theres a very good chance that the engine has a blown head gasket.
what is happening is the water cooling the engine is escaping past the head gasket & into the engine, mixing with the oil making it milky coloured.
the water is also escaping into the cylinders, making the steam come from your exhaust, you may also have trouble when turning the engine over, with water building up in the cylinders when cooling down.

sounds like you have leaky valve seals. They are letting oil into the cylinder when the car sits still. There are tools that allow you to replace the valve seals without taking off the heads. If you have or can afford the tools, this is the way to go.

It really depends how much water you are talking about. Was water placed into the muffler say during a car wash? Or could it be coolant from a blown head gasket? Most modern mufflers actually create water through a chemical reaction. So if you are seeing a little drip out of the drain hole you are probably ok.

If the exhaust valve is on the #3 cylinder (driver's side, frontmost cylinder), it is the one that gets the hottest in the aircooled VWs. It is also the one that is most likely to burn or get 'swallowed' (broken off and being rammed by piston). Usually sticking is caused by the valve guide being worn, so pulling the head is mandatory. Assuming it's really stuck open and not burned, here's something to try. Put the offending cylinder at Bottom Dead Center (farthest away from the valves), remove the valve cover and tap the stem of the valve with a plastic or brass hammer, or piece of wood between a regular hammer and the valve stem/spring retainer. It may pop back up. Turn the engine over by hand to see if it sticks again.

Right off the top with out going into detail I would try checking your air filter. Also check fuel filter both of these can cause your check engine light to come on. With that new of a car or truck there shouldn,t be any thing major wrong with it. Also check your fuel filler cap make sure it is on right. These newer car are so computerized the slightist thing causes your check engine light to come on. They have got censors all over them ready to go off at any time.
As a Gm master tech, the most likely cause is a Evap code caused by your fuel cap not being on tight. This code only sets if your fuel is 1/4 to 3/4 full. Tighten the cap and disconnect the battery to clear the code. If you let me know what model vehicle and can give you some more hints to what else it might be.

If you are having a lot of white smoke all the time the car runs then check for coolant mixing in with the oil,look for water in the oil when you check the oil or milky brown oil. This produces a white "steam" that is very thick to come out of the exhaust. If your engine temp. gauge is very high and over heats you probably have a blown head gasket. If it has a bluish tint look it may be burning oil. Indications might be how much oil is currently in the car i.e too much oil, or if there is a leak in the line you may be adding a bunch of oil over a short time. Intermittant problem. The " check engine light" is by far one of the most misunderstood technological advances by the public. This is an needed in-depth understanding for the public. It is a warning light that is illuminated when there is a problem affecting the EMISSION SYSTEM only. Emission system being the pollution control system. Don't get a hard on against it as it is a good thing once you understand it. One point that was brought up a a recent meeting of technicians was that the amount of hydrocarbons is greater when the gas cap is left off than when the engine is running. Hydrocarbons are part of pollution emitted as gasoline evaporates. Going a step farther, one facet of the emission system is the "Evaporative" portion. This is when the fumes from the gasoline are leaking from the system into the outside air. This is one part of the emission system that can trigger a check engine light. I would say that about 7% of the vehicles that have a check engine light are the result of a loose or inadequate gas cap. But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have 17 different computers) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they can be vastly different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests are not run until preceding ones have run successfully. Generally speaking, white smoke is a sign of a blown head gasket, cracked cylinder head or any defect allowing water to enter combustion chamber. Remove spark plugs and look for one that is noticeably cleaner than the rest. That's the problem cylinder or if 2 adjacent plugs are like that it is a crack in the head gasket between those 2 cylinders.

One tech for one day (8hrs) at the contractors going hourly rate. Plus the cost of materials. I don`t understand what could have failed on the accumulator, since it is basically just a tank. Unless it leaks, if so it may pay for you to discuss an entire new outdoor unit.
Hey Cort==The a/c compressor draws about 10 horsepower. At idle your engine is developing about 30 hp so you are taking about 1/3 of it for the compressor. You may have switch problems on the compressor causing it not to work in some positions. GoodluckJoe

Possibly a leaky valve cover gasket allowing oil to seep out and down on to exhaust manifold.
