dude i would always get the manifold shield off first then run the car to heat the manifold off cus it will expand the metal to make the sensor easier to remove.....

If you mean the head of the bolt is stripped, there is a tool called a back out. You employ it by drilling the right size hole in the top of the bolt, inserting the backout. The backout, when turned, will grip the bolt inside the hole sufficiently to turn it. Also drilling a hole through the bold will take the pressue off the threads of the bolt and with a paid of vice grips you may be able to turn it. I'd try the backout, it's nearly fool proof.

On the supercharged model (SSEi) there are 2 map sensors mounted on a bracket above the rear valve cover, connected to the vacuum hosing. Each sensor is held on the bracket with 2 screws. One sensor runs the supercharger boost gauge, the other is used for engine management. The electrical connectors are identical, and it doesn't matter which sensor they are attached to, other than the fact you don't want to attach them in such a way as to tension the wires and cause damage to the wiring harness or connectors. There is a lot of emissions wiring and hoses that can interfere with getting to the sensors, along with spark wires, etc, so they are not easy to see in poor lighting. They connect to the vacuum hoses underneath, so carefully remove them, as on a car this old, the rubber connector and stiff vacuum piping can be brittle from engine compartment heat, and tear or break very easily. Any vacuum leaks can cause high engine idle speeds along with other driveability problems.

To fix it, your going to need a 10mm wrench (or socket with a short 3" extension, experiment at
home to find the exact tool you think you will need if stranded on the side of the road,
at night, in the cold and rain). A flathead screwdriver, and a replacement CPS. Ideally, you should use a 6-point tool, as the CPS bolt is known for rounding off. Locate the CPS. It is on the passenger side of the engine block. Accessible from under
the truck, and located about the 10 o'clock position behind the crankshaft front pulley.
Reach up and unplug the wiring harness, remove the 10mm bolt, and GENTLY pry the bad CPS
out with the flat screwdriver. See picture for location detail.
A select few of you may find an ALTERNATOR while looking under your truck for your CPS.

This isn't true as it's not possible to see / reach behind the engine on a 1997 Caravan from the hood. It's possible the visualize the sensor from the top, but not easily, and you certainly cannot 'access' it without removing a number of parts. The upstream O2 sensor must be reached from underneath the vehicle by following the exhaust up. It's not the easily-seen one just dangling down under the car. Follow the pipe on which that one is located, up about 2 feet, and the sensor will be up there, mounted on top of the exhaust manifold where it's difficult to visualize. The wire is less than a foot long and you can also see the plastic clip from this angle.
Check the MAF. it sounds like the computer thinks there is more air flowing through the intake than what really is and is adding fuel to the mix to compensate.

In general, bank one is on the same side as the #1 cylinder. If the engine has more than one head, bank #2 will be on the opposite side, but if the engine only has one head there won't BE a bank #2.
Sensor 1 is the forward sensor,. It's typically screwed into the exhaust manifold right where all of the exhaust lines connect into the common line. It's about the only thing that screws into the exhaust and if you look just in front of the head-pipe you should be able to find the Oxygen sensor.
Sensor 2 is typically AFTER the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 seldom fails but of course, there are exceptions.
BTW, if bank 1 sensor 1 has failed, you can bet that bank 2 is right behind. It's kind of like sparkplugs, replace them both while you're at it.

It can. But it could also be a number of other things. My car recently had this problem, but it turned out to be a firing problem and not the converter. so i'd say have all the cheeper stuff checked first.
