Car Stalling Problems

The timing marks for your 3.0 liter V-6 Ford Taurus can be found on the main pulley. The timing marks can also be found on the flywheel.

A backfire is when the ignition of fuel doesn't take place in the ignition/combustion chamber, it(a backfire) can take place in the intake or exhaust. It can be caused by a fuel to air ratio not being correct, also if the timing of the spark is not just right that could cause it to back fire. It could be running lean with not enough fuel and too much air, or could have too much fuel and not enough air. It could be because the intake valves are not shut when the combustion takes place, therefore the combustion would take place in the wrong spot. The most likely cause are from: 1. Incorrect timing, the timing issue could be caused by bad wiring/ or bad ignition. 2. Incorrect fuel to air ratio, bad fuel filter, low fuel pressure-caused by weak fuel pump. Most cars will have the same cause for backfiring, as long as it's an internal combustion engine it shouldn't differ...

The year, make, model and engine info would help but a serious vacuum leak could do that.

the crank potion sensor is located under the front end of the car directly in front of the transmission. Actually when you look at it, it almost looks like it goes in to the trans.

The IAC is located directly left of the air filter, on top of the throttle body, held down by 2 bolts.

Black smoke is caused by too much fuel going into the engine. (often seen when running under load) If the engine smokes with little load and is worse at high RPM, it could be a plugged air filter. I have seen a Cat 3208 cat backfire and smoke as a result of a plugged air filter. The backfire only occured after the engine had reached operating temperature. I believe there was not enough air availiable to burn the fuel. This resulted in a loss of power, which opened the throttle even more. As a result, the unburned fuel was probably igniting prematurely on the next compression stroke causing the engine to run very poorly and backfire. After replacing fuel filters and checking for air leaks in the fuel supply with no success, replacing the air filter solved the problem.

Because when your car runs out of gas there is no more gas in the fuel lines to run the motor so when you refuel it then start it there is nothing there to keep it running. The gas have to be pumped out of the tank and into the motor.

When you push the gas pedal you are increasign the presure of the gas therefore when the pump cant meet the presure yuo set than it stalls...

Check your fuel filter (if you have one) when you take it out watch the color of the gas it should be clear and smell clean but if you see dark brown/black color than most likely your fuel filter is clogged.

check the fuel pump (and sock) turn your vehicle on and stand next to the gas tank on the side of the vehicle and listen for the fuel pump if it makes a real loud noise than the pump is going bad and needs to be replaced.

take negative off battery for 30 minutes and clean the Throttle Body

Some possibilities include: faulty or dirty MAF sensor, fuel pressure regulator, or the torque converer solenoid.

hi sounds like it could be a vacumn leak or double check cam timing. jerry

try fiddling around with your idler or maybe replace the fuel pump or fuel filter.

4/5/2010: I have the same problem with my 1992 Geo Storm GSI 2+2 and have been told it's the EGR valve. Good luck finding one. I'm having trouble myself.

Fuel pump problem but more likely an ignition coil or HEI problem. To be specific it woul help to know the year and model. Y-THINK-Y

If your vehicle is an automatic, I would suggest that your tranny has a blockage in its fluid coupling which may have happened if you received a transmission flush lately. BTW never get a transmission fluid flush on anything car with more than 100,000 kms or you will be having to rebuild your tranny in a matter of months. If your vehicle is a standard (or automatic) you could have a gas line blockage, either at the gas filter, which should be close to the fire wall or the filter at the end of the gas line where it connects to the carburater, you may have two on that celica. It will look like a gold cylindrical piece of crushed metal pieces compressed together (its hard to explain), but it will be at the end of your gas line in a housing on the carburater(s). You had best hope this is the problem as it is the quickest and cheapest, if not then you may need to check your carbs for balancing and any leaks from the vacuum lines. Hope that helps. JohnnyB

Dirty carburetor.

Depending on the type of car/truck, carburetor/injected, gas/diesel.... I would look at fuel filter, linkage, fouled plugs, totally dirty air cleaner. Those are the easiest items to check from there electronics, timing is way off, vacuum issues, fuel pump etc.

The intake gasket is a piece of material, sometimes a paper material reinforced at times with copper, that installs between the engine, and the intake manifold to seal the gaps to prevent air from entering. The intake manifold is a part of the engine that attaches to the carburetor, or injection system to deliver the correct air/fuel mixture to your engine for burning in the combustion chambers to make the power to drive the wheels. If that gasket is bad, excess air will enter the cylinders causing the engine to run poorly, or not at all.

Unless there is a ton of water in there then I would just add some gas line antifreeze and run the truck until the tank is almost empty. The only would be to either siphon with a pump (you will need to take the screen out of the filler pipe) or drop the tank. Look directly underneath the filler pipe on your truck for the gas tank. Again, if it was me I would just run it out.

The location is where the oil rail and the injectors and the camshafts are the sensor is conected direct to the rail . You have to remove the aluminum intercooler , the plastic cover , and the aluminum cover to see the sensor .

I have a 1990 firebird 3.1l engine.I had the same issue wherein it will idle fine,but when u engage the gears,you will notice it's drop in rpm.I replaced the thermostat first since temperature wasn't going up,then I tested the EGR which failed amp readings,then last would be the MAP sensors.That fixed my problem with the car.After all three parts were replaced,It ran fine and running on 700rpm on idle.
