heater controls are working, lack of heat output is due to lack of hot coolant running through the heater coil circuit which transfers heat from the engine to the cabin. This can arise when coolant is not reaching that circuit or when coolant flow is impeded or blocked in that circuit. Proceed through the following list of tests until correcting a problem restores heat output:

  1. Check the radiator fluid level. If coolant level is low, then less or no coolant is entering the heating coil supply circuit at the water pump. Next, or after topping off the radiator . . .
    1. Check for high engine temperature reading on instrument panel gauge; if reading is well above normal, turn off engine, let it cool to point were radiator hoses can be squeezed, and then . . .
      1. If coolant level rises (as if to overflow the filler tube) but does not circulate, immediately switch off engine and then replace thermostat.
      2. If coolant circulates, turn off engine, replace radiator cap and go to next step.
    2. Remove radiator cap, check/replenish coolant level, start engine, and watch for coolant to start flowing (not rising) in radiator.
  2. Check for water circulation through the radiator . . .
    1. If one hose is hot (and hard) and the other is not, then a blockage (or rupture) has occurred in the heater coil, which will need to be replaced.
    2. If both hoses are warm to hot and misting of interior windshield is occurring (especially with defroster on), then the heater coil is leaking (coolant vapors into the fan driven air stream), and will need to be replaced.
  3. With the engine at normal operating temperature, feel the hoses leading from the water pump at engine "front" (where belts are situated):
  4. If all tests above pass, then there is an electrical or mechanical defect in the warm-cold air mixing and channelling subsystems. . . . typically requiring resort to qualified service personnel.

Heater and ac only blows on defrost?

Many cars use engine vacuum to operate HVAC controls. If vacuum is cut off the system defaults to the defrost mode. Check the HVAC vacuum supply hose under the hood leading from the engine. It may be disconnected or damaged.

What causes a car to over heat and the heater to blow cold air?

broken thermostat would cause this. depending on how much the car has overheated, and how often, you may need a new engine block/head/gasket, due to the irregular heat cycles of this engine. if the heads or the block are warped bad enough, you can check your engine oil. if it looks like chocolate milk, or has a watery film mixed with the oil, you have a blown head gasket or a warped cylinder head. this will cause major problems with your engine, requiring it to be rebuilt or replaced completly. also, check your coolant level. if the coolant is low, you will have problems opening the thermostat. the only way you should be loosing coolant is if you have a leak somewhere... this leak can be caused by a loose hose connection, a blown head gasket, a warped engine block, a wapred cylinder head, or a couple other problems. no matter what, check your oil for coolant.

What would make an Intrepid heater blow cold air?

Could be low on coolant; could need a thermostat. In either case, the car is probably going to overheat if it hasn't alreasy done so.

AnswerI am having the same problem with my 2001 Intrepid. I had the thermostat replaced and it is still blowing out cold air. I was told that it could be that I need to replace my water pump. What do you think? AnswerI've noticed sometimes if the heat is blowing cold air. I set the air to cold and then after a second or two back again.. it seems that the "brain" if there is one doesnt set the vents right if you had it in heat from before. After flopping from heat to cold and then back again it starts blowing heat for me. Other then that I'd check your coolant.. could be low, could be blocked hoses, could be blocked heater core. (possibly having it flushed I could see helping if something is restricted.) The hoses could be weak and not flowing properly to the heater core. (I havent ever looked at one on a intrepid as mine hasn't given me that probelm yet) Most of the above is previous experience from other vehicles. I don't see how a water pump could be the probelm too much without the engine having overheating probelms too. Good luck

What would make a Mercury Cougar blow cold air and the temperature gauge to overheat?

Low coolant in system and heater core needs to be flushed or changed

AnswerThere could also be is (air pocket) air in the system. If motor is cool and resivoir is full. Fill radiator from upper radiator hose run till warm then re-check resivoir. AnswerClassic head gasket leak, (a bad one probably ) Answerone thing every one missed is the thermostat if the colant is full and the car is running good other than the cold air and over heating i would change the thermostat before i would the head gaskets, one way to check the thermstat is to start the car and let it run till the gauge gets to mid range, shut the engine off and feel your radiator if its cold your thermostat is bad, another method is to pull the thermostat it should be closed when its cold, put it in a pan of water and heat it to between 185 to 195 degrees using a thermometer to check the temp, once that temp is reached the thermostat should open if it does its good and if it does not than its bad. if its a head gasket it will show one of these signs, one of the biggest signs on a couger is white smoke out the tail pipe, wich is burning antifreeze, another sign is water in the oil wich will make the oil on the dipstick look brown and milky or white and milky, another is oil in the water wich if you look in the radiator there will be brown or black spots of oil. if any of these apear you have a blown head gasket, the other way you can check is to buy a compression tester and test each cylinder for the correct compression. Your heater is not blowing air you can feel heat but will not blow?

The heater in all cars use a fan motor to blow the hot air. If you do not feel blowing air the fan is broken and needs to be replaced OR the fuse to the fan motor is burned out and needs to be replaced OR the fan switch that turns on the fan motor is bad OR the wires running to all of these is not connected somewhere. The solution? Check for a fuse in the fusebox that says "Blower" or "Fan". Remove it and put a new one in. If this does not work bring it to someone to test the other things, you cannot do it yourself.
