Check to see if coolant is getting mixed with engine oil
Run engine to normal operating temperature and remove oil dipstick, let a drop fall on hot part of engine - oil will smoke coolant will sizzle.
If coolant is mixed with oil could be a bad head gasket.
If coolant mixes with oil you won't need any special tests to see it. When they mix it will look like a vanilla milk shake.
The newer coolant return systems are designed to keep the coolant level inside your radiator and engine full. When you car cools down (after running at normal temperature) it is designed to pull coolant out of the return reservoir back into the radiator. If the system gets too much pressure (usually from getting too hot) it will push coolant into the reservoir and then pull it back in as it cools. If the system has a leak then it will always pull back in more than it pushed out and the reservoir will have all coolant removed. Then the system will begin to draw in air causing the engine to eventually overheat from lack of cooling.
Your heater works from the hot coolant passing through a small "radiator" under your dash. If the coolant is low then little or not hot coolant will pass through it.

Look in the manual for the car. If mot a dealersip will know simply call the part department at a GM delaership on the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder the plugs are under the metal cap on top of the engine which has either sohc or dohc on it.. they are on the firewall side once you remove the cap.

Would a dirty fuel filter cause engine surging on a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT?
A) Change the filter, $25. B) Have injector system cleaned etc., $100. C) I had a surging problem 45-50 MPH. Battery terminals were corroded. I do not know how it even started. It was the original batt. 129,000 miles, 7.5 years old. I bought the car used in 2005, a 1999 (12/98) GP-GT @105,000 mi. I discovered the terminal problem when I had starting problems a week ago. The negative terminal was loose, and the positive terminal was "solid green/white" corrosion. Cleaned the terminals, replaced the battery, it was due. Behold my surgging stopped, tranny shifting is smooth, mpg & fuel read out is working dead nuts now. Check it out it worked for me. Dennis

The tensioner is automatic, no adjustment needed. If you threw the serpentine belt then look for a misaligned pulley or worn tensioner wheel. If you need to move the tensioner to get the belt back on then look for a square hole in the tensioner arm. Use a breaker bar with the appropriate sized square (probably 3/4") to move the arm to get the belt back on.

Your ECM should be located on the passenger side of the car. remove the glove box and it should be on the outide wall. I am not sure that there is an acual fuse for this. but that is where the ECM is located. i hope that this is helpful.
