Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

Your car only clicks once when you try to start engine?

A single click and no response from the starter usually indicates a faulty starter relay/solenoid switch. It could also be a loose connection on the battery cable.

How do you test the Electronic Control Module on a 1993 Pontiac Transport?

The only definitive test for the ECM for all possible problems is to establish a set of circumstances during which the behavior/symptom you expect is caused by the ECM always occurs and create these same conditions using a known good ECM.

Failing that, you can test the vehicle systems around the ECM and determine that there is definitely no (external) problem other than the ECM to prove that the ECM is faulty. Typically, you determine which inputs and outputs are related to the undesired behavior and check for correct signals in/out of the ECM by backprobing the connectors and using suitable equipment including a quality multimeter and an oscilloscope. Do not forget to verify that the connectors make good contact at the ECM.

Also, try gently tapping the ECM with a screwdriver handle or twisting the ECM with your hands.

You have 1989 iroc camaro that died and wont start again replaced the fule pump and fule module fule filter she gets spark air and gas used a diagn-tool and says no dtscodes any suggestions help?

what i would say is follow all of the fule lines and make shoure they are not rusted on older comaros the fule lines run along the bottom of the frame so when it rains water drips off of the frame on to the fule lines which will causes rust or check the fule relay

When turn the key it makes one ckick and won't start eventially it will catch and start why?

battery cable connectins A single click and no start usually indicates a loose battery connection or a faulty starter solenoid/relay switch. Since you mention it will eventually catch, I would discount the loose battery connection and go directly to the solenoid/relay switch.

Your 93 Toyota pickup 4Cyl will start but shuts off after 4-6 seconds of running?

After recently completely changing out a 1992 cab to a 1995 cab, there insn't anything i dont know about this year of cab (89-95). i had this problem once and i had to make sure that my mass air flow sensor was completely hooked up, I only have the 22re motor, so there is a large tube from the intake to air filter and that tube has to be completely hooked up, that air flow sensor is like a throttle sensor, your pedal opens the air with a "gate" on intake and the sensor senses air flow to give more actions after that, if its disconnected, it will only run while pumping the pedal, and in some cases not even that. any other questions email me kc0tdw@kc0tmo.com

Why would a car not start in cold weather?

batteries are rated for cranking amps and cold cranking amps.. in warm or hot conditions your engine oil is also warm and not thick so your batteries do just fine.. now in cold weather conditions your engine oil is thick so your battery doesnt have the potential to crank the engine

My car wont start unless you push down gas pedal and when it starts RPM goes high and then the car suddenly dies I have a 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE Automatic Battery is good Any Help?

Could be a clogged injector or fuel filter. The RPM's go high due to you pressing on the gas pedal to allow more fuel in there. The more air/fuel mixture, the higher your RPMs. Your Idle Speed Controller might also be out, which is why you would need to manually give it the fuel it needs.

Try running some SeaFoam through the fuel tank (put it in before you add new gas to it), then drive around for a bit (5-10 minutes). That should help clear up the injectors and possibly the clog in the fuel filter. If it still acts up, have a mechanic test out your Idle Speed Controller. That is more than likely the culprit.

I ran out of gas. i then put gas in and it won't start?

Try leaving your key in the "on" position for a few minutes. Your car has a pressurized system that needs to re-pressurize when it runs dry. The fuel pump only runs when the key is on the "on" position.

When you turn your ignition key to the " RUN " position just before

starting the vehicle , the ELECTRIC fuel pump will only run for 2 or 3 seconds

if you don't start the vehicle . Try cycling the ignition key from the OFF

position to the RUN position a few times if needed

What could be wrong with a 1998 GMC Safari van that makes no sound at all when you turn the key and won't start?

Dead battery low battery will click check all connections for tightness If battery is charged and still no response starter for sure.

Your 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis wont catch spark to start.?

Check the ignition coil on the Marquis. Check the crank sensor as well. One of these is probably bad.

Why does my 1986 grand Jeep wagoneer engine suddenly die and sometimes won't start back up could hardly get it home?

Obviously, it could be a number of things... but I had a 84' Porsche 944 that did the same thing, what was wrong with it was a bad ground wire. So if it just occasionally dies, try to observe when it does and where it does and see if there are any consistencies. My Porsche would die by hitting bumps in the road rapidly... and it turned out to be a loose ground wire. So, I would try to check the wiring (which is very tedious), beause it might be a bad ground.

How do you use the key to get into a Hyundai tiburon if you have lost the remote when we get in the alarm immediately goes off and the car will not start.?

Get in the car and shut the door, DO NOT lock the door. The alarm will be going off at this piont. Wait for the alarm to stop. Put the key in and turn it to the ON position, the alarm will activate again, wait for it to stop. When all is silent for a few moments turn the key to off, take it out and wait for the safety beep. After of which, put the key back in, turn the key to on and wait for the 3 beeps and start the car. This worked for my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon and it may work for yours as well.

All i did on my 03 Tiburon GT was turn key to "on" while alarm was going off waited 30 seconds and started it right up

Make sure you are using the original key as well, my tiburon key has a chip in it that works with the alarm, if you are using a duplicate that doesn't have the chip that also could be your problem.

Why wont your Suzuki vitara start the battery is new and works but the engine doesnt click or start what could be wrong?

"Dead" Starter CircuitsI'm not familiar with your vehicle, but...

I suspect that the problem is an "open circuit" conditionin the circuit between your ignition switch and the starter solenoid, or possibly the starter solenoid itself.

Something that is supposed to be in contact is disconnected, or possibly the contacts inside the ignition switch have failed and won't make contact.

New battery installed in vw new beetle now it won't start and horn honks for 1 min. what do I do?

Your alarm needs to be reset. Look in the manual for instructions. The alarm was probably arms when you changed the battery an now the alarm computer is thinking that it is being triggered by the ignition.

You have replaced the distributor cap and roter on your 83 jimmy you have power to your coil but not out of the distributor why?

You may have power to the coil but if it doesn't "pulse" in time with the engine revolutions you'll never get a spark.

With the key on, disconnect the power to the coil. You'll see a big spark as you disconnect the wire if the coil is working. (use plastic pliers or something that will protect you from a really big electrical surge, getting shocked with one of those things isn't fun)

You could have a problem with the distributor "pickup" (I'm pretty sure a stock 83 doesn't have mechanical points), the control module or the coil itself. Replace the module in the rotor base. That sucker controls the coil firing and is often intermittent.

Your Nissan terrano 2.7TD wont start and only turns over and blows white smoke how do you start it?

well if I'm not mistaken, your engine is toast... white smoke usually means your blowing antifreeze through your engine... best advice? talk to your mechanic... least problem? might be a head gasket worst scenerio... cracked block... sorry....

Why might a 2001 Suburban not start the first time you turn the ignition?

fuel pump may be going out try cycling key on and off 2 or 3 times before cranking this will allow fuel pump to prime 4-2-06 We had same issue in our '01 since it was new. Dealer told us the firing voltage or amps was to low, he replaced starter and if fires on first turn of key everytime now.
