Listen more and talk less. People find good listeners irresistible and usually can't wait to launch forth about themselves. You can learn from their experiences and apply the lessons to your own life. You can also advise people (if they ask it) from the other experiences you have learned from. I assume you are in the US but can only tell you what it is in australia. Basically you have to complete engineering bachelor which is 4 years, 5 with a double. Then do a masters, 1 to 2 years, then do your PhD which is usually 3 years. If you are going to do a PhD think why you want it. If you are into research then go ahead, it will go naturally but if you are just getting the title then I think you can spend the time a bit better on something else. =)
