Where can you purchase an odometer bulb for a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire?

YOU CANT BUY A BULB CALL YOU PONTIAC DEALER AND HE WILL EXPLAIN WHAT HAS TO BE DONE

The entire cluster has to be replaced. This has happened to me 2 times now. The part is about $300 and the dealer HAS to install it. It takes about 3 hours to be done. This is something that you have to do if you ever want to sell the car, since you have to have the mileage.

I have had the bulb on the odometer out for two years now. you can still read the mileage by pointing a flashlight to the odometer, from the side.

The Cluster DOES NOT have to be replaced, i fixed mine for less then $1. And if your dealer charged you 3 hours labour they ripped you off, it takes about 30 minutes to replace the cluster. Remove your top dash pad (remove airbag fuse first), remove your cluster, take off the back cover (6 screws) and then locate the odometer bulb, turn and remove it, then solder a small 12v bulb from your local auto parts store in its place, very simple and a hell of alot cheaper

All I did was remove the screws for the dash removed the dash then removed the cluster and the 6 screws. I then went to my local scrap yard did the same thing to a scraped sunfire there. They did not charge me for the bulb since I removed it my self. Only a Sucker would bring it to a dealership. I'm a girl and I had no problem took me less than an hour!

Question for Last answer:

WHAT IS THE PART NUMBER TO THE BULB?

Where is the transmission plug located on a Pontiac Sunbird?

Most of the Gm automatics have no plug. This forces you to remove the pan in order to access fluid for a change, this in turn gives you access to the filter itself.

Can the water pump make the tensioner belt fall off?

If the water pump locks up, the impeller shaft is bent, or the water pump pulley is loose yes.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1991 Pontiac Sunbird 4 cylinder?

Hey Le==Some of these cars have to have the engine supports removed to get to the water pump. I suggest getting a manual on your car from a parts store. It will have pictures and everything. GoodluckJoe

i recently did this repair for a friend. It was excruciating. it was all day.

There are two pulleys running in this engine, and the water pump runs on the second pully behind a case. so you have to take almost everything off to get at it. Then, the water pump is actually the belt tensioner for that pulley system. it is excentric (sp?) so when you turn it in place, it tightens the belt. then you secure it back with three bolts. The belt system in question connects the drive shaft with the cam shaft, So you do have to be Very Careful with the belt/ pulley alignment.i marked the pulleys very very carefully so i could get everything lined up again.

This was a challenging repair. The one thing i did was had my GM Dealer parts person print the screen showing the breakdown of all the parts in that location so i had a reference point. Good luck

Why do the wipers not return to starting position when they are turned off?

The parking pawl probably has a broken spring and is not working correctly. The pawl is a 1.25" long piece of metal external to the motor and is part of the Stack-O-Plates on the output shaft of the motor and to which the wiper push rods are attached. When you turn the wipers to "Off" the motor will reverse direction and the pawl will catch on a stationary tab that is part of the motor/wiper frame. This will hold the wipers in the down position while the motor continues to run and allow the parking Stack-O-Plates-Spring-Wrapped gizmo to do its magic which drags the wiper arms down into the extra low "parked" position. If the tiny spring that holds the pawl in the out position breaks then the pawl will not engage the stationary tab. The wipers will then continue swinging upward through half a swing at which point a cam/switch that is internal to the pulse board (the cover on the motor output gear (three T20 Torx screws to remove) will tell the motor to stop because it thinks the parking Stack-O-Plates gizmo has finished doing its job but instead the wiper arms will be stuck in the "Hello, I'm a dork" raised flag position.

WARNING: Use caution while working around the wiper mechanism. If the key is on and the wiper lever is set to "Intermediate" then the motor can start unexpectedly. If your fingers are down there in the wrong place, the mechanism has more than enough power to break bones and/or peal the skin right off of them. Don't be afraid, just be deliberate and methodical and always be aware if the motor/electronics are energized.

It is very easy to remove the motor/wiper assembly so do not hesitate to do so:

Remove the plastic covers off the wiper arm retaining nuts.

Remove the wiper arm nuts with a 13mm socket.

Twist and pull with your finger tips and finger nails at the base of the small rubber squirt tubing off the hard plastic squirt delivery tubes.

You may have to yard up and down on the wiper arms pretty hard to get them loose from their tapered shafts. Don't be a mindless gorilla but be brave and keep at it. They will come loose.

Remove the cowl cover by pulling or prying out the center of the six retaining push pins. Then lift the cowl cover up then out at a 45 degree angle. You will find the cover is a very tight fit between the right hand wiper shaft and the weatherstrip at the base of the windshield. Be brave and keep pulling and prying until it comes loose.

Reinstalling the cowl cover and getting the rubber weather strip over the cover is the hardest part of the whole job. Use putty knifes (slowly and carefully!) or a very small slender screwdriver. It took me half an hour just to do this part of the job that. ugh.

Remove the 3 bolts holding the wiper assembly.

Disconnect the electrical connector by squeezing the retaining tab that you cant see on the backside of the connector. You have to squeeze real hard.

Lift the wiper assembly out.

Remove the Stack-O-Plates assembly from the motor output shaft (T30 Torx) to access the pawl to put on a spring. I wrapped one and a half loops of spring around one protrusion on the end of the pawl and around one tab of the stationary clip that limits the swing of the pawl to hold it in the "swung out" position. The loop of spring applies very light pressure but that is all it needs. This will all make sense when you are looking at the pawl mechanism. I cut off one and a half loops from a spring like what you would find in a retractable ball point pen but bigger. Use what spring you can find even if it from a ball point pen. When the motor runs in the forward direction the pawl harmlessly swings out of the way as it passes by the stationary tab. Bend the stationary tab in or out as necessary so the pawl engages straight on to it. I will try and post pictures of all this.

Before remounting the whole Stack-O-Plates gizmo assembly you will need to set the motor into the correctly timed position. Plug the motor in, then turn the wipers to "Intermediate". When the motor stops then turn off the ignition switch or quickly disconnect the motor. The motor is now in the correct position. Remount the Stack-O-Plates so there is about 1/4" to 1" space between the pawl and the stationary tab. Tighten down the T30 Torx bolt (blue lock tight recommended) then test the unit to see if the pawl engages to the stationary tab and lets the parking Stack-O-Plates do all its parking gyrations before you remount the whole wiper assembly. When you are all done try not to wear out the wipers by constantly turning them on and off for the next few hours of driving just so you can marvel at your handy work. :O)

Buy the way, if you turn the wipers off and they just wiggle a little bit while the motor goes click-click-click-click trying to do its parking thing then you need to alter (slightly) the relationship between the cam/switch arm inside the pulse module (again, the cover on the motor output gear, three T20 Torx screws to remove). There are two switch/contact arms in the center of the pulse board. The one closest to the board that engages the plastic cam mounted to the board is the one you want to change slightly. The other free floating arm is driven by the cam on the big motor output gear and is the contact to let the electronics know the output gear has rotated half a turn and the wipers are now parked. I bent the one arm closest to the pulse board away from its cam just slightly so that only about 3/4 of the "hook" on the end of the arm (you will know what I mean when you look at it) is hitting the ramp on the cam (the cam spins clockwise). Verify that the electrical contact actually opens a bit when the arm is riding on the high part of the cam. You may have to adjust and verify a number of times to find that sweet spot where it runs reliably. It took me half an hour of fiddling. O_0

What is torque sequence for heads on 1993 Pontiac sunbird?

A 1993 Pontiac Sunbird head bolt torque sequence recommends starting at one and of the head and alternating to the other end of the head. You should end up in the middle.

What should each head bolt be torqued at?

Torque specs are very specific, based on whether or not the bolts are reusable, and if they are going through or into aluminum. you need to get the correct number and pattern for your motor from a repair manual or autozone.com.

What is a transaxle?

First, a brief presentation. A motor (or engine, if you prefer) drives a transmission (different "gears" or drive ratios) which drives some kind of differential to drive the axles (which drive the wheels) of a vehicle. The transaxle combines the functions of the transmission and differential to deliver the engine power to spin the axles. There are a lot of different transaxles, as you can imagine. The VW's from back in the day used them. So did (and do!) a lot of race cars. Use the link for pictures. There are a bunch of them. Not all are automotive, which is good because the transaxle isn't just limited to vehicles, though most of our encounters with transaxles are in cars.

Car stalls when accelerating?

when kick down the gas pedal to accelerate, the car downshift but then stalls and then engine stays rough until i turn off the engine and restart it then the engine runs normal again till the next kick down.

Can you adjust the idle on a 1989 Pontiac Sunbird?

Idle speed cannot be adjusted on this model. No manual adjustments available. Problem may lie in fuel pump, or fuel filter or temp sensor.

How do you replace the ecm on 1991 Pontiac sunbird?

The ECM is located behind the glove box. Remove the glove box door. You'll see the ECM. Disconnect the battery. Remove the three plugs on the bottom of the ECM. There are 4 nuts that hold the ECM in. They are 10mm. Remove them and pull out the ECM. Install is just the reversal. Remember to take your PROM from the old ECM and put it in the new one. New ones don't come with the PROM and it's highly probable that a used one will have the wrong PROM installed as each one is programmed to each specific car.

Why would a 1992 Sunbird GT die when applying brakes and also revs up and down in a cycle?

Hey Pete==Have the brake booster checked out. The diaphragm may have a leak. GoodlukcJoe

just took it out for a test drive and it only happens when car is at operating temp not when cold any ideas?

try flushing out the fuel system. stuff builds up in there and it doesn't run as clean and as well as it should. also anylost power the car had wil be restored and your gas milage should improve. i have a 92 and it did the same thing

HeadlineIt's either a vacuum leak (check all hoses) or it's probably the Idle Air Control Motor (or IAR it's sometimes called) needing cleaning. These cars and other J-body cars too, are known for this problem, in fact not just GM cars either. My 92 3.1 V6 Sunbird does the same thing about every 5000-6000km, maybe even less. It's a little motor (usually black) with a 3 wire connector on it right near the Air Filter hose and throttle body and it has 3 vacuum lines in a row coming out the other side of the plenum it's attached to. A Haynes or Chilton manual will not show you the location of this motor and when you look it up and it usually says to take it to a mechanic because it needs to be hooked up to a computer. It doesn't in most cases (just disconnect the battery and reconnect when job is finished to reset the computer so it can "re-learn".) Use degreaser or Isopropyl alcohol or lighter fluid (something powerful that evaporates) there is a special spray too that my mechanic uses, anyway, submerge the motor, and don't worry about submersion it's a sealed motor anyway, shake out the excess (you'll see how dirty the excess fluid is.) wipe off and let cleaner evaporate/dry (unscrew the pintle and spring before cleaning so the cleaner gets right down in there, clean the spring and pintel too while your at it). Then reattach it to it's plenum (make sure to put the rubber O-ring back onto the neck of the motor)! If that doesn't work, take off the plenum the motor came off of, clean it and put back in with a new paper gasket (the original one is plastic and tends to get brittle from heat, mine broke apart in my hands after removal). Line the whole gasket with a thin layer of high-temp silicone for a good air-proof seal. If the motor is faulty (you can test it by unscrewing the motor out of it's plenum and turning the key, then turning on the air conditioning. A/C causes the pintel to move in and out, although I guess anything requiring more air like revving the engine would work too. if it's faulty, get a new one, they are usually only about $20. Don't worry if it does this "erratic idling" a little again at first after cleaning, the computer is just re-learning and adjusting accordingly. You will notice (on the RPM needle) that when the idle goes wacko again, the computer and motor together will "flick" the RPMs back down to where they are supposed to be (I use the word flick because the needle will literally snap back to about 600-800 rpm when the engine starts to rev. to high or too low). This is how you know it's fixed. After the computer learns for a few drives and finds a happy medium, your idling at a stop light or when applying the brakes should be perfect. The only difference between this method and a mechanic is there is almost no computer re-learning (they adjust it to the happy medium by computer instead of letting the computer retrain itself.) The main thing is the little motor is clean and that's the most important part. (Well, for a little while anyway, till it gets dirty again!) Isn't this what air-filters are supposed to filter out? :)

Where is oil filter on your 2004 Pontiac sunbird?

Trick question there is no 2004 Pontiac sunbird. 1994 sunbirds which is the last year have the oil filter by the right side wheel well, this is similar for the "Sunfire" of later years.

If a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird signals do not work can you hook them up to a toggle switch and which wires would you use?

look under the dash and remove the round brass or silver flasher it will say flasher on it and your turn signals should work with out you rewiring them.

What is the unit of torque?

the unit of torque is NM.

Torque has dimensions of force times distance. Official SI literature suggests using the unit newton metre (N·m) or the unit joule per radian.[8] The unit newton metre is properly denoted N·m or N m.

Torque, moment or moment of force is the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis.

The magnitude of torque depends on three quantities: the force applied, the length of the lever arm[2] connecting the axis to the point of force application, and the angle between the force vector and the lever arm. In symbols:

whereτ is the torque vector and τ is the magnitude of the torque,r is the displacement vector (a vector from the point from which torque is measured to the point where force is applied), and r is the length (or magnitude) of the lever arm vector,F is the force vector, and F is the magnitude of the force,× denotes the cross product,θ is the angle between the force vector and the lever arm vector.

How do i change the oil on a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird 2.0 4-cylinder?

Pull the plug in the oil pan to drain the used oil. I drain mine in a Rubbermaid dish tub I use in my garage. Once drained take off the oil filter and replace with a new one. Hand tight plus a quarter turn. Put drain plug back in and add new oil. Amount will be in owners manual probably about 4 liters. Let run for a min wait another min and check to make sure the oil level is good.

How do you remove the serpentine belt tensioner on a 91 Pontiac sunbird 2.0?

On some cars it is a big job. Get a manual on your car from DISCOUNTAUTOREPAIRMANUALS/COM

How do you change the ignition in a 1991 Pontiac Sunbird?

okay,,,,you have to take off the rubber horn plate to expose the nut on the wheel, under the nut is a little set waher , kinda looks like a horse shoe. in order to remove this you have to go to Canadian Tire or a car parts outlet and get the steering wheel remover kit. Cost about 20.00 . then you can remove the lock pin. now you have to remove your turn signal , in order to get at the screw for the ignition. simply take out the ignition and replace the new one , put it all abck together in reverse order.
