But if the car was repossessed from you due to criminal activity involving the rental car, that's something you need to talk to the police about. The police would have seized the car initially and impounded it. Anything in the car would have been considered evidence and searched.

Once the police are done with the car, it is given back to the owner (the rental agency) with whatever was left inside it.

I have never personally heard of anyone attempting to reclaim possessions from a car in such a situation. Usually when we get such a car back (we call it a "conversion"), there's nothing left but junk and trash.

Well depending on what state your in it varys. They have to send a letter to you stating you have defaulted on your loan and are going to be repossessing your auto. Depending on who you financed it thru you may have signed that away. at some car lots they can repo your car even if your only one day late because you signed that agreement. Always read any contract you sign with a fine tooth comb.

whatever you do, don't let it get reposessed or voluntarily give it up. Your credit will be ruined for 7 years and you will still have to pay the difference between what they sell the car for vs. what you owe on the loan. If you don't owe that much more than it's worth try trading it in on a cheaper car and roll the difference onto your new loan. You'll be paying for it longer but your payments will probably be a lot less. Or sell it yourself (you'll get a lot more) and pay the difference to the finance company out of your pocket. If you owe a lot more than it's worth you're just going to have to suck it up and make the payments. If you don't you will regret it.

They are accepting responsibility after purchase. For your peace of mind, sure why not get it checked. It's usually free at your local Highway Patrol Office.
