Car Starting Problems

Put both front seats forward, towards the middle of the outer "butt" areas slide your hand under the seat, lift up and forward. Remove the seat from the vehicle. Purchase and Optima or similar AGM battery(Cuts down the floor rot from acid) remove and install in a regular manner, removing the 2 8 mm battery bolts and the battery hold down clamp. Install seat in reverse fasion paying attention to the seat belts (Keeping them above the seat) push down after you have the seat centered on the holders. DoNe

There probably are many reasons, but the only other one I can think of at the moment is a defective ignition coil, which has a "thermal intermitent" [occurs only at and above a certain temperature] which could be either a short, or an open.j3h.

There is very little information upon which to base a diagnosis. However the primary reasons would be air/fuel mixture, electrics or timing. These should be checked first

There is:

A: There is a loose connection between the cables and the battery. Which means you would most likely have to clean/replace the battery cable clamps.

B:Ignition Relay switch is damaged, which can be replaced.

C: There may be the incorrect battery for your vehicle, that there is not enough power (CCA: Cold Cranking Amps) to fully start your vehicle.

Any of these choices could be your problem, When you turn and hold down the ignition switch to start the engine, there's not enough power to both light the dashboard and instrument cluster and start the vehicle at the same time, therefore making the relay ignition switch "arc" some electricity through the switch, thus creating the clicking sound.

Possibly there is not enough current in the battery to make this happen or your starter motor is shot.

Perhaps you might mean that it doesn't start. Not turning over is not the same as not starting.

If all electronics work and the car still will not start, it might be a problem with the starter or ignition. If it was the alternator, the battery would be dead. There is also a possibility that the code on the key is worn if the car is equipped with electronic ignition. The car might also be out of fuel or have a fuel pump problem.

Did you get some debris in the fuel tank? There is a fuel pump "pickup" filter that prevents debris from enterning the fuel pump. If that filter is plugged the pump will not be able to produce enough filter to start the engine.

remove the distributor cap and clamp a test light to ground. hold the point of the test light about 1/2" from the coil output electrode. have someone crank the engine and look to see if sparks jump across to the point on the testlight. if they do the coil is ok. if they dont clamp the testligt to the + terminal of the coil and put the point on the - side. again, have somone crank the engine, if the light flashes the signal is good. replace the coil.

no fuel, bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, low fuel pressure, no spark, clogged air filter, weak/bad battery (dirty terminals), no ground path from engine to battery, bad timing, ignition wires connected in the wrong order, low compression, bad rotor, bad distributor cap(carbon tracing ,ect), fouled spark plugs, shorted solenoid, bad holding winding in solenoid, bad ignition coil(bad connection), bad neutral safety switch, bad ignition switch, among others,

The first thing I would do is replace the fuel filter and make sure the fuel pump is actually running when it dies. The pump may be overheating and shutting down. A clogged fuel filter will cause this.

hi i have a 01 vw jetta i just got it back today from the dealership my car would turn over but not crank and it was the mass airflow the replaced it and restarted the computer on my car and it runs great !! it only cost me 450 to fix it

Check your alternator and if that isn't it (but sounds like it) take a look at your starter.

Some things that cause a car to hard start are: bad ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel pump relay, fuel pump, fuel regulator, battery, bad electrical connections on battery, dirty battery, dirty carb, clogged fuel filter, dirty IAC, and the list goes on.....

my 1997 pathfider cranks but will not fire.

Most likely you have a leaking fuel accumulator. The accumulator stores fuel pressure for the CIS (fuel injection) and is a critical part for proper running. Park the car on concrete, rev the car several times and hold at about 3000RPM for a few seconds. Shut the car off. Look under the car on the passenger side approximately under where the passenger seat is located. You will see what looks like an old ignition coil (army drab green color) with two metal lines attached to it that is the fuel accumulator. Check under the car and around the accumulator for any gasoline. If you find gasoline under or on the accumulator, the accumulator must be replaced for proper running of the car. Be sure to also check all vacuum lines on the engine especially the rubber "T" which has several larger lines coming from it going to the engine and system. The T tends to break down and leak air which messes up the injection system. When the T breaks down, it looks fine but has become gooey so you will need to actually touch it and move it to make sure it has not deteriorated to the point of leaking. With the engine running (don't put your hands in any moving parts!) move and bend all the vacuum hoses and if the engine stalls or increases speed, that hose must also be replaced as it is leaking air or is not making a good seal at the fittings.

best thing for u to do is take your battery to an auto parts store and get it checked (its free to do)....If your battery is bad then obviously you need to replace....if its good....then your next step would be to check the alternator as most times this will be your problem(hope not its gonna cost around 150$ and is a pain to replace)...hope this helps...im going thru the same problem as we speak=( IF it is the battery then your answer is more than likely a bad cell in the batter, if not than either way you are going to have to replace the battery, there is no way around that

You need to check the fuel filter and the fuel pressure regulator.

Need more info like, does the starter engage? Does the starter turn the engine over? Does the starter turn the engine over but the engine does not run?

It means there is a problem with the charging system. Can be a loose drive belt, problem with the alternator, or loose wire.

My car starts and runs fine .Yours may need a fuel filter or pump.

Disconnect the - battery cable

Raise and support vehicle

Remove wiring at top of starter

Remove starter mounting bolts

Remove starter

Disconnect your battery for a couple minutes to let the system reset. Should do the trick.
