Car Shaking Problems

Car shaking problems are usually the results of mechanical problems. Out of adjustment tires or suspension will make the car shake after reaching a certain speed. Warped brake rotors will also make the car shake when it’s slowing down.

What would cause a car to shake after starting it?

AnswerAn engine is designed to balance itself when all cylinders are running. a 4 cylinder powers at either 90 degrees or 180 degrees depending on its design. 6, 8 10, 12 cylinders are designed the same way, but the degree which they fire is different, but they still do the same thing. without looking at your engine, it sounds like 1 or more cylinders is not powereing properly. this could be caused by a fouled spark plug, a bad distributer wire, or a bad fuel injector. this is only a few of the things that could cause this. my advise is to take to a mechanic that you trust, (ask your friends for references), & ask him to do a diagnosis for you. he will probably charge you for this. with newer cars, this is perfectly acceptable. however, if he comes back at you with"it just needs a tune-up", ask him how he determined it, & what does he include in a tune-up. a proper diagnostic should cost about 100 dollars, but it should tell you just about everything you need to know about your engine, bad timing belt, clogged injectors, etc. some shops even absorb the cost of the diagnosis if you let them do the repairs. hint: if it only shakes on a wet day, or smoothes out after it warms up, its probably plug wires or distributer cap. a good way to check is wait for a hot dry day when the engine is running smooth, take a windex type spray bottle with water, & squirt the wires & cap while the engine is running. if this is the problem, the engine will start shaking. end result, try to find a mechanic that you can trust, & then trust your mechanic.

How do you fix a rough Idle after oil change and a possible red-lined rpm?

If you've red-lined the engine and now it runs bad, there are two possibilities. First, if the oil foamed it could cause the lifters to collapse and that might cause the engine to run poorly. Let the foam settle then start the engine a few hours later and the problem should take care of itself. Second, if a valve "kissed" a piston, the valve and/or piston could be damaged. To determine if that's the problem, run a compression test. If any cylinders have zero compression, the valve or piston is probably damaged and you'll need to rebuild the engine, at least the head.

What does it mean when your car shakes when your foot is on the brakes?

sounds like warpped rotors, might want to get your wheels balenced aswell sounds like warpped rotors, might want to get your wheels balenced aswell

How do you fill a battery with acid?

Make sure it's not "Maintenance Free." Add distilled water to the battery.

What does it mean when your 2007 Toyota Camry car engine shakes and leaks oil?

its most likely a factory defect. a 2007 Toyota camary should not be leaking oil . and for the most part it should not be shaking

Why does my car idle rough when I'm parked or picking up speed or driving slowly?

I'm confused. Basically, your car can idle in only two ways, either in park or in gear with your foot on the brake and the vehicle motionless. The way the car behaves in those conditions is very telling to a trained mechanic. Some people will say the car is still idling if you take your foot off the brake but don't give it gas. (If the idle is set to high, the car might move pretty quick. That is undesirable.) That might be a third idle situation. Your car is not idling if it's accelerating. And if you are coasting and slowing down from cruising speed, the engine rpm will be higher than idle speed. So, that's not idling, either. It sounds like your car is always running rough.

Why does my steering wheel shake on 1997 Chrysler Town and Country?

Your tires are bad or you need an alignment. Get your tires checked, they may need to be replaced or rotated, and you can check your alignment by letting go of the steering wheel while driving, if it drifts left or right significantly, you need an alignment.

Why would a car shake during acceleration?

The pistons are running in the cylinders of the engine, so when the rpm of the engine rises, the pistons quickley build up speed. It is this rapid acceleration of the pistons that casue the car to shake.

What causes your car to vibrate at 80 km?

The most common cause is tire out of balance or bent wheel.

What causes my front tires to shake when I'm driving at any speed especially when i slow down?

I would suspect a bent wheel, but it can also be a tire out of balance, loose lug nuts, bad wheel bearing, or worn steering or suspension parts.

Why does the tires make a whoo noise after going 40mph or more i got new tires on. Would a bad lower control arm make the tire make that loud woo noise and also the chassis shake and steering wheel?

A tire with a more aggressive tread design like off road usually make noise but the shake is more likely an imbalance since you just put new tires on. Some small tire shops will skip this step if you're not watching and still charge you for it or if you have custom wheels will try to balance from the back with tape weights which fall off and are never as good at achieving a true balance. I would rule out balance before digging into other possible causes.

How do you remove spark plugs 5.4l 2005 Ford F-150?

You'll need to warm the truck up so you can still touch the engine by hand. Then pull off the coils which come off by disconeecting the electrical wire and then removing the single screw that holds them down. Once all the coils are removed you'll want to blow out the eight spark plug chambers. A lot of dirt and debris will fill around the the spark plug. Soak each plug with penetrating oil...Ford recommends AeroKroil which is very good stuff. I used PB blaster which is good but not as good as AeroKroil. I'd soak for about10 minutes then loosen slowly 1/8-1/4 turn. Let soak for 10 minutes longer. Then slowly turn the spark plugs out. Don't be surprised if they break in half. Ford did not use ant-seize so they tend to seize to engine. People with less than 60K miles don't have too much problems compared to people over 60K. I changed mine at 88K. Original owner never changed them so I knew I had a problem. If they break don't be worried there is a tool that works well in removing the broken end. It's made by Lisle. I picked my tool up at amazon for $60 with free shipping local tool shop wanted $100. For replacement plugs champion makes a single body double platinum that is very good. Autolite also makes an HT1 & HT15 as replacement. You'll need Nickel anti-seize for coating of new plugs. Also some electrical silicon spray for the coils when you re-install them.

How can you tell if the struts on your vehicle need replacing?

The "bounce test" always works for me. Push repeatedly on the front of the vehicle until you can get it moving up and down several inches, then quit pushing and watch. The vehicle should only continue moving for just one "cycle" (up then down or down then up) If it moves much more than that, the struts are bad. Also, visually check the struts. If they are damaged, leaking oil pr the bushings are coming apart, that's good sign that they need to be replaced.

What could cause the engine to shake in a 1993 Toyota Camry if you already replace both motor mounts?

Does one of the replaced motor mounts include the transmission mount which could actually function like a 3rd motor mount? Check that as I have seen them go bad.

AnswerSpark knock can cause engine to shake get your car checked for emissions Answer93 4 cyls are notoriously "shaky" if you feel it mostly in the steering wheel and its not too severe, there is a TSB from Toyota that has a number of parts in it that may help. improved (softer) radiator hoses, radiator lower mounts, as well as the motor mounts you've already replaced are included and have helped me to fix many similar problems.(a tuneup can help this also and its really the best place to start). the car is no longer under warranty however so you will have to pay for the parts and labor to fix it.

What is the cause of intermittent motor vibration?

It could possible that you broke a motor mount. Depending on whether the vehicle takes any abuse or not. Or it may just be loose.

Why would the steering wheel wobble?

Steering Wheel WobbleI'm no expert, however, you can check the following: brake pads could be uneven, the rotor might be damaged or worn uneven, a bent rim, an out-of-round tire, or you could be correct regarding the wheel alignment. Best of luck.

Here are more opinions and answers from other contributors:

  • Your front brake rotors are probably warped. You can either replace the rotors, or, if the rotors are only slightly warped, and there is enough material left on them, the mechanic may be able to be cut them down with a machine. Cutting them down should even the rotors out. The same thing was going on with my steering wheel as yours when I applied my brakes at high speeds, and even lower speeds. I didn't tell the dealer that I was experiencing this problem. They simply inspected my brakes one day while my car was in for an oil change and told me I needed new brake pads and to have my brake rotors cut. Since I had about 80,000 miles on that set of brake pads (yes ... 80,000 miles) I took their word for it that I needed a brake job. Luckily I didn't destroy my rotors with my nearly worn out brake pads. If you don't need new rotors, installing front brake pads and cutting the rotors should cost you a about $130 at the dealer, and maybe a little less at your local mechanic. I've noticed absolutely zero shaking of the steering wheel when I apply the brakes since the brake job. I have a Toyota Camry with 120,000 miles on it and the car now brakes beautifully. So before you spend money on an alignment, and trying to figure out if your wheel rims are bent, check those brakes.
  • Try taking the car to the problem speed and while pulling the e-brake release lever, apply the ebrakes. No vibration - problem is in the fronts (typical). Buy new rotors (pads are a good idea at the same time as is adjusting the rear brakes). Rarely can you machine rotors and have a permanent solution. The rotors are not dissapating the heat well, by cutting them they will warp easier. Check your tire balance. (Have you ever put fix a flat in?) Toyotas are sometimes an exception to brakes that go for more than 35,000 miles.
  • You need to balance your tires.
  • I have found that my problem stems from rear axle placement. A factory installation defect that is only covered under the first 12,000 miles and only if the dealer deems it to be out of spec. For all you Ford Ranger owners alot of the 2000 models have feathered tire issues which would make you think it is simply tire balance (right front wears and pulls right, some F150's have this problem as well). Located an alignment shop to verify proper axle placement.
  • Have your tie rods checked to be sure they don't need replacing.
  • Have you had your rear brakes adjusted ever since changed: warped rotors in my 95 cavalier made the whole car wobble at high speed stops and the pedal pressure changes during slow light stopping also
  • The wobbling or pulsating steering happens when I apply the brakes when trying to slow down after accelerating to a reasonably height speed like 50 to 60 miles an hour. My mechanic found that my rotors were warped and some of the steering mechanisims (parts ) were badly worn which was very unusual because the vehicle has only 11,000 miles on it. Hopefully this will be all taken care of because it's under warranty.
  • Brakes warped, tie rod ends bad, tires screwed, upper and or lower ball joints shot, in front wheel drives, check cv shaft/joints... and theres one I experienced on an old ford pick up... never would have guessed, under braking conditions the steering wheel was shaking bad.... turned out to be in the rear end... the rear wheel bearings were shot.... it only was bad while braking.
  • If it is a vibration in your steering wheel at higher speeds you might need new ball joints. This is a serious problem if that is what's wrong. So have your car looked at and soon.
  • There is also the possibility that your shocks and struts are in need of replacing. Sometimes just replacing the ball joints doesn't fix the problem. If that is affected then there is most likely something else affected. In this case I had multiple problems with my 1993 Grand Am and it was bent rims, worn shocks and struts along with worn ball joints. Once I had them all replaced the shaking steering wheel at any speed is gone. Plus your tires could be separating so check that as well that could be a cause as well.

99 Mitsubishi mirage in 6 months replaced O2 sensors fuel pump strainer filter tps n air filter still jerking from 1st to 2nd gear upon acceleration please help?

Am I right in assuming that this has an automatic gearbox? If so then more information would help. What you are experiencing may simply be a vehicle which doesn't have seamless gear changes - in this case the gear changes become more noticable under heavy acceleration. Some of these transmissions used what is known as adptive technology, this means that the computer which controls and monitors the engine and gearbox "learns" its gearshift patterns by momorizing your "style" of driving. Are there any noises associated with gear changes? Have you or can you compare with another vehicle of the same make , model?

It is possible that the learned patterns which are stored in the computer, can be reset either by means of a reset button or by disconnecting the battery for 5-10 minutes. Afterwards, the driving style will need to be changed in order to give the computer different parameters. This procedure may require some experimetation in order to "teach" a set of values to the gearchanges which feel right. At first after resetting the E.C.U, try some hard accelerating, this may instruct the computer to get out of first gear quickly to avoid over-revving - after learning this, you MAY find that the gears will shift from 1-2 at lower revs (this is just a theory of mine). Id be interested to find out how it goes.

Why does your car smell of burning rubber?

It could be a belt that needs replacing or any number of issues. Please see your mechanic.

Your car shakes at higher speeds what could it be if you have a slight shake driving at 6065 when you accelerate it shakes vigorously to 70-75 but at lower speed its smooth It has new tires?

I had this problem also where my car would shake between 55-75. It ran smoothly at 80 (don't tell the CHP). Everyone I asked said tires, so I had the tires balanced and realigned, but that didn't fix it. Most of the mechanics I asked were stumped. Finally someone recommended having the struts looked at and sure enough, I had the struts replaced (the car had 70,000 miles on it) and it worked. I have never had this problem since (now the car has 150,000). I have sold tires for a number of years and I can assure you sometimes new tires can be out-of-round. Take it back and demand that this problem be resolved. Mark
