How does one remove sludge almost the consistency of mud in the radiator of a 2000 Ford Taurus?
I don't know for sure, but can't you just get a radiator flush kit to get out the sludge? It's worth asking the guy at the parts house about.
In such extreme cases of cooling system sludge build up, I would take it to a shop for a professional flushing and cleansing.
I would suggest a car radiator specialist type shop - they'll know how to NOT cause more damage to the system.

The radiator drain is located under the radiator (you may have to raise your vehicle to spot it beyond the shield). (1)Remove radiator cap and attach a 3/8" diameter hose to the drain fitting to direct the coolant into a container and then open the drain fitting with a pair of pliers. (2)Flush radiator with fresh water from a garden hose until water runs clear through the plug. (3)Refill with 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze. Piece of cake, huh!! The hardest part is locating the drain fitting which appears to be well hidden, but I think it is on the driver's side of the radiator. Good luck. A transmission can not run without a cooler, for one. Either the water was already in there, or it got in from a leak in the radiator/cooler tank, or from an external source, like rain or splash getting in the filler tube.
Why is it not safe to open the radiator cap when engine is overheating?
When the cooling system is overheated, the coolant is at pressure. Removing the radiator cap will release the pressure, and allow the coolant to boil, probably splashing you with boiling-hot radiator fluid. Your arms and hands will certainly be burned, and there's a good chance that the boiling coolant will splash your face.
You wouldn't like it if that happens.
Also, the water pump could easily cause an engine to start running hot. Water pumps don't necessarily go completely bad all at once. It could be just starting to go bad, the worse it gets, the hotter the engine will run. Also, if the radiator did indeed need flushing, then understand that the inside condition of the radiator and the water pump will naturaly be the same. So the chances of the water pump going bad would be pretty good. One other possibility could be a crack in a head. If the overheating happens in low city driving only and at highway speeds the egine runs ok, look into the hydraulic radiator( 2000-2002 only) fan. It is possible that the fan is not running at all. Run the engine with the hood open. When the temp gage starts climbing, look at the fan blade to see if it running.

CAUTION: Care must be taken to ensure the accessory drive belt does not become
contaminated with engine coolant.
7. Add as much coolant as possible to the engine fill. The heater air bleed will remain open.
8. Replace the engine fill cap.
On all engines
9. NOTE: The heater air bleed remains open.
Start the engine and turn the heater to MAX position.
10. Close the heater air bleed when a steady stream of coolant comes from it, during engine idle.
11. Allow the engine to idle for five minutes, add coolant to the degas bottle as needed to maintain the
cold fill MAX mark.
12. Reopen the heater air bleed to release any entrapped air and close again.
On 3.9L engines
13. Maintain engine speed of 2,000 rpm for 3-5 minutes or until hot air comes from the heater.
14. Return to idle and verify hot air is still coming from the heater.
On 3.0L engines
15. Maintain engine speed of 1,500 rpm for 3-5 minutes or until hot air comes from the heater.
16. Return to idle and verify hot air is still coming from the heater.
On all engines
17. Set the heater temperature setting to 24°C (75°F ) and allow the vehicle to idle for two minutes.
18. Shut the engine off and allow to cool.
19. After the engine has cooled, add coolant to the degas bottle to bring the level to the cold fill MAX
mark.

You have either a blown head gasket or a cracked head. Serious engine dame will occur if this is not repaired. Do not drive the vehicle in until it is repaired. Probably head gasket, intake gasket, cracked head, cracked block, If there is no compression getting into the radiator, you may be able to put one of several stop leak products in the cooling system that may fix it. All of these types have a clear liquid with a copper colored part in the bottom of the bottle. May fix it, may not, but it's only about $8. I have had good luck on head gaskets leaking into the exaust.

You will smell antifreeze and or notice you have to put in alot of fluids. You will see leakage under the pump or around inside of engine compartment. Buy a new one that has a lifetime guarantee and you will rest easier.

I would say the most inexpensive way to repair this is to get a good used radiator at a salvage yard near you. If you're handy with wrenches you should be able to save yourself some BUCKS $$ going this route.

I would buy a new one if I were you. Salvage yard ones have been sitting around with no coolant, rotting. You want to take the chance of destroying your motor? A used one will go bad soon too. Might as well start fresh.

Stop-Leak is the cheapest way to fix a small leak, but it is only a temporary measure. If coolant is really gushing out of the radiator, it's best to replace it or have a radiator shop repair it. Trying to cut corners here is like jumping over dollar bills to pick up pennies. BUY A BRAND-NEW VIRGIN, FRESH-FROM-THE-FACTORY RADIATOR!! Most come with a warranty. It is risking severe overheating and possibly blowing a head gasket or destroying your motor. $100.00 for a new radiator is much cheaper than $1000.00 or more to replace a head gasket or a motor.

You might be able to fish it out using a section of coat hanger wire or one of those magnets with a flexible handle. Failing this, leave it in the block, as it falls to the bottom of the water jacket where it will pose minimal flow or cooling loss.
Please Note: Most freeze plugs are lead coated brass and are non-magnetic & the freeze plug can block waterflow in the cylinder jacket (water flow will move it around more-so when driving) so I would not suggest leaving it in the block.
