Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

What does milky looking oil in engine with white steam from coming exhaust mean?

theres a very good chance that the engine has a blown head gasket.

what is happening is the water cooling the engine is escaping past the head gasket & into the engine, mixing with the oil making it milky coloured.

the water is also escaping into the cylinders, making the steam come from your exhaust, you may also have trouble when turning the engine over, with water building up in the cylinders when cooling down.

Which valves are the intake and exhaust on a 20r engine?

the intake are next to the carb and the exhaust are next to the exhaust manafold intake are .008 exhaust are .012 with the engine warm good luck

When you've weld say an exhaust pipe what is the best paint to use to cover the weld and surounding metal to stop it coroding ive used a heat proof paint but its not waterproof so just lets it rust?

cold galvanizing might work it prevents corriosion, pipes from the store are galvonized. Heat paint only looks nice, but rember if you weld galvanized stuff it can emit an amount of toxic gas

What is wrong with the car if there is blue smoke from the exhaust when you take off from a stop but it goes away while moving?

Hey Lynn==It is probably just tired and in need of an overhaul. It will probably chug along for some time but an overhaul is in order. GoodluckJoe

sounds like you have leaky valve seals. They are letting oil into the cylinder when the car sits still. There are tools that allow you to replace the valve seals without taking off the heads. If you have or can afford the tools, this is the way to go.

bad valve stem seals or oil return holes in the heads are blocked with sludge.

If the code reader says P304 on a 2001 Hyuandai Elantra what does that mean and what do you need to fix the problem?

P304 means misfire on number four cylinder. Can be bad spark plug ,bad plug wire,or bad fuel injector. could also be loose plug wire or injector wire. How many miles since tune-up ?

What causes a car battery to smoke?

First of all, dangerous situation! That battery can explode in your face if you create a spark anywhere near it. The charging system may be over charging the battery or the battery may have an internal problem. Allow the battery to cool down (over night) before you do any thing.

How bad is water in your muffler?

just if your worried buy a new muffler. but i would say not to bad. it will dry up.

It really depends how much water you are talking about. Was water placed into the muffler say during a car wash? Or could it be coolant from a blown head gasket? Most modern mufflers actually create water through a chemical reaction. So if you are seeing a little drip out of the drain hole you are probably ok.

How do you fix a sticking exhaust valve in a VW 1600 air-cooled motor?

If the exhaust valve is on the #3 cylinder (driver's side, frontmost cylinder), it is the one that gets the hottest in the aircooled VWs. It is also the one that is most likely to burn or get 'swallowed' (broken off and being rammed by piston). Usually sticking is caused by the valve guide being worn, so pulling the head is mandatory. Assuming it's really stuck open and not burned, here's something to try. Put the offending cylinder at Bottom Dead Center (farthest away from the valves), remove the valve cover and tap the stem of the valve with a plastic or brass hammer, or piece of wood between a regular hammer and the valve stem/spring retainer. It may pop back up. Turn the engine over by hand to see if it sticks again.

How will a hole in the exhaust affect fuel consumption and power output?

It will have a negligible effect on anything except your health. Carbon monoxide will enter the passenger compartment and could possibly cause you to either have an accident or do serious physical harm. Driving a car with a hole in the exhaust is dumb. Carbon monoxide is orderless and tasteless and you will never know it is present. Get this fixed ASAP and only drive with all windows open. The above is not entirely true. A hole in your exhaust WILL affect your car's performance. 1) The loss of 'Back Pressure' in the system will affect the effective 'Scavenging' of the exhaust fumes, because motor manufacturers spend millions of pounds/dollars 'tuning' exhaust systems to make them efficient. 2) In those cars fitted with Fuel Injection, a hole could interfere with the readings of the system's Oxygen (Lambda) sensor, thus resulting in poor fuelling, poor power etc. 3) Air entering the hole and mixing with unburned fuel in the system could cause a 'Backfire', damaging the exhaust even more. 4) It can cause damage to your cataluytic converter (if fitted)...these are EXPENSIVE to replace. Extra Extra Again the above is still not strictly true 1) Back pressure is what racers andmodders want to minimise, manufacturers do spend a lot of money but often have to compromise, this leading to not so effective systems. 2) Only if the hole is before the sensor will it affect the readings 3) Very littel air could enter a hole, again depending on where it is, if your car is backfiring, theproblem could be elsewhere, unlikely to be hte ingress of air through a hole in the exhaust 4) Again it could only damage the cat if it before the cat in the system, after the cat will not affect it at all. Cheers

What are some possible problems that would cause the check engine light on a 2002 Chevy with 44K miles to come on?

Right off the top with out going into detail I would try checking your air filter. Also check fuel filter both of these can cause your check engine light to come on. With that new of a car or truck there shouldn,t be any thing major wrong with it. Also check your fuel filler cap make sure it is on right. These newer car are so computerized the slightist thing causes your check engine light to come on. They have got censors all over them ready to go off at any time.

As a Gm master tech, the most likely cause is a Evap code caused by your fuel cap not being on tight. This code only sets if your fuel is 1/4 to 3/4 full. Tighten the cap and disconnect the battery to clear the code. If you let me know what model vehicle and can give you some more hints to what else it might be.

What would cause white smoke to come out of the tailpipe?

If you are having a lot of white smoke all the time the car runs then check for coolant mixing in with the oil, look for water in the oil when you check the oil or milky brown oil. This produces a white "steam" that is very thick to come out of the exhaust. If your engine temp. gauge is very high and over heats you probably have a blown head gasket. If it has a bluish tint look it may be burning oil. Indications might be how much oil is currently in the car i.e too much oil, or if there is a leak in the line you may be adding a bunch of oil over a short time. If it is only when you first start the car and the engine is cold, then it may be that your valve seals are bad and need replacing. Hope this might help or at least give you some ideas...

AnswerIt's coolant. headgasket, cracked or warped head, intake manifold or gasket, or cracked block are your sources. Take it to a care car service to have it checked AnswerAre you sure the smoke is white or is it a light blueish color start the car and have someone stand in a position to see the tail pipe and see if much water comes out with the smoke if it does and you have been running low on antifreeze i would say a head gasket if no water and not low on anti freeze look at worn valves or valve seals or worn rings good bet on these two items good luck AnswerBurning oil in the fuel would cause black smoke so it definitely has nothing to do with that. White smoke can be caused by water in the combustion camber or unburned fuel. If you've be having bad gas mileage you probably have a problem with your fuel or ignition system or timing. You can usually smell the fuel in your exaust when this happens. If you smell no fuel and you've had no change in fuel economy check for water like one of the previous posts said. AnswerTry the changing PCV, it work for me when white smoke(rock concert-like) would come out of the exhaust every time the car was turned on. That was the only time the white smoke would come out in my case. If it is a constant white smoke emitted from the exhaust, especially while driving, it could be something else. AnswerOne thing that I noticed, is that when valve seals get some years on them, a little bit of white smoke can emitted from the tail pipe when you first start it up or when you set at a stop light idling. But usually not that much smoke. Old valves could be causing you to run rich. AnswerSomehow water has or is being burned, check coolant level and temp if you have temp light put a guage in if coolant low there is your problem if not check egr valve and pcv valve also check oil level if high and milky there is high possibility that you have blown head gasket and or block may be cracked allowing oil to get into the oil pan. Answeri think it would be a blown head gasket or blown head

What causes the check engine light to come on for a while and then go off?

Intermittant problem. The " check engine light" is by far one of the most misunderstood technological advances by the public. This is an needed in-depth understanding for the public. It is a warning light that is illuminated when there is a problem affecting the EMISSION SYSTEM only. Emission system being the pollution control system. Don't get a hard on against it as it is a good thing once you understand it. One point that was brought up a a recent meeting of technicians was that the amount of hydrocarbons is greater when the gas cap is left off than when the engine is running. Hydrocarbons are part of pollution emitted as gasoline evaporates. Going a step farther, one facet of the emission system is the "Evaporative" portion. This is when the fumes from the gasoline are leaking from the system into the outside air. This is one part of the emission system that can trigger a check engine light. I would say that about 7% of the vehicles that have a check engine light are the result of a loose or inadequate gas cap. But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have 17 different computers) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they can be vastly different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests are not run until preceding ones have run successfully. So if there is a problem in one particular area that is preventing another self test from running, you can have a situation where one problem is fixed, but another still exists. If you fix a problem and drive the car through a drive cycle that sets the monitor (or self test) the light will go off as it passes that criteria that triggered it in the first place. After 1996, the auto industry went to a idea called OBD II (on board diagnostics). This was to get all the manufacturers onto a similar plane for troubleshooting and powertrain control. While they still differ vastly, many corrections and adaptations were made for technicians to better fix the check engine light problems. Prior to this there were so many different and poor troubleshooting data from a check engine light problem that resolving the problem was much more difficult. Many early warning light of this nature were set to illuminate based on mileage. An Oxygen sensor was one of the things that were meant to be replaced when that mileage was hit. This is much like many current "Change oil lights

What causes the check engine light to come on 1999 Chevy Prizm?

It is caused when the onboard computer detects a fault. Use a computer diagnostic scanner to find out which specific fault has been detected. Often the description of the codes is a bit obscure and it can take a little head-scratching and investigating to figure out what the cryptic message may mean. just go to autozone or any parts place and most of the time they have a scan tool and will let you use it to find out whats wrong. quick and ez and you are allredy at the store. the check engine light can come on for many different reasons. some reasons are minor (filled with gas while engine running) others can be bad (engine trouble). the best thing to do, if your car runs okay, disconnect the red battery terminal and reconnect. the check engine light should be off

What exhaust is better for a 94 V6 Camaro?

From what I've seen most people are running Pacesetter headers, with either Magnaflow or Borla exhaust/mufflers. Some also use Flowmaster exhaust/ mufflers but from what I've heard the Flowmaster doesn't sound too hot on a v6 Camaro as far as the "Flowmaster" sound.

If someone asks hows business a Muffler salesman says?

Muffler Salesman says : Exhausting

Fireworks Salesman says: Really Booming

But....im still stuck on the lumber sorry that's all i got

Why do I have thick white smoke coming out of exhaust as I drive?

Generally speaking, white smoke is a sign of a blown head gasket, cracked cylinder head or any defect allowing water to enter combustion chamber. Remove spark plugs and look for one that is noticeably cleaner than the rest. That's the problem cylinder or if 2 adjacent plugs are like that it is a crack in the head gasket between those 2 cylinders.

What should the labor cost be to replace the accumulator and muffler and 3 8 biflow dryer?

One tech for one day (8hrs) at the contractors going hourly rate. Plus the cost of materials. I don`t understand what could have failed on the accumulator, since it is basically just a tank. Unless it leaks, if so it may pay for you to discuss an entire new outdoor unit.

Why would a 78 Mercedes 280CE run fine when the AC's off but sounds like its putting pressure on the engine when it is on?

Hey Cort==The a/c compressor draws about 10 horsepower. At idle your engine is developing about 30 hp so you are taking about 1/3 of it for the compressor. You may have switch problems on the compressor causing it not to work in some positions. GoodluckJoe

Could gasket sealer make your car smoke white from the exhaust?

Possible but doubtful. White smoke from the exhaust is normally a sign that coolant is entering the combustion chamber. This will destroy an engine in short order if not repaired. My guess is someone did not install the head gasket correctly or over or under torqued the head bolts and may have cracked the head.

Montero sport burning smell?

Possibly a leaky valve cover gasket allowing oil to seep out and down on to exhaust manifold.
