What are the possible problems when oil is leaking into my 1995 Chevy lumina engine?

If the engine is the 3.1L V-6, the answer may be a simple one depending on where you notice the oil leaking. 1. If it is coming down the back side of the engine mainly and leaving marks toward the middle of the car, it has a very common problem, GM assembled the cars with an improperly designed seal around the oil pump driver. This driver mounts in the block where the distributor would normally go, however they changed the system to a DIS ignition (distributorless) however the distributor in most if not all GM motors not only controls spark but links the camshaft to the oil pump. So by replacing the distributor the driver had to be created. The fix is somewhat simple if you are slightly inclined and you have a larger toolkit at your house. You need to remove the air duct, throttle body, EGR valve and upper plentum. Once all these parts are removed you should be able to see a different color round part below, near where the transmission mounts to the engine block. There is one hex bolt that holds a small wedge on the round (about 2" diameter) top of the pump driver. You remove the hex bolt, the wedge and pull the driver straight up and out, you might need to pry up with a screwdriver first to get it loose. You will need to replace the O ring that is seated on the unit you removed. Assembly is opposite of removal and it should solve your problem. 2. another more simple problem if it is mostly leaking from the front is the front pressure sending unit, it should be located on the front of the block to the driver's side of the oil filter. If you remove the wire that goes into it, you will notice oil on the inside of the plug if it is bad. You can purchase this at a parts store for a small price and it is very simple to replace with a 1 1/8" socket if i remember correctly. Both of the above are more annoying causes of leaks if you have checked the obvious such as loose oil filter, loose oil plug, or leaking valve cover gaskets.

Is it possible to get to thermostat for replacement without removing the exhaust manifold housing on 97 Chevy lumina?

loosen the bottom bolt with a 13 mm swival head socket, do not remove the bolt all the way, take out the top one and the thermostat housing will slide out and then remove the thermostat.

How do you find and replace the thermostat on a 1996 Chevy Lumina 3.1 engine?

Its located under the throttle body or follow the upper radiator hose til it hits a semi round housing. There is 2 bolts to remove it. First you have to drain the radiator fluid of course.

I am changing the thermostat right now on my 2001 Chevy lumina and I see I will have to also remove the throttle body to get to the thermostat housing

You have a 1992 Chevy astro van and the rear door handle broke how do you get the door open to replace the handle?

I had the same problem with my '97. It took me awhile but I finally figured out that You have to loosen the inside trim panel (left inside panel) by removing the screws then pull out the panel just far enough to squeeze your hand behind it and then you can feel around for the locking mechanism rod and work it manually.Be careful not to pull the plastic trim too far out or you'll break the side that's still connected behind the hinge side.

Here's is some basic step by step instructions to replace the back door on Chevy AStro Vans 1992-2001 models. (when the door is shut and the handle broke)

1) previous answer suggest loosening the inside trim.

a) the three bottom screws on the inside trim near the floor need to be removed or loosened first.

b) the three "Star" screws holding the window to the door need to be removed

2) Carefully 'pop' and pull the inside panel from the door

a) don't worry the connectors are straight so horizontally will do

b) the top two connectors above the window don't mess with. you will probably break them and don't need to 'popped' to loosen the inside trim.

3) carefully reach inside the panel near the top above the silver brace bar.

a) lift up on the locking mechanism to unlock the door. it will stay in place once done.

b) push down on the door handle mechanism and carefully push the door open.

4) once the door is open. remove the 4 screws and the side panel to access the door handle region.

a) remove the hex washer nuts from the door handle

b) detach the silver metal bar horizontally from the handle

c) seat the new handle.

d) tighten the hex washer nuts down on the handle

e) re-attach the silver metal bar into the new handle

5) put the door back together with the inside panel

6) try the door a couple times so that it works

7) reattach the black side panel and you're done

I've done this 3 times on Astro Van door handles and this time it took 18 minutes! yeah.

Where is the starter in a 1996 lumina?

The starter is in the frount up under the car towards the middle of the car it almost looks like an oil fillter but a bit smaller.

99 lumina with a coolant leak it seems to be coming from the top of the engine What might be the cause?

There could be known problem with the Intake Manifold gasket decomposing due to the heat and chemical reaction with the Anti-Freeze solution. Chevy denies this but

there have been class action lawsuites filed about this problem.

The gasket is about $50.00 and a new Intake Manifold is about $100.00 if you buy

them at AutoZone. Labor to replace is about $150.00 depending on where you get

your car serviced.

If this is your problem, get the gasket replaced ASAPbecause when it fails, the

cylinders will fill with Anti-Freeze and lock up the engine. You will not be able to

turn over the engine. This of course can allow Anti-Freeze to mix with the engine

oil, especially if the Piston Rings are worn.

If you see a white or yellow gooey sludge on your dipstick, you have Anti-Freeze mixing with your oil. Get this problem fixed before you have to replace the entire engine.

The symptoms of a failing gasket can be varied, but mine were as follows:

I noticed the level of Anti-Freeze in the Overflow tank was low every two or three

days.

I noticed Anti-Freeze on the ground where I parked my car.

The engine seemed to run hotter than usual on several occassions. The temperature

guage would spike and then come down within a minute of so.

Just before the total failure of the gasket, my engine started missing like one or two

cylinders were not firing.

Replacing the spark plugs and spark plug wires, and the Coil Pack made no difference.

Replacing the thermostat made no difference.

Replacing the water pump made no difference, but I did notice some green or black

slime in the water.

Papa4

OR, you simply have a bad thermostat and radiator cap and too much pressure and heat are building up in the cooling system. Check the oil dipstick. Look at the water in the radiator. If there looks like there is oil in the coolant, get it to a mechanic ASAP.

Ive replaced the thermostat water pump and flushed the radiator on my 96 Chevy lumina and now it jumps from 125 to 260 while im driving It also overheats while im driving.?

You may have the problem of your intake manifold gaskets. They are a problems on the lumina. I had to have mine replaced due to the same thing. Also check if your coolant is mixing with your oil if it is. Than it is definitally your intake manifold gasket.

How to change spark plug on 92 Chevy lumina 31lt?

The best way to find out is go to your local auto parts store, ask for a haynes or chiltons manual on your vehicle. This will tell you everything you need to know about working on your vehicle. The front 3 are easy. The back 3 require you to roll the motor over. take of the bones connecting the motor to the front of the car and gently rock the engine forward.

How many quarts of oil go in a 1991 Chevy Lumina?

Park on level surface. Drain the oil and replace the filter. Pour in 4.5 quarts of oil and start the engine. Let it run for 2 minutes, shut off and let sit for 30 minutes. Check the level and add if necessary. You now know how much it holds.

How do you install the serpentine belt on a 1992 Chevy Lumina 3.1?

Look at all the pulleys and you'll see one that isn't really connected to anything like the power steering unit, alternator, water pump or the engine. It's connected only to an "arm". This arm is spring loaded and is what provides the "tension" to the belt. If I recall, there's a nub that you can put an adjustable wrench on and use the wrench as "leverage" to swing the arm and release the tension. Then with your other hand, get the loosened belt off of the alternator pulley first (since it's a small pulley and it's right on top). Now you can release the arm since you have the belt started and the rest is elementary. Reinstall the same way...get it almost all the way on exept for on the alternater, pry the arm to give slack, slip over the alternator last and you're done. This belt is grooved with an exect number of grooves. This grooves match grooves on all the pulleys. Make sure the belt is lined up in all the grooves-especially the very bottom pulley...the crankshaft-it's the one most likely to be not quite on because it's hard to see while you're prying with the wrench.

Is there anything else besides the relay and the fuse that would make the fuel pump not work on a 1990 Chevy Lumina?

IS it the pump itself? Did you check for a blocked fuel filter? are you getting any fuel pressure to the fuel rail?

What is wrong if a 1993 Chevy Lumina started cranking slower and slower and now will not crank at all it just clicks but the battery is charged?

The symptom you describe has happened to me numerous times in different vehichles. The explanation is simple, while the actual events leading up to it are more complex. The simple answer is the battery is dead. The battery contains lead plates that react with the acid in the case to create the energy you use to start the engine, power the lights and radio etc. As the battery ages the lead plates flake off pieces of lead due to heat, vibration and natural degradation. occasionally a big flake will fall off and touch a neighboring plate as well as the plate it came off of. This causes a short in that plate. The way to test this ist o place the battery under a "LOAD" take your battery to any Schucks or autozone and they will test it for free. The battery will show that it holds 12volts and appears charged. but in reality it contains no AMps to crank the engine. The battery is toast. This happens more often in very hot climates and where the battery is subjected to excessive vibration. Sorry my friend but you have to replace the battery. i was trying to give a different answer to this question and the answer is im 99 percent sure its the starter. since they said the batt is charged and ive been down the same path with my starter.

How do you replace the pressure hose on the power steering pump on a 95 Chevy Lumina?

Sometimes it is hard to get to the fitting on the pump and you have to remove the pump but is really isn't too hard.

I received a quote for $371.00 from a very reputable automobile repair shop. They assured me of the fact that it would take them five hours labor to complete this job. This is what I did today on my 93 Lumina. This is one of the most difficult lines to change. The angle of the line under the car is a nightmare. You cannot get to it from the top or the bottom. I tried using a line wrench and a crows foot. I could not get enough leverage because the fitting angle was away from me, and I had no room to work. I finally figured it out and here is what I did. First, I had to remove the belt in order to remove line from the pump. It's a single fitting and does not take but about five minutes. Next I had to get under the car and remove the bracket that stabilizes both the high and low pressure lines. The next thing that I did was to remove the top motor mount bars and pull my engine forward and brace it with two 2 X 4"s, as if you were going to change the spark plugs. The next thing that I did was to remove the transmission dipstick. (THIS IS KEY!), remove the rubber line (4") that goes from your air filter to your fuel injection system, this gives you access to reach the fitting. Next, I took a triangle file and filed the line as close to the fitting as possible. Once you filed enough to remove the line take a pair of pliers and break the line off. Once you've broke the line off, you can gain access to the fitting with an 18mm socket on the end of a super long extension with a flexible head from the passenger side of the engine. It took me less than a minute to get the fitting out. It's a piece of cake. Remove the fitting and then install the new line. You will have to get back under the car and have someone help you to guide the fitting to the correct hole. You cannot see the hole from under the car. Make sure that you start the fittings by hand that you can then tighten it from the top of the engine. Then tighten the hose on the pump end, and then reinstall everything that you removed in order to gain access. It should take about 1.5 to 2 hours. (BREAKING THE LINE AND GAINING THE ACCESSIBILITY WITH THE LONG EXTENSION IS CRITICAL) If you attempt to remove this hose without filing the line, it could take you five to seven hours. I hope that this helps!
